OBJECTIVE: Postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) admission might be required in adolescent patients following posterior fusion and instrumentation surgery for the treatment of scoliosis. We aimed to evaluate the predictive factors for mechanical ventilation and the characteristics of the patients who required an ICU stay following spinal surgery.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 85 children undergoing primary scoliosis surgery at a university-affiliated general hospital from January 2010 and June 2020 by the same spinal surgeon. The demographic data, pre- and peritoperati

OBJECTIVE: Anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF) is employed in patients with localized cervical spinal stenosis (CSS). However, there are some disadvantages such as subsidence of the titanium mesh cage, slow fusion rates, breakage of the plate and screws, and donor-site complications. For patients with small posterior osteophytes, ossified or hypertrophy of the posterior longitudinal ligaments or ligamentum flavum, the range of decompression from the classic anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) cannot meet the clinical requirements. However, employing ACCF is controversial.

Conventional polymer multielectrode arrays (MEAs) have limitations resulting from a high Young's modulus, including low conformability and gaps between the electrodes and neurons. These gaps are not a problem in soft tissues such as the brain, due to the repopulation phenomenon. However, gaps can result in signal degradation when recording from a fiber bundle, such as the spinal cord. Methods: We propose a method for fabricating flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based MEAs featuring plateau-shaped microelectrodes. The proposed fabrication technique enables the electrodes on the surface of M

A review of a few Swedish research projects on soft tissue neck injuries in car collisions is presented together with some new results. Efforts to determine neck injury mechanisms was based on a hypothesis stating that injuries to the nerve root region in the cervical spine are a result of transient pressure gradients in the spinal canal during rapid neck bending. In experimental neck trauma research on animals, pressure gradients were observed and indications of nerve cell membrane dysfunction were found in the cervical spinal ganglia. The experiments covered neck extension, flexion and later

BACKGROUND: Vertebral anterior overgrowth has been suggested as part of the etio-pathogenesis of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). However, the link between 3D spinopelvic alignment and the vertebral anteroposterior height asymmetry in different scoliotic curves types and whether it deviates from the non-scoliotic controls, has not been studied.
PURPOSE: We aimed to retrospectively describe the link between the anteroposterior vertebral height differences (ΔAPVH) measured in the true sagittal plane of each vertebra and the spinopelvic parameters in three anatomical planes.
METHODS: 30 A

Many authors are interested in the effects that a specific exercise program could have on sagittal spinal curvatures. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of different exercise programs on thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordotic angle. This meta-analysis adhered to the PRISMA guideline and it was registered at PROSPERO. Five electronic databases (Pub Med, Cochrane, WOS, PEDro and EBSCO) were searched up to 31 July 2018. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials that applied an exercise intervention and measured a kyphosis and/or lordotic angle. Study quality was perfor…

PURPOSE: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a complex, three-dimensional (3D) spinal deformity characterized by both coronal curvature and axial rotation. Traditional radiographic measurements primarily reflect the internal spinal alignment but do not fully capture external surface asymmetry or rotational components. Moreover, patients' perceptions of their trunk deformity often diverge from radiographic findings. This discrepancy may be attributed to various sources of bias in patient self-assessment. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between preoperative 3D body s

Although some reports on neurostimulation are positive, no effective treatment method for camptocormia in Parkinson's disease (PD) is known to date. We aim to identify prognostic factors for a beneficial DBS effect on camptocormia. In an observational cohort study, we investigated 25 idiopathic PD patients, who suffered additionally from camptocormia, and underwent bilateral neurostimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) to improve classical PD symptoms. Using an established questionnaire, we examined deep brain stimulation (DBS) effects on camptocormia in addition to general neurostimulati

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to identify factors predictive of postoperative improvement of camptocormia in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) treated by subthalamic nucleus (STN) stimulation.
BACKGROUND: Camptocormia, one of the most disabling features of PD, often responds poorly to medical therapies. The reported effects of deep brain stimulation on PD-associated camptocormia vary, and preoperative characteristics affecting the surgical outcome remain unclear.
METHODS: We evaluated 17 patients with camptocormia whose preoperative off-medication thoracolumbar angle exceeded 45°.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of spinal deformity is a significant health concern often associated with the aging process. It is primarily attributed to the thickening of spinal joints, ligament pathologies, or the narrowing of the spinal canal, leading to compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots, and subsequently causing musculoskeletal problems. When considering corrective surgery for adult spinal deformities, it is crucial for spine surgeons to take into account the standard values of sagittal spinopelvic alignment. Notably, there is currently a lack of specific data on this aspect withi

The normal sagittal alignment of the cervical spine is lordotic and is affected by the posture of the head and neck. The question of whether loss of cervical lordosis is the result of muscle spasm after injury or a normal variation, and the clinical significance of such changes in sagittal profile of the cervical spine has been an issue of several studies. The purpose of this paper is to study the incidence of normal cervical lordosis and its changes after neck injury compared to the healthy population. We studied the lateral radiographs of the cervical spine of 60 patients with neck injury co
