Social factors associated with the development of e-health literacy: A mixed-methods study among patient organization members and representatives.

The increasing digitalization of healthcare systems presents both opportunities and challenges for patients. A key challenge lies in cultivating e-health literacy, defined as the capacity to locate, comprehend, appraise, and use digital health information and services. This study employs a mixed-methods approach to investigate social and structural factors perceived as shaping patients' capability to use digital health services. A mixed-method approach guided the design, data collection, data analysis, and synthesis. This included semi-structured interviews and an online survey to corroborate

Help-Seeking for Suicidality Among Rural LGBTQ+ Youth: A Constructivist Grounded Theory Study.

Rural gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) youth face heightened suicidality risk due to social and structural health inequities, including isolation, stigma, and inaccessible mental health services. However, little is known about how LGBTQ+ youth seek help when experiencing suicidality. This constructivist grounded theory study examines the help-seeking processes of rural LGBTQ+ youth experiencing suicidality. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 15 rural-based LGBTQ+ youth (aged 16-25) in Quebec, Canada, we inductively developed the Theory Ma

Vulnerability profiles and prevalence of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections among adolescent girls and young women in Ethiopia: A latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) aged 15-24 years have among the highest risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI) across sub-Saharan Africa. A latent class analysis (LCA) was conducted to identify intersecting social- and structural-level determinants of HIV/STI acquisition among AGYW in Ethiopia. METHODS: AGYW were recruited from venues using time-location sampling, completing an interviewer-administered behavioral survey and biological testing for HIV, syphilis, and chlamydia. LCA was used to identify distinct groups, defined by social- and structural-

Leveraging COVID-19 Experiences to Prepare for the Future: A Pilot Study with Hospital Social Workers.

Social workers in hospital settings transformed their practice to meet the needs of patients, caregivers, and interdisciplinary team members during the COVID-19 pandemic. This included developing telehealth expertise to address patient and family needs, particularly at the end of life. In this pilot study, 10 hospital social workers from one New England tertiary adult medical center participated in a focus group (n = 7) or structured interview (n = 3). Guided by the four constructs of the social ecological model, four major themes emerged from the data highlighting hospital social workers' rol

Beyond biomedical interventions: social vaccinology as a framework for vaccination policy and public governance.

Despite the extraordinary scientific success of vaccines, vaccination policy continues to struggle to sustain public trust, legitimacy, and consistent uptake in many contemporary societies. Policy responses to these challenges frequently prioritize communication strategies, behavioral interventions, or stronger implementation, implicitly treating vaccination as a primarily biomedical intervention whose effectiveness depends on evidence dissemination and administrative execution. This article argues that such approaches overlook a structural limitation within vaccinology itself: the lack of an

Persistent dispositionalism in interactionist clothing: fundamental attribution error in explaining prison abuse.

The Stanford Prison Experiment demonstrated some important lessons about the power of social situations, settings, and structures to shape and transform behavior. At the time the study was done, the authors scrupulously addressed the issue of whether and how the dispositions or personality traits of the participants might have affected the results. Here the authors renew and reaffirm their original interpretation of the results and apply this perspective to some recent socially and politically significant events.

One health and human animal-bond intervention strategies- assessing veterinary-social service collaborations.

This study evaluates a novel interdisciplinary outreach model integrating veterinary care, social work, and public health services to serve unhoused populations and their companion animals in Topeka, Kansas. Grounded in structural vulnerability theory and One Health principles, the project examined the Street Dog Coalition's (SDC) partnership with the Mobile Access Partnership (MAP), focusing on how the human-animal bond functions as a catalyst for trust, engagement, and care continuity. Using a qualitatively driven, mixed-methods design, the research team conducted 12 semi-structured intervie

Reclaiming agency: how women build mood, confidence and social connections during perimenopause.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to understand women's lived experiences of perimenopause, with reference to brain fog, mood, confidence and social connectedness, and identify opportunities to promote well-being. METHOD: A qualitative, exploratory study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with 30 midlife women in Australia from culturally diverse backgrounds. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Participants described perimenopause as a recurring disruption-stabilization cycle rather than a linear decline. Destabi

American gun ownership and the ingroup/outgroup divide.

American protective gun ownership privatizes collective behavior, transmuting the role of the state to keep citizens safe into individual actions to protect one's family and one's immediate community. In doing so, owners may sharpen the ingroup/outgroup divide into those who need protection and those who need to be protected against. Using nationally representative individual-level data from the General Social Survey, we find that American gun owners have friendship structures that are more ingroup-focused than nonowners: more cohesive (more of owners' friends are friends with each other) and

Improving access for the vulnerable: a mixed-methods feasibility study of a pop-up model of care in south-eastern Melbourne, Australia.

