Screening dysphagia risk in 534 older patients undergoing rehabilitation after total joint replacement: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Older people affected by severe osteoarthritis could need to undergo total joint replacement, with a consequent hospitalization and rehabilitation. In this postacute phase, they might suffer from other symptoms, including dysphagia, defined as a dysfunction of the digestive system, characterized by an objective difficulty or a sensation of difficulty in swallowing. It is considered as a very challenging problem in older people and early detection is fundamental for a prompt and effective management. However, up to date, there is a lack of data on dysphagia risk screening in orthope

Naming as a window to word retrieval changes in healthy and pathological ageing: Methodological considerations.

BACKGROUND: Word retrieval skills change across the lifespan. Permanent alterations in the form of decreased accuracy or increased response time can be a consequence of both normal ageing processes or the presence of acquired and neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., aphasia and dementia). Despite the extensive literature exploring the neuroanatomical underpinnings of word retrieval, psycholinguistic, biolinguistic and theoretical explanations, and the vast amount of evidence from primary and secondary language disorders, the best approach to consistently capture these changes is yet to be discov

Deep Brain Stimulation as a Rehabilitation Amplifier: A Precision-Oriented, Network-Guided Framework for Functional Restoration in Movement Disorders.

Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is increasingly understood as a precision-oriented neuromodulation therapy capable of influencing distributed basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical and cerebellothalamic networks. Although its symptomatic benefits in Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia are well established, the extent to which DBS supports motor learning, adaptive plasticity, and participation in rehabilitation remains insufficiently defined. Traditional interpretations of DBS as a focal or lesion-like intervention are being challenged by electrophysiological and imaging eviden

Consensus Paper: Revisiting the Symptoms and Signs of Cerebellar Syndrome.

The cerebellum is involved in sensorimotor operations, cognitive tasks and affective processes. Here, we revisit the concept of the cerebellar syndrome in the light of recent advances in our understanding of cerebellar operations. The key symptoms and signs of cerebellar dysfunction, often grouped under the generic term of ataxia, are discussed. Vertigo, dizziness, and imbalance are associated with lesions of the vestibulo-cerebellar, vestibulo-spinal, or cerebellar ocular motor systems. The cerebellum plays a major role in the online to long-term control of eye movements (control of calibrati

Enzyme Replacement Therapy in CLN2-Associated Retinopathy.

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses, also known as Batten disease, are comprised of a group of genetically heterogenous neurodegenerative conditions, characterized by dementia, epilepsy, motor deterioration, and blindness. The underlying pathology is a dysregulation of lysosomal catabolic protein metabolism, resulting in an accumulation of lipofuscein-like material within the lysosomes in neuronal tissue, which ultimately leads to atrophy in the central nervous system and in the retina. Ceroid lipofuscinosis type 2 (CLN2) is caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the TPP1 gene, encoding lysosom

[Study of agency in the discourse of women suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder in the aftermath of domestic violence].

INTRODUCTION: In the absence of appropriate care, psychotraumatic consequences (revival, hyperarousal, avoidance strategies, dissociation and other clinical forms of post traumatic symptoms) can take control of a large part of the subject's existence (psychological, physical, social) and affect the ability of the victim to regain ground on the intrusions that harass, and to take up new life projects. More objective than the current semiological and psychometric approaches, and in the absence of biomarkers that may be used in clinical practice, psycholinguistics opens up an epistemological rene

Multidisciplinary rehabilitation of Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome using zygomatic implants: A 3-year case report.

BACKGROUND: Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by palmoplantar keratoderma and rapidly progressive periodontitis, resulting in early tooth loss and severe alveolar bone resorption. Prosthetic rehabilitation in such patients remains a significant clinical challenge due to compromised bone support and functional limitations. This report aims to evaluate the effectiveness of zygomatic implants as part of a multidisciplinary approach for oral rehabilitation in a patient with PLS. METHODS: A 17-year-old female with a confirmed diagnosis of PLS pres

Association of PSP phenotypes with survival: A brain-bank study.

INTRODUCTION: The MDS-PSP criteria expand the phenotypic spectrum of PSP by adding to Richardson's syndrome (PSP-RS) other presentations such as PSP-parkinsonism (PSP-P), PSP-pure-gait-freezing (PSP-PGF), PSP-speech-language (PSP-SL), PSP-frontal (PSP-F), PSP-postural-instability (PSP-PI) and PSP-corticobasal-syndrome (PSP-CBS). Evidence about the prognostic differences between PSP phenotypes is scarce and focused on PSP-RS vs. non-PSP-RS. Using a brain-bank cohort we assessed PSP survival not only in PSP-RS vs. non-PSP-RS, but also in PSP-RS + cortical vs. subcortical phenotypes. Besides, we

Students' interaction anxiety and social phobia in interprofessional education in Hong Kong: mapping a new research direction.

BACKGROUND: Interprofessional education (IPE) has been promoted as a breakthrough in healthcare because of the impact when professionals work as a team. However, despite its inception dating back to the 1960s, its science has taken a long time to advance. There is a need to theorize IPE to cultivate creative insights for a nuanced understanding of IPE. This study aims to propose a research agenda on social interaction by understanding the measurement scales used and guiding researchers to contribute to the discussion of social processes in IPE. METHOD: This quantitative research was undertake

Transgender voice and communication treatment: a retrospective chart review of 25 cases.

BACKGROUND: People transitioning from male to female (MTF) gender seek speech-language pathology services when they feel their voice is betraying their genuine self or perhaps is the last obstacle to representing their authentic gender. Speaking fundamental frequency (pitch) and resonance are most often targets in treatment because the combination of these two voice characteristics can account for the majority of how listeners perceive a speaker's gender. Intonation, voice quality, pragmatics and non-verbal communication contribute to a lesser extent but are usually recommended in treatment gu…

Susceptibility-weighted imaging in patients with Corticobasal Syndrome or Progressive Supranuclear Palsy: distribution of iron deposits reflects clinical symptoms in 4-R tauopathies.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with corticobasal syndrome (CBS) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) often show the loss of the "swallow tail sign", which reflects degeneration of dopaminergic neurons and iron accumulation in the substantia nigra pars compacta, and peculiar neuroradiological signs which are, respectively, asymmetrical frontoparietal atrophy and midbrain atrophy. A T2* hypointense rim likely reflecting presence and distribution of neuroinflammation has been recently reported in the frontal cortex of CBS patients. Here we investigated (i) the frequency of conventional radi
