Interaction of Insomnia and Somatization with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Pregnant Women During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has an adverse impact on the emotional health of prenatal maternal women and their offspring. During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, pregnant women are vulnerable to traumatic events and are prone to PTSD symptoms. The aim of the study was to explore the predictive effects of insomnia and somatization on PTSD in pregnant women by utilizing generalized additive model (GAM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1638 pregnant women from three local cities in China underwent online survey on sleep quality, somatization, and PTSD s

Neurofeedback with low-cost, wearable electroencephalography (EEG) reduces symptoms in chronic Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

BACKGROUND: The study examines the effectiveness of both neurofeedback and motor-imagery brain-computer interface (BCI) training, which promotes self-regulation of brain activity, using low-cost electroencephalography (EEG)-based wearable neurotechnology outside a clinical setting, as a potential treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Rwanda. METHODS: Participants received training/treatment sessions along with a pre- and post- intervention clinical assessment, (N = 29; control n = 9, neurofeedback (NF, 7 sessions) n = 10, and motor-imagery (MI, 6 sessions) n = 10). Parental Psychological Flexibility as a Mediating Factor of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Children after Hospitalization or Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Illness, surgery, and surgical hospitalization are significant stressors for children. Children exposed to such medical events may develop post-traumatic medical syndrome (PMTS, pediatric medical traumatic stress) that could slow their physical and emotional recovery. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between the level of parental psychological resilience and the development of PMTS in young children. METHOD: We surveyed 152 parents of children aged 1-6 who were admitted to the pediatric surgery department. Parents completed questionnaires in two phases. In the firs

Self-Representations of Military Veterans Suffering From Chronic Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: The Role of Sport.

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric illness that is very prevalent in both civilian and military environments. The clinical course, regardless of management, is chronic for a number of patients, especially veterans. Persistent PTSD symptoms interact with representations of the person and their body, and may negatively impact rehabilitation. Sport is known to help psychiatric patients such as those suffering from PTSD, as it improves the connection with the body, and supports physiological and emotional regulation. However, the impact of sport on self-representati

An investigation into the bidirectional relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidal ideation: A nine year study.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death in adolescents; a frequent precursor of suicide is suicidal ideation (SI). Literature indicates that Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and SI are robust cross-sectional correlates of one another, with PTSD often being conceptualized as a risk factor (i.e., conferring risk) for SI. Indeed, PTSD is a well-established risk factor for SI; however, SI is an understudied risk factor for PTSD. It is possible that, yet unknown if, PTSD and SI promote each other over time in a bidirectional fashion. We investigated the bidirectional longitudinal associat

Investigating extra-medical opioid use and social networks among people with post-traumatic stress disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and extra-medical opioid Use (EMOU) frequently co-occur. Few studies have examined the relationship between EMOU and social networks among people with PTSD. Accordingly, this study examined social networks in a sample of people with PTSD in the United States by assessing the association between social network size/diversity and lifetime EMOU status. METHODS: Data came from a cross-sectional, nationally representative sample of adults who participated in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III) from

Key dimensions of post-traumatic stress disorder and endothelial dysfunction: a protocol for a mechanism-focused cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Both trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death in the USA. Endothelial dysfunction, a modifiable, early marker of CVD risk, may represent a physiological mechanism underlying this association. This mechanism-focused cohort study aims to investigate the relationship between PTSD (both in terms of diagnosis and underlying symptom dimensions) and endothelial dysfunction in a diverse, community-based sample of adult men and women. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Using a cohort design

Post-traumatic stress disorder and risky opioid use among persons living with HIV and chronic pain.

Persons with HIV (PWH) experience chronic pain and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at higher rates than the general population, and more often receive opioid medications to treat chronic pain. A known association exists between PTSD and substance use disorders, but less is known about the relationship between PTSD and risky opioid use among PWH taking prescribed opioid medications. In this observational study of PWH on long-term opioid medications for pain we examined associations between PTSD symptom severity based on the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5, respon

Military veterans with and without post-traumatic stress disorder: results from a chronic pain management programme.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There is very little published evaluation of the treatment of military veterans with chronic pain, with or without post-traumatic stress disorder. Few clinical services offer integrated treatment for veterans with chronic pain and PTSD. Such veterans experience difficulty in accessing treatment for either condition: services may consider each condition as a contraindication to treatment of the other. Veterans are therefore often passed from one specialist service to another without adequate treatment. The veteran pain management programme (PMP) in the UK was established to

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis on Acute Stress Disorder: Rates Following Different Types of Traumatic Events.

Studies investigating rates of acute stress disorder following exposure to a traumatic event report widely varying results, even when examining the same types of traumatic events. The first purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to describe rates of acute stress disorder following five different types of traumatic events. The second goal was to assess the methodological and trauma-related factors influencing these rates. Between May 2017 and October 2019, studies were identified by searching through the PsychINFO, PubMed/Medline, OVID, CINAHL, Scopus, and PILOTS databases. Rec

Post-traumatic stress disorder mistaken for behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia: case series and recommendations of care.

In late life, traumas may act cumulatively to exacerbate vulnerability to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is also a risk factor for cognitive decline. Major neurocognitive disorder (MND) can be associated with worsening of already controlled PTSD symptoms, late-life resurgence or de novo emergence. Misidentifying PTSD symptoms in MND can have negative consequences for the patient and families. We review the literature pertaining to PTSD and dementia and describe five cases referred for consultation in geriatric psychiatry initially for behavioural and psychological symptoms of deme

FDG PET imaging of vascular inflammation in post-traumatic stress disorder: A pilot case-control study.

UNLABELLED: The prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is increased in subjects with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Vascular inflammation mediates CVD and may be assessed by 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. In this pilot study, we investigated whether subjects with PTSD have enhanced vascular and systemic inflammation compared to healthy controls, as assessed by FDG PET imaging. METHODS: A prospective group of 16 subjects (9 PTSD and 7 controls, age 34 ± 7) without prior history of CVD underwent FDG PET/CT imaging. The presence of PTSD symp

Methylomic profiles reveal sex-specific differences in leukocyte composition associated with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental disorder precipitated by trauma exposure. However, only some persons exposed to trauma develop PTSD. There are sex differences in risk; twice as many women as men develop a lifetime diagnosis of PTSD. Methylomic profiles derived from peripheral blood are well-suited for investigating PTSD because DNA methylation (DNAm) encodes individual response to trauma and may play a key role in the immune dysregulation characteristic of PTSD pathophysiology. In the current study, we leveraged recent methodological advances to investigate sex-s
