Spectral analysis techniques were used to characterize the cyclical variation in rumination behavior of cows. Four Holstein cows were fed twice daily a diet of 60% high-moisture shelled corn-based concentrate, 15% first-cut alfalfa-grass hay and 25% second-cut alfalfa silage. The number of minutes that each cow spent ruminating was determined for 15-min intervals during six consecutive days. Chronic ruminant gagging was substantially reduced in a severely retarded 13-year-old girl with Batten's disease through the use of contingent citrus juice in an ABAB design. Previous literature suggests that citrus juice may not be effective for treatment of rumination in older and/or handicapped children due to habituation. In this study, habituation may have been prevented by alternating lime juice and lemon juice when ruminative gagging reached a predetermined rate. The effects of intravenous administration of vasopressor drugs on parasite concentration was studied in cows and sheep infected with Trypanosoma congolense. Ephedrine (USP), adrenaline (BP) and insulin increased jugular concentration of the parasite. Maximum effects were reached between 1 1/2 and 2 h with ephedrine and at 2 1/2-3 h with adrenaline. A summary of the herd and flock population dynamics is given followed by a discussion of the importance of goat and sheep production in southern Nigeria and suggestions for methods of improvement.
