Retrobulbar hemorrhage is a rare complication that may occur after mid-face injuries or following soft and hard tissue surgery around the eyes. The cardinal signs and symptoms of retrobulbar hemorrhage are pain, diplopia, ophthalmoplegia, a progression of increasing proptosis, and decreasing visual acuity leading to blindness. The diagnosis can be confirmed with computed tomography (CT) of the orbit or with ocular ultrasound. These diagnostic images are also important to define the size of the hematoma. This report describes a traumatic retrobulbar hemorrhage. In this case there were no signs

As pulmonary vein (PV) isolation by catheter ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation may cause PV luminal stenosis, digital subtraction angiography or magnetic resonance imaging have been used to evaluate the lumen of the PV. Electrocardiogram-gated multislice computed tomography can evaluate the lumen of the PV from any plane desired after acquisition with excellent spatial resolution. It can also evaluate hyperplasia of soft tissue around the lumen of the PV, which cannot be evaluated by digital subtraction angiography, and may thus serve as an indicator of complications or even the effe

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis is a rare, rapidly progressive, severe bacterial infection of the soft tissues of the neck. Uncommonly, it may descend into the mediastinum. We describe a case of descending necrotizing mediastinitis in a young man, where there was diagnostic confusion and delay, with an eventual fatal outcome. A steroid injection for neck pain is thought to be the source of infection. In this case, the signs of mediastinitis were initially masked, and the diagnosis delayed until cardiopulmonary arrest occurred. Early recognition with a low threshold for computed tomography (CT)

Injuries to the knee and tibial/fibular shafts are extremely common, with knee injuries alone accounting for over 1.3 million emergency department visits yearly in the United States. Many of these injuries will present with straightforward radiographic findings, but others will have a subtle or complex appearance. This article reviews injuries of the knee and proximal tibial/fibular shaft with emphasis on normal anatomic features that, when disrupted, indicate the presence of subtle but important bone or soft tissue trauma. Although the emphasis is on plain radiography, magnetic resonance (MR)

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) arise in the pleura and less commonly in extrapleural sites. Head and neck regions have included the nose and paranasal sinuses, soft palate, epiglottis, thyroid, parotid and submandibular glands, as well as the infratemporal fossa and parapharyngeal space. We report a case of SFT arising from the parotid gland and extending to the parapharyngeal space. To our knowledge, this is the fourth case of SFT originating from the parotid gland and is the largest of its kind among the extrapleural lesions described. The characteristics revealed by computed tomography and m

A young man was seen for a mass on the left side of the neck. Computed tomography revealed a round mass suggesting a lymph node metastasis with a necrotic center. Fine needle aspiration found mesenchymal cells. The tumor excised from its location on the Xth left cranial nerve was found to be a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor. Treatment was complemented by regional irradiation. After concluding complementary treatment in April 1996, the patient currently is disease-free. This type of soft-tissue sarcoma is reviewed. Survival depends on tumoral size and cellular differentiation.

A case of ocular duplication with complex craniofacial and central nervous system anomalies is described. The anomaly is termed triopia because the child's most overt and distinguishing feature was three eyes: the left orbit contained two globes with independent ocular adnexa; the right orbit contained one normal appearing and functioning globe. Computer assisted medical imaging was used to define, in vivo, the intra- and extracranial soft and hard tissue anomalies: the cerebral hemisphere ipsilateral to the ocular duplication was also duplicated. Possible bases for this anomaly include duplic

Ten patients with one or more ureteral tumors were examined with CT. The tumor was clearly recognizable as a soft tissue mass (average density 46 HU) filling the ureter in nine of the patients. In five of these patients the tumor was not detected by urography. Tumors less than 5 mm in diameter were missed on CT in one patient. Although most ureteral tumors are detectable with urography and retrograde pyelography, CT can be a valuable diagnostic tool. Computed tomography is particularly advantageous in patients with nonfunctioning kidneys and in those in whom retrograde pyelography is unsuccess

A patient with Wegener granulomatosis presented with diffuse tracheal narrowing and was evaluated using CT and cine-CT. The CT findings included severe laryngeal and tracheal airway narrowing, due to abnormal soft tissue within the laryngeal cartilages and tracheal rings, and enlarged abnormally calcified tracheal cartilages. Computed tomography precisely confirmed the site, level, and submucosal extent of tracheal narrowing, not obtainable on physical or bronchoscopic examination, and assisted in choosing a site for tracheostomy. Wegener granulomatosis should be considered in patients with di

