Determination of Normative Values for the Early Onset Scoliosis Self-Reported Questionnaire (EOSQ-SELF).

BACKGROUND: The early-onset scoliosis (EOS) self-questionnaire (EOSQ-SELF) is a recently validated patient-reported outcome (PRO) instrument created to allow patients with EOS to report their perspectives on their own health (Appendix 1, Supplemental Digital Content 1, http://links.lww.com/BPO/A936). The goal of this study is to establish age-matched normative values for the EOSQ-SELF. METHODS: Patients aged 8 to 18 presenting to an orthopaedic surgery clinic without spinal deformities were enrolled prospectively over 2 years. Those with prior orthopaedic treatment unrelated to scoliosis and

A Longitudinal Examination of Depression Among Gambling Inpatients.

Problem and pathological gamblers demonstrate high levels of depression, which may be related to coping styles, reactive emotional states, and/or genetics (Potenza et al., Arch Gen Psychiat 62(9):1015-1021, 2005; Getty et al., J Gambl Stud 16(4):377-391, 2000). Although depression impacts treatment outcomes (Morefield et al., Int J Men Healt Addict 12(3):367-379, 2013), research regarding depression among gamblers in residential treatment is particularly limited. This study attempts to address this deficit by examining the course of depressive symptoms among clients at a residential gambling p

Exploring cross-cultural effectiveness of internet-based depression treatment (IBAT-D) with peer-to-peer support vs. without across WEIRD and non-WEIRD samples: a research protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Internet-based self-help interventions (IBIs) have proven effective in reducing depression, especially in high and middle-income countries, and have proven to be flexible and location-independent. However, unguided IBIs often face high dropout rates, low uptake, lower adherence, and reduced effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the effectiveness of a self-help program against depressive symptoms (Deprexis) with or without peer-to-peer support, focusing on cultural differences between WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) and non-WEIRD countries,

An anxious time? Exploring the nature of worries experienced by young people with a mild to moderate intellectual disability as they make the transition to adulthood.

OBJECTIVES. Transition to adulthood can be a challenging time for all young people. However, this period of change is likely to be more difficult for those with mild intellectual disabilities (IDs) because they are often more socially marginalized, remain more dependent upon their family, and have fewer options for future careers than their typically developing peers. Therefore, this study examines the content and salience of worries experienced by young people with mild ID during transition to adulthood, and whether the above disadvantages are associated with the level of reported anxiety and

Immune checkpoint failures in inflammatory myopathies: An overview.

Dermatomyositis (DM), polymyositis (PM), inclusion body myositis (IBM), immune mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) and overlap myositis (OM) are classified as inflammatory myopathies (IM) with involvement of autoimmune features such as autoreactive lymphocytes and autoantibodies. Autoimmunity can be defined as a loss in self-tolerance and attack of autoantigens by the immune system. Self-tolerance is achieved by a group of immune mechanisms occurring in central and periphal lymphoid organs and tissues, called immune checkpoints, that work in synergy to protect the body from harmful immune rea

'I was broken in so many different ways': The intersection of complex factors impacting homeless and at-risk African American women's mental health and well-being.

African American women are at higher risk of poor mental ill health compared with other racial and ethnic groups in the United States. For low-income and homeless African American populations, the risk of poor mental ill health is even higher. The purpose of our study was to learn what programmes at a long-term transitional living centre helped at-risk and homeless African American mothers to succeed on their own, in accordance with self-identified goals. We conducted ten focus group interviews with 39 graduates of a long-term transitional living centre located in a Midwestern city, and an ind

Perfectionism, self-compassion, intuitive eating and health-related quality of life in kidney transplant recipients.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects ~850 million people globally, imposing significant health burdens. This study was the first to examine how perfectionism, via self-compassion, stress and coping, predicts health outcomes such as health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and intuitive eating for kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). Structural equation modelling was used to examine these relationships in KTRs (n = 354, x̄ age = 53.10 years, SD = 12.46 years, 74.6% female) and a non-CKD comparison group (n = 400, x̄ age = 39.39 years, SD = 12.91 years, 84.3% female). Results showed that 'maladapt

Impact of Botfly Parasitism on the Behavior of Mantled Howler Monkeys.

Parasitism, a widespread nutrient acquisition strategy among animals, results from a long evolutionary history where one species derives its metabolic needs from another. Parasites can significantly reduce host fitness, affecting reproduction, growth, and survivability. Vertebrate hosts exhibit defensive strategies against parasites, including "sickness behaviors" such as lethargy and self-grooming to remove ectoparasites. In addition, social animals may engage in "helping sick animals" behaviors, such as social grooming, to aid parasitized group members. Mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palli

Adapting Cognitive Remediation Group Therapy Online: Focus Groups with People Aging with HIV.

Cognitive health is a significant concern for people aging with HIV/AIDS. Psychosocial group therapies may help people aging with HIV who experience cognitive challenges cope with their symptoms. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed in-person group therapies need adaptation for technology-mediated delivery. Peer-led focus groups discussed adapting cognitive remediation group therapy (CRGT) as an online intervention. CRGT combines mindfulness-based stress reduction and brain training activities. Purposive sampling recruited people aging with HIV (40+) who self-identified cognitive concerns and reside
