"I like talking to people on the computer": Outcomes of a home-based intervention to develop social media skills in youth with disabilities living in rural communities.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effectiveness of a home-based social media use intervention to enhance the social networks of rural youth with disabilities. METHOD: Participants were nine youth (mean age = 17.0 years) with disabilities from two rural Australian communities. The intervention consisted of providing appropriate assistive technology and social media training on individualised goals. Using mixed methods, quantitative (a single group pre-post) and qualitative (interviews with participants and their carers) measures were used to examine outcomes of training, individual experiences of th

Social anxiety spectrum and diminished positive experiences: theoretical synthesis and meta-analysis.

Until recently, there has been limited recognition that diminished positive psychological experiences are important to understanding the nature of social anxiety. Meta-analytic techniques were used to evaluate the strength, consistency, and construct specificity of relations between the social anxiety spectrum with positive affect and curiosity. The social anxiety spectrum had significant inverse relations with positive affect (r=-.36; 95% CI: -.31 to -.40) and curiosity (r=-.24; 95% CI: -.20 to -.28). Relations between social anxiety and positive affect were stronger in studies sampling from

The relationship between social support and sleep quality in older adults: A review of the evidence.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep quality is crucial for the health and well-being of older adults, and social support has been consistently shown to be related to sleep quality. However, there is a need for research to understand the mechanisms through which these two factors are linked. The purpose of this review is to synthesize scientific literature on the relationship between social support and sleep quality in older adults. METHODS: Using an integrative review method, this review was conducted for a period from January 2012 to November 2022 using a combination of keywords related to social support and

Comprehensive approaches to Traumatic Brain Injury: bridging physical, emotional, and social dimensions for global health care.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a significant global health issue, affecting millions annually and resulting in physical, cognitive, emotional, and social challenges. While medical management, including neurosurgical interventions and rehabilitation, is well-documented, the emotional, psychological, and social dimensions of TBI remain underexplored. This gap in understanding hinders the development of holistic approaches to care. METHOD: This article adopts an interdisciplinary approach, synthesizing existing literature to analyze the multifaceted impacts of TBI, as a narrative

Trust tangles: Who do kids trust? Unraveling young children's attitudes in the gossip mill.

OBJECTIVE: As an important channel of social-information transmission, gossip enables individuals to acquire reputational information indirectly and to guide partner selection. This study systematically investigates the cognitive development from social evaluation to trust-based decision-making in children. Through two experiments, we examine how young children evaluate different roles in gossip scenarios and how those evaluations influence subsequent trust decisions. METHODS: Study 1 examined how 141 children (aged 5-7) integrated factors such as gossip valence, emotional cues, and informati

Psychiatry at crossroads yet again: social policies must lead the way.

The global burden of mental and substance use disorders is rising at an unprecedented rate worldwide, driven by a complex and evolving network of social determinants. Mental health policies are predominantly rooted in biomedical frameworks and interventions, partially considering the crucial social, economic, and political factors that fundamentally shape mental health outcomes. Thus, policy responses often emphasize individualized, symptom-focused treatments, primarily psychopharmacological, while overlooking structural inequities. A paradigm shift is imperative: mental health policies must i

Anthropological research and the politics of HIV prevention: towards a critique of policy and priorities in the age of AIDS.

This paper is based on the author's ethnographic HIV prevention research at a community-based residence for women in New York City who have a history of homelessness and diagnosis of mental illness. The author presents the human face of this American tragedy, while exploring the ways in which larger social forces circumscribe these women's lives. The author also critically assesses the HIV prevention agenda, including the dominant paradigm in prevention intervention. Despite acceptance by the most prominent players in AIDS prevention in the United States, the most popular prevention theories a

Disturbance of social cognition after traumatic orbitofrontal brain injury.

A patient with traumatic orbitomedial frontal lobe damage demonstrated good neurocognitive recovery but a lasting, profound disturbance of emotional regulation and social cognition. Initial neuropsychological findings included a complete anosmia, mildly reduced fluency and disturbed motor regulation. The impairments of fluency and motor regulation resolved, and formal measures of "frontal lobe" functioning were generally intact. However, she remained impaired on tasks requiring the interpretation of social situations, which mirrored her impairment in real life functioning. This disturbance in

Dimensional asymmetries in social attention: Dynamic head movements elicit opposite attentional biases in vertical versus horizontal dimensions.

When observing a person with direct gaze but a horizontally averted head posture, attention often shifts opposite to head direction (overshoot effect). We investigated whether this effect generalizes to vertical head movements and whether it depends on gaze direction information. Across four experiments, centrally presented faces shifted dynamically to averted head positions before a target appeared at a location congruent or incongruent with head direction. Vertical head movements (Experiments 1 and 2) produced head-congruency effects, which were stronger when the eyes were closed. In contras

Junior-to-senior transition in men's sport under dual institutional constraints: a comparison of team and individual athletes.

BACKGROUND: The transition from junior to senior sport is a multifaceted process involving psychological, physical, social, and organizational demands, and is conceptualized through several models of athletic development and career transitions. This study examined how Israeli junior athletes experience this transition, with particular attention to structural differences between individual (swimming) and team (basketball) sports and their implications for progression within elite sport pathways. METHODS: A qualitative design combining deductive theory-informed analysis with inductive thematic

Chromatin Accessibility Profiling of the Canine Brain Reveals Regulatory Programs Associated With Dog-Wolf Divergence and Human Psychiatric Risk.

The domestic dog has emerged as a valuable model for investigating the biology of social behavior and neuropsychiatric disease, yet a comprehensive map of gene regulatory elements across the canine brain is still lacking. Here, we generated an ATAC-seq atlas spanning seven major brain regions and the pituitary gland from four adult beagle dogs. We identified 251,492 putative cis-regulatory elements (CREs) and found that chromatin accessibility profiles resolve anatomically distinct regions into discrete regulatory modules, including striatal, cortical-associated, hypothalamic/habenular, and pi

Integrating Cardiology and Public Health: A Review of Population-Based Strategies for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention.

This review examines population-based strategies for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention and evaluates how integration between cardiology and public health can facilitate effective and scalable approaches to reducing the global CVD burden. Despite major therapeutic advances, the incidence and mortality of cardiovascular disease continue to increase, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), driven by demographic transitions, lifestyle changes, and socioeconomic inequities. Using a structured narrative synthesis, the review draws on epidemiological evidence, risk factor fram

A qualitative study of the lived experiences of working age adults living with adventitious total bilateral blindness in Nigeria.

Working age adults living with adventitious blindness (occurring from age five) in Nigeria face significant challenges, including rehabilitation, depriving them of the quality of care required for successful adaptation and integration. This study aimed to explore their lived experiences to inform policy and service delivery. Dahlgren and Whitehead's socioecological model underpinned this study to highlight how institutions and society shape participants' lives. In-depth interviews were conducted with 40 participants on multi-level and multi-dimensional factors, including environmental, economi

From Surgery to Strength: The Case for Mental Health Integration in Ileostomy Care.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Ileostomy, a surgical intervention required for conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colorectal cancer, trauma, and sepsis, can be a transformative intervention and imposes substantial physical and psychological challenges on patients. While the physical aspects of ileostomy care are well addressed, the psychological burden-marked by anxiety, depression, and diminished quality of life-remains underrecognized in clinical practice. This perspective article underscores the critical role of mental health in ileostomy recovery, highlighting variations in psychological distress and r