Access to appropriate health and social care is challenging for vulnerable populations. We used a 'pop-up' delivery model to bring community-based services in contact with communities with poor access to health and social care. Our aim was to examine whether pop-up events improve access to essential health and social support services for selected vulnerable communities and increase collaboration between community-based health and social services. Set in south-eastern Melbourne, two pop-up events were held, one with people at risk of homelessness attending a community lunch and the other with S

Social isolation and the brain: effects and mechanisms.

An obvious consequence of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is the worldwide reduction in social interaction, which is associated with many adverse effects on health in humans from babies to adults. Although social development under normal or isolated environments has been studied since the 1940s, the mechanism underlying social isolation (SI)-induced brain dysfunction remains poorly understood, possibly due to the complexity of SI in humans and translational gaps in findings from animal models. Herein, we present a systematic review that focused on brain changes at the molecular, ce

Understanding the psychological drivers of online self-presentation: a survey study on social media exposure, social comparison, social network type and FOMO.

BACKGROUND: Social media users can choose how to project their image to make a positive impression on others through social media. Although online self-presentation desire is an emerging phenomenon that engages with the users' behavior on social media, empirical research and theoretical models on the topic are scarce. This study employs social comparison theory and the fear of missing out as mediators and social network type as a moderator to elucidate the effects of social media exposure on online self-presentation desire. METHODS: A quantitative survey was conducted among 367 social media u

Perceived social support and its impact on alcohol treatment outcomes: a qualitative study among women with HIV enrolled in a clinical alcohol pharmacotherapy trial.

BACKGROUND: Motivation to engage in treatment and maintain adherence is essential for people with unhealthy alcohol use. Social support may increase motivation to engage in treatment. Still, there is limited knowledge regarding social support providers and types of social support that facilitate or hinder alcohol treatment participation among women with HIV (WWH). This study explores social support among WWH in Florida: types, sources, and perceived impact on drinking outcomes. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 WWH (mean age 49, 85% Black) with a history of unhealthy

The blood of my veins - mercury, Minamata and the soul of Japan.

The methylmercury contamination of Minamata Bay during the WWII postwar period resulted in thousands of Japanese citizens suffering horrific neurological injury. Fear and miscommunication destroyed and changed family and social structure. In addition, the Minamata poisoning caused momentous changes in the civic discourse in Japan and was an instrumental event in the democratization of the country. This manuscript describes the effects that the environmental contamination and human poising had in the transition of Japan from a feudal society to a democratic one.

Anatomy and physiology of velopharyngeal closure and insufficiency.

The velopharynx is a complex structure that is responsible for separation of the oral and nasal cavities during speech production and swallowing. Incompetence of this mechanism can lead to hypernasality, with nasal air emission and incomprehensible speech, as well as nasopharyngeal regurgitation. There can be a significant social stigma associated with velopharyngeal dysfunction, and surgical treatment can be curative in many cases. Knowledge of the normal anatomy and physiology of the velopharyngeal complex is essential when planning for surgical repair.

Confirmatory factor analysis of The Aggression Questionnaire.

A confirmatory factor analysis of the factor structure of The Aggression Questionnaire created by Buss and Perry (1992) [Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 63, 452-459] was conducted to assess whether the scale's purported 4 factors emerged. The results generally supported the 4-factor model. However, the hostility factor may be improved if 2 items pertaining to suspicion are removed from the scale. These items had relatively low loadings on that factor and decreased the hostility scale's internal reliability.

The individual's vs. the organization's doctor: value conflict in psychiatric aeromedical evaluation.

Physicians who perform aeromedical evaluations are aware of the value conflicts inherent in being both a physician and a social agent. This paper examines some of the conflicts which occur when the psychiatrist acts as an aeromedical examiner. Five areas are examined: 1) the use by the psychiatrist of the authority delegated by the social system, 2) issues of confidentiality, 3) efforts of the social system to influence the psychiatrist's findings, 4) the requirements to make decisions in areas where scientific data is lacking, and 5) the physician's imperative to "do no harm" to his patient.

Community Participation and Power Relations in Post-Disaster Recovery: A Qualitative Study from an Anti-Oppressive Social Work Perspective.

PURPOSE: This study examines the role of community participation in the post-disaster recovery processes of individuals who experienced the February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes from an anti-oppressive social work perspective. Although community participation and solidarity are increasingly emphasized in the post-disaster recovery literature, qualitative studies remain limited on how these processes intersect with institutional trust deficits, inequalities in access to services, stigmatization, power relations, and disaster survivors' experiences of regaining agency.
