Negative affect interacts with perceptual affective biases.

BACKGROUND: Affective biases are central to mood and anxiety disorders, with individuals often interpreting ambiguous facial expressions more negatively. Adaptation paradigms, where exposure to emotional stimuli shifts perception, provide a tool to separate perceptual from decisional biases, but have not been used to study emotional biases relevant to affective disorders. AIMS: To determine whether affective biases in facial emotion perception arise from perceptual or decisional processes, and to examine how these biases are modulated by individual differences in negative affect. METHODS: Ei

Effects of attentional instructions on neural and behavioral correlates of vocal auditory feedback control in post-stroke aphasia.

Existing evidence supports the notion that feedback-based attentional instructions can modulate vocal sensorimotor control mechanisms. Here, we investigated whether such instructions can improve the neural and behavioral functions for vocal auditory feedback control in individuals with aphasia. A total of 66 participants with post-stroke aphasia and 64 age-matched controls performed steady vocalizations of the speech vowel sound /a/ while their real-time auditory feedback was randomly altered by ±100 cents pitch-shift stimuli during electro-encephalography (EEG) recordings. Two conditions were

The attentional switching framework: A dual process account of how the brain switches when attention switches.

The capacity to flexibly shift attention between external and internal events is critical for everyday tasks, yet research on how this shifting operates at the cognitive and neural level is still emerging. Here, we examined the question: How does the brain switch when attention switches between external and internal states? We propose the Attentional Switching Framework, which postulates that switching between external and internal attention states involves two seemingly opposing mechanisms subserved by distinct neural bases. First, based on our Resource Dependent Account, the regulation of at

Neural activity associated with attention orienting triggered by implied action cues.

Spatial attention can be directed by the actions of others. We used ERPs method to investigate the neural underpins associated with attention orienting which is induced by implied body action. Participants performed a standard non-predictive cuing task, in which a directional implied action (throwing and running) or non-action (standing) cue was randomly presented and then followed by a target to the left or right of the central cue, despite cue direction. The cue-triggered ERPs results demonstrated that implied action cues, rather than the non-action cue, could shift the observers' spatial at

Night myopia studied with an adaptive optics visual analyzer.

PURPOSE: Eyes with distant objects in focus in daylight are thought to become myopic in dim light. This phenomenon, often called "night myopia" has been studied extensively for several decades. However, despite its general acceptance, its magnitude and causes are still controversial. A series of experiments were performed to understand night myopia in greater detail. METHODS: We used an adaptive optics instrument operating in invisible infrared light to elucidate the actual magnitude of night myopia and its main causes. The experimental setup allowed the manipulation of the eye's aberrations

Differential effects of amphetamine and haloperidol on temporal reproduction: dopaminergic regulation of attention and clock speed.

Healthy volunteers were tested on 7-s and 17-s peak-interval timing procedures following d-amphetamine (20mg-oral), haloperidol (2mg-oral), and placebo treatments in order to assess the dopaminergic regulation of temporal processing. Individual differences were observed in the drug effects such that two different patterns of timing behavior emerged. In the first pattern, d-amphetamine produced proportional leftward shifts of the timing functions while haloperidol produced proportional rightward shifts. This symmetrical pattern of results suggests that clock speed is regulated by the effective

Digit-specific aberrations in the primary somatosensory cortex in Writer's cramp.

OBJECTIVE: One approach to the treatment of focal hand dystonia (FHD) is via sensory-based training regimes. It is known that FHD patients demonstrate a reduced distance between the representations of digits 1 and 5 and also digits 2 and 5 in primary somatosensory cortex. However, we lack information on the spatial relationships among digits, such as reduced inter-digit spacing or shifts of representations within the cortical areas, and whether aberrations are specific to symptomatic digits. Our aim was to characterize the spatial relationships among individual digits to determine the types of

Simultaneous effects of sinusoidal whole body vibration and broadband noise on TTS2's and R-wave amplitudes in men at two different dry bulb temperatures.

The aim of this study was to investigate the temporary hearing threshold shift (TTS2) and R-wave amplitudes in eleven healthy males when they were exposed to paired sinusoidal whole body (Z-axis) vibration (5 Hz--2.12 m/s2) and stable broadband A-weighted white noise at dry bulb temperatures of 20 degrees C and 30 degrees C. The intensity of noise in the exposure combinations was 75, 85 and 95 dB(A). The total number of tests was 66, and they were carried out in an exposure chamber. The subjects were dressed in standard clothing, and carried out simple tasks using a choice reaction time device

A mixed effect similarity matrix regression model (SMRmix) for integrating multiple microbiome datasets at the community level.

Recent studies have highlighted the importance of the human microbiota in health and disease. However, in many areas of research, individual microbiome studies often provide inconsistent results due to limited sample sizes and the heterogeneity in study populations and experimental procedures. This inconsistency underscores the need for integrative analysis of multiple microbiome datasets. Despite the critical need, statistical methods that incorporate multiple microbiome datasets and account for study heterogeneity are not available in the literature. To address this, we propose a mixed effec

Top-down attentional control resilience reveals time-sensitive transcranial magnetic stimulation effects.