The initial and follow-up computed tomographic (CT) examinations of 19 patients with surgically proven invasive thymoma were reviewed; 10 have been previously reported. Transdiaphragmatic extension of tumor was observed in six (31.5%) of the 19 patients. Sites of infradiaphragmatic invasion included the right lateral liver surface, posterior pararenal space, left paraaortic region, perigastric soft tissue, and spinal canal. In the patient with known or suspected invasive thymoma, transdiaphragmatic extension is a common occurrence that requires routine CT imaging of the upper abdomen to avoid

Thirty-two patients with severe cervical rheumatoid arthritis were investigated preoperatively with cervical myelography (CeM) and computed tomographic myelography (CTM). The severity of their clinical symptoms correlated excellently with a combination of the deformation of the spinal cord at the atlanto-axial level, the lateral dislocation of the cord at the same level, and the deformation of the cord at some lower cervical level. Obstructing soft-tissue excrescences seemed to have little significance. No correlation was found in this study between the deformation of the cord and the main fin

The results of computed tomography in 89 patients with tumours of the epipharynx and oropharynx involving the mouth are compared with the findings of other forms of clinical examination. In 26 patients, CT provided additional relevant information, in eight patients CT provided less information than clinical examination. The value of CT depended largely on the localisation of the tumour; the poorest results were found in tumours of the tonsils and the soft palate. CT provided additional information most commonly with large tumours, since these are frequently associated with bone destruction, lo

Computer tomography, a new noninvasive, rapid and easily tolerated technique of brain examination, has been evaluated by analysis of 1000 examinations. It is much more sensitive than conventional radiographic techniques and can resolve soft-tissue structures that differ only slightly in density. It also provides direct visualization of the ventricular system. The range of clinical applications is wide; it is especially useful in differentiating intracerebral hemorrhage from infarction, and in demonstrating many brain tumours, particularly supratentorial, though enhancement with a water-soluble

Superior lumbar hernias (Grynfeltt's hernias) are a rare type of abdominal wall hernia that may be under-recognized, particularly, by non-surgical physicians, because of their subtle and non-specific presentation. We report a case of an 82-year-old woman with a right-sided superior lumbar hernia initially suspected as a lipoma. The patient presented with a soft, painless mass on her right upper back that varied with posture, becoming prominent when standing and disappearing when supine. Physical examination showed a soft, mobile, non-tender subcutaneous mass. Although initially thought to be a

INTRODUCTION: In the diagnostics of orthopedic diseases in the horse, diagnostic imaging often plays a decisive role. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging is used in both human and small animal medicine and becoming increasingly popular. To see whether CBCT imaging can be useful in the diagnosis of orthopedic diseases of the carpal region of the horse and to explore possible limitations we compared CBCT images with multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) images of the carpal region of equine cadaveric specimens.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight forelimbs from fifteen horses, slaug

Intracranial volume (ICV) is an important parameter for monitoring patients with multisutural craniosynostosis. Intracranial volume measurements are routinely derived from computed tomography (CT) head scans, which involves ionizing radiation. Estimation of ICV from head surface volumes could prove useful as 3D surface scanners could be used to indirectly acquire ICV information, using a non-invasive, non-ionizing method.Pre- and postoperative 3D CT scans from spring-assisted posterior vault expansion (sPVE) patients operated between 2008 and 2018 in a single center were collected. Patients we

This report focuses a defect comprising the complete mandible due to osteonecrosis, including both condyles, that required bilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) reconstruction with complete mandibular corpus using a computer-aided-design and computer-aided-manufacturing(CAD-CAM) planning to harvest a scapula chimeric free flap combined with plate including bilateral alloplastic TMJ prosthesis. This procedure was realized in one and the same surgery. A 73 year-old-man developed an osteoradionecrosis of the total mandible including both condyles after radiation therapy for a squamous cell carc

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a rare kind of soft tissue plasma cell neoplasm without bone marrow involvement; this type of plasma cell neoplasm involves a lack of other systemic characteristics of multiple myeloma. Primary pulmonary plasmacytoma (PPP), with no specific clinical manifestations, is an exceedingly rare type of EMP. Because of its complexity, PPP is often difficult to diagnose, and there is no report in the literature on cases accompanied by overlap syndrome (OS).
CASE SUMMARY: A 61-year-old woman without a familial lung cancer history was admitted to our hosp

Magnetic resonance (MR), X-ray computed tomography (CT), and angiographic images best depict soft tissue, bone, and blood vessels respectively. No one on its own is sufficient in the preoperative assessment of cranial base lesions. We have developed and evaluated a computational technique for the three-dimensional (3D) combination and display of multimodality images for planning cranial base surgery. This evaluation was prospective and performed in such a way that the results could be quantified. Eight patients (three acoustic neuromas, four subfrontal and suprasellar meningiomas, and one petr
