Migration-related health inequalities: showing the complex interactions between gender, social class and place of origin.

In this paper, we briefly review theories and findings on migration and health from the health equity perspective, and then analyse migration-related health inequalities taking into account gender, social class and migration characteristics in the adult population aged 25-64 living in Catalonia, Spain. On the basis of the characterisation of migration types derived from the review, we distinguished between immigrants from other regions of Spain and those from other countries, and within each group, those from richer or poorer areas; foreign immigrants from low-income countries were also distin

Health and social care staff's experiences working with adults with complex needs - a focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity is increasing globally, affecting over one-third of the population. Adults with complex needs often experience physical, mental, and cognitive disorders, leading to increased healthcare utilization, reduced quality of life, and social challenges. The frequent co-occurrence of psychiatric conditions, substance abuse, addiction, and homelessness highlights the complexity of these needs. Collaboration between healthcare and social services is essential for delivering integrated care but is often hindered by legislative constraints and difficulties in coordinating care.

Depression and social phobia secondary to alcohol dependence.

BACKGROUND: According to the self-medication hypothesis, individuals with depression and anxiety disorders use alcohol to control their symptoms and subsequently become dependent. Conversely, alcohol dependence disorder (ADD) can cause or exacerbate psychiatric disorders. This study analyzed the characteristics of depression and social phobia secondary to ADD. (1) What is their functional impact? (2) Are they independent or associated conditions? (3) Do they completely remit in abstinent individuals? (4) Is the remission of one disorder associated with the remission of the other disorder? MET

Social fear extinction susceptibility is associated with Microbiota-Gut-Brain axis alterations.

Social anxiety disorder is a common psychiatric condition that severely affects quality of life of individuals and is a significant societal burden. Although many risk factors for social anxiety exist, it is currently unknown how social fear sensitivity manifests biologically. Furthermore, since some individuals are resilient and others are susceptible to social fear, it is important to interrogate the mechanisms underpinning individual response to social fear situations. The microbiota-gut-brain axis has been associated with social behaviour, has recently been linked with social anxiety disor

Social sensitivity and acne: the role of personality in negative social consequences and quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Acne affects a majority of adolescents and a substantial number of adults. The adverse social impact of acne is well documented. Negative social consequences, however, are likely to be determined by personality features as well as acne severity. PURPOSE: To determine whether a personality trait--dispositional social sensitivity--is associated with the adverse social impact of acne. METHODS: A survey of 479 acne sufferers between the ages of 16 and 62 was conducted in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, United States. Respondents were classified as either high or low social sen

Selective attention to angry faces in clinical social phobia.

This study investigated the time course of attentional responses to emotional facial expressions in a clinical sample with social phobia. With a visual probe task, photographs of angry, happy, and neutral faces were presented at 2 exposure durations: 500 and 1250 ms. At 500 ms, the social phobia group showed enhanced vigilance for angry faces, relative to happy and neutral faces, in comparison with normal controls. In the 1250-ms condition, there were no significant attentional biases in the social phobia group. Results are consistent with a bias in initial orienting to threat cues in social a

Audience Responses to Online Public Shaming in Online Environments: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Incidents of online public shaming can have devastating consequences for those who are shamed, but how those who witness shaming behaviors react is unclear. When considering online public shaming, it is crucial to be aware of the context in which it occurs. Implicit norms that govern these contexts and evoke emotions can influence what is deemed as acceptable behavior when witnessing public shaming. However, previous work has not examined the role that perceived social acceptability of the shaming content and emotional arousal may have in explaining social media behavior after witn

"They don't think much of you if you're using": Stigma among criminalised people who smoke methamphetamine in Victoria, Australia.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, methamphetamine ('ice') use has been framed as a major social problem, contributing to punitive policy responses and ongoing criminalisation through which stigma is enacted. Although smoking is the predominant route of use, little is known about how people who smoke methamphetamine experience stigma. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with nine people with histories of smoking methamphetamine, no lifetime history of injecting drug use; and prior interactions with the criminal legal system in Victoria, Australia. Interviews explored experiences of drug use an

Parabrachial oxytocin receptor-expressing neurons link social observation of distress to defensive behavior.

The ability to detect and respond to threat signals in the environment, including those conveyed by the distress of a familiar social partner, is fundamental to survival and disrupted in a range of neuropsychiatric conditions. This study identifies oxytocin receptor (Oxtr)-expressing neurons within the lateral parabrachial nucleus (lPBN) of mice as a key node in the neural circuitry underlying threat-related and social behaviors. These Oxtr neurons are activated by aversive stimuli and by observing demonstrator mice in stressful situations, including foot shock or inflammatory pain. Chemogenet

Cocaine use in Europe: the need for cross-sectoral collaboration between security, justice, health, and social systems.

Cocaine use has increased in Europe over the past decade, raising concerns regarding its associated harms. This increase is driven by the contemporary transformation of the international cocaine supply chain, which has led to increased availability, purity, and use rates. Cocaine use affects both health and society, challenging European countries' health and social care capabilities and models. Addressing these challenges requires multisectoral collaboration to understand the issues better and develop appropriate public health strategies. Integrating security, social, and health policies is th

Cerebellar damage with inflammation upregulates oxytocin receptor expression in Bergmann Glia.

The cerebellum plays an important role in cognitive and social functioning. Childhood damage in the cerebellum increases the risk of autism spectrum disorder. Cerebellar inflammation induces social avoidance in mice. Oxytocin regulates social relationship and expression pattern of the oxytocin receptor in the brain is related to social behaviors. However, the expression patterns of the oxytocin receptor in the cerebellum remain controversial. Here, we report that the expression patterns of the oxytocin receptor in the cerebellum are highly variable among knock-in transgenic lines. We used Oxtr

Social Media in the Management of Obesity and Diabetes: An Underutilised Population Educational Tool.

Obesity and diabetes are two of the most common chronic medical conditions encountered, putting an ever-increasing strain on healthcare systems worldwide. Social media meanwhile has taken the world by storm over the last 2 decades, providing a way to distribute information instantly and on a vast scale at the click of a button. The use of social media to aid in the management of obesity and diabetes though is an underutilised tool, with the potential to help in educating and supporting these patients in numerous ways both now and in the future, on a grand scale. The caveat to this, however, is

Does putting down your smartphone make you happier? the effects of restricting digital media on well-being.

Both scientists and laypeople have become increasingly concerned about smartphones, especially their associated digital media (e.g., email, news, gaming, and dating apps) and social media (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat). Recent correlational research links substantial declines in Gen Z well-being to digital and social media use, yet other work suggests the effects are small and unnoteworthy. To help further disentangle correlation from causation, we conducted a preregistered 8-day experimental deprivation study with Gen Z individuals (N = 338). Participants were randomly assigned to one