The frontal eye fields (FEFs) are critically involved in voluntary shifts of attention by sending top-down signals to posterior cortices to modulate local alpha-band activity. However, the exact temporo-spatial dynamics of this process are still unclear. Here, we investigated how covert shifts of attention and associated modulations of posterior alpha power are affected after FEF inhibition by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Neither right nor left FEF disruption impaired attention task performance. This absence of behavioral effects seems to be related to the here employed long cue-ta

Chronic caffeine decreases anxiety-like behavior in the marble burying task in adolescent rats.

Exposure to chronic caffeine during adolescence has been shown to produce decreased anxiety-like behaviors in rats as well as decreased immobility in the forced swim test (FST) suggesting an antidepressant-like effect. The effects of chronic caffeine on anxiety, however, have been found to be test-dependent and sexually dimorphic. In addition, decreased immobility in the FST has been argued to reflect a shift toward active coping behavior as opposed to an antidepressant-like effect. In order to further characterize the effects of adolescent caffeine exposure, the present experiment assessed th

Improving Anatomical Plausibility in Medical Image Segmentation via Hybrid Graph Neural Networks: Applications to Chest X-Ray Analysis.

Anatomical segmentation is a fundamental task in medical image computing, generally tackled with fully convolutional neural networks which produce dense segmentation masks. These models are often trained with loss functions such as cross-entropy or Dice, which assume pixels to be independent of each other, thus ignoring topological errors and anatomical inconsistencies. We address this limitation by moving from pixel-level to graph representations, which allow to naturally incorporate anatomical constraints by construction. To this end, we introduce HybridGNet, an encoder-decoder neural archit

A look at actions: direct gaze modulates functional connectivity of the right TPJ with an action control network.

Social signals such as eye contact and motor actions are essential elements of social interactions. However, our knowledge about the interplay of gaze signals and the control of actions remains limited. In a group of 30 healthy participants, we investigated the effect of gaze (direct gaze vs averted) on behavioral and neural measures of action control as assessed by a spatial congruency task (spatially congruent vs incongruent button presses in response to gaze shifts). Behavioral results demonstrate that inter-individual differences in condition-specific incongruency costs were associated wit

Evaluation of Novel EMG Biofeedback for Postural Correction During Computer Use.

Postural correction is an effective rehabilitation technique used to treat chronic neck and shoulder pain, and is aimed toward reducing the load on the surrounding muscles by adopting a neutral posture. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of real-time high-density surface EMG (HDsEMG) biofeedback for postural correction during typing. Twenty healthy participants performed a typing task with two forms of postural feedback: (1) verbal postural coaching and (2) verbal postural coaching plus HDsEMG biofeedback. The interface used activity from two HDsEMG arrays pl

Single-shot on-chip measurement of the modal Stokes parameters.

Integrated photonics has recently facilitated the manipulation of multimode partially coherent light in a compact mesh of Mach-Zehnder interferometers. A critical task in this context is on-chip reconstruction of the coherence matrix through a sequence of measurement configurations, thus giving rise to a speed bottleneck stemming from temporal delays in tuning on-chip phase shifts. Here, we demonstrate single-shot reconstruction of the coherence matrix for two-mode partially coherent light by parallelizing the on-chip measurements of the modal Stokes parameters, thereby exchanging space for ti

Flexible molecular chameleons: structural adaptability and therapeutic applications.

There has been a growing focus on 'molecular chameleons' possessing structural flexibility; compounds that can dynamically adjust their conformations depending on the characteristics of the medium to either conceal or reveal polar parts in aqueous/lipidic environments. Drug discovery has shifted in the past few decades toward more complex molecules, such as cyclic and macrocyclic peptides, as well as PROteolysis-TArgeting Chimeras (PROTACs). These large macromolecules are intended to balance cell permeability, aqueous solubility, and strong target binding capacity for effective pharmacokinetic

Disjunction acquisition in Mandarin Chinese: A developmental trajectory from conjunction to inclusive and exclusive.

The present study investigated the developmental trajectory of Mandarin disjunction huò 'or' comprehension in Chinese children aged 3 to 12 using a Truth Value Judgment Task. Previous studies have presented conflicting arguments regarding how children comprehend disjunction, with some proposing a conjunctive interpretation and others an inclusive one. Our results indicate that younger children predominantly interpret huò conjunctively, and children's comprehension may shift from conjunction to exclusive interpretation and then to inclusive interpretation, while adults interpret huò inclusively

Momentum-Based Balance Control of a Lower-Limb Exoskeleton During Stance.

In this work, we present the implementation of a momentum-based balance controller in a lower-limb exoskeleton that can successfully reject perturbations and self-balance without any external aid. This controller is able to withstand pushes in the order of 30 N in forward and sideways directions with little sway. Additionally, with this controller, the system can perform balanced weight-shifting motions without the need for an explicit joint reference trajectory. There is potential, with fine parameter tuning, for a more robust balance performance that can reject stronger pushes during the pre

Cortical recordings reveal hidden early signs of recovery following traumatic brain injury: A case report.

Prognosticating recovery of consciousness after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a difficult task. Understanding the mechanism of recovery of consciousness in these patients will undoubtedly help clarify this issue. Recent research has underscored the importance of electrophysiological data in characterizing the state of the brain during this period of unconsciousness. Here, we investigated cortical electrophysiological recordings from a single TBI patient and discovered that high-frequency activity associated with the return of consciousness reappeared in a spatiotemporal fashion. We ob
