Visual memory-deficit amnesia: a distinct amnesic presentation and etiology.

We describe a form of amnesia, which we have called visual memory-deficit amnesia, that is caused by damage to areas of the visual system that store visual information. Because it is caused by a deficit in access to stored visual material and not by an impaired ability to encode or retrieve new material, it has the otherwise infrequent properties of a more severe retrograde than anterograde amnesia with no temporal gradient in the retrograde amnesia. Of the 11 cases of long-term visual memory loss found in the literature, all had amnesia extending beyond a loss of visual memory, often includin

Effects of lorazepam on the distribution of spatial attention.

Reaction time (RT) to stimulus events was assessed for 2 tasks with different spatial attention demands before and after receiving either a placebo or lorazepam (1 mg). In 1 task (onset), 12 participants responded to the onset of 1 of 5 potential dot targets contained within either a small or large area. In the other task (offset), all 5 targets were illuminated and 12 participants responded to the offset of 1 of them. In the onset task, lorazepam slowed RT equally for both the large and small display areas. In the offset task, substantial impairment was found with the large but not the small

The effects of Benadryl and Hismanal on psychomotor performance and perceived performance.

Classic antihistamines (H1 antagonists) have sedative effects and can impair psychomotor performance. It is claimed that Hismanal (astemizole) does not possess central nervous system side effects. A three-factor, repeated measures, double-blind design was used to compare the effects of single oral doses of (1) Benadryl (diphenhydramine)-50 mg, (2) Hismanal-10 mg, and (3) placebo on a battery of 11 cognitive information-processing tasks and performance ratings in 28 healthy men. Performance decrements were seen at 1 h post-Benadryl ingestion on Following Directions (p < 0.05), at 1.5 h on Unsta

Modulation threshold functions for chronically impaired Menière patients.

Detection thresholds for sinusoidally amplitude-modulated broad-band noise were measured as a function of modulation frequency for both ears of 6 chronic Menière patients who suffered unilateral hearing impairments. Modulation thresholds were measured with an adaptive cued-standard forced-choice psychophysical method. Better-ear modulation thresholds were similar to normative data previously reported [Formby, C.: J. acoust. Soc.Am. 78:70-77, 1985], whereas 5 of the 6 patients exhibited deficits in modulation detection with their poorer ears. Modulation thresholds averaged across the patients'

Thresholds for the detection of the direction of whole-body, linear movement in the horizontal plane.

Thresholds for the detection (at p = 0.67 correct) of the direction of discrete linear movements in the horizontal plane, having a cosine bell velocity trajectory and duration of 3 s, were determined in 24 subjects. Thresholds in the Z body axis (mean 0.154 m X s-2) were significantly higher than thresholds for movement in the X (mean 0.063 m X s-2) and Y (mean 0.057 m X s-2) body axes. In 8 subjects, X axis acceleration threshold was found to increase as a monotonic function of stimulus duration over the range 0.98 to 6.96 s and exhibited similar frequency-dependent characteristics to thresho

Polydipsia's contribution to temporal discrimination of rats on a fixed interval schedule.

This experiment concerned the contribution of polydipsia on the temporal discrimination of rats during a fixed-interval 60-sec. schedule. In this study, the timing accuracy of 12 rats which had access to water during training was compared to that of 12 rats which had no water during training. The rats were trained for 25 sessions on an FI 60-sec. schedule. In early sessions before polydipsia was fully developed, no differences existed between the timing accuracy of the water group and no-water group. As the amount of water drunk by the water group increased as the number of sessions increased,

Effect of similarity of surround on target-letter processing.

Embedding a target letter in a similar surround slowed its processing in both a distortion-detection task and an identification task. If the target was not merely similar but also identical to the surround, however, it was processed more rapidly. The present results favor a two-factor (bias, discriminability) model similar to that of Estes (1982), who also found that performance varied nonmonotonically with changes in target--surround similarity. As similarity increases, performance steadily declines because of reduced discriminability but when improves when the surround becomes identical to t

Loudness perception for short-duration tones in masking noise.

The effect of masking noise on the temporal summation of loudness is investigated here by performing loudness balances between a standard 500-msec tone burst (1000 Hz at either 20-, 50-, or 80-dB SPL) and either masked or unmasked comparison tone bursts (1000 Hz with durations between 10 and 640 msec). In all but two instances, the obtained functions relating SPL for equal loudness to stimulus duration could be plotted as two line segments that met to form a knee. The slopes of the line segments at durations less than the kneepoints are altered by the masking noise, becoming less steep with in

[Post-traumatic disease-language. Geneaological analysis and time structure].

A part from head traumas all physical injuries, slight though they can be, can turn out to be the starting-points of neurotic syndrome of intolerance. The traumatic shock in the temporal meaning of the word (temporal event), more than the trauma itself, has disturbing and disynchronizing effects which are pathogenic. The post-accidental traumatic syndrome develops from the effects achieved by the temporal event. Such effects are supported afterwards by the creative psychopathological expression. The creative expression is structured into a speech-disturbance through a twofold account, 1) an ac

Motivational effects of hunger on time estimation and delay of gratification in obese and nonobese boys.

Time estimates and ability to delay gratification of obese and nonobese boys were compared by a 2x2x2 factorial experiment in which hunger and edibility of incentives were manipulated. Hunger did not affect estimates of the obese boys, while it significantly shortened estimates made by the nonobese boys when the hunger drive was made either specific or nonspecific by varying incentive conditions. Although estimates of the nonobese boys were significantly shorter in the edible than nonedible incentive condition, edibility of incentives did not affect the estiamtes of the obese, suggesting a gen

Entering the new normal - psychosocial work environment and health during the transition from full remote to a hybrid work arrangement in a higher education context.

This longitudinal study explored the perceptions of psychosocial work factors, work-related health, and job satisfaction of 745 professional service staff, working in a higher education setting in Sweden, during the transition from full remote work to a hybrid work arrangement over 12-months. The study also explored whether these perceptions differed due to gender and household composition. The questionnaire data were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models with estimated marginal means and Bonferroni-adjusted pairwise comparisons. The results showed that while overall perceptions of psycho

Industry Interactions at Medical Conferences: Representatives' Credentials and the Disclosure of Data Limitations Influence Clinician Perceptions.

PURPOSE: Exhibit hall booths at medical conferences are a key avenue for promoting prescription drugs to health care providers (HCPs). Because HCPs spend considerable time interacting with industry representatives at conferences, we explored how representatives' credentials might influence HCP perceptions and prescribing intentions of promoted drugs. We also examined how disclosures of clinical trial data limitations about these drugs during conference interactions might influence HCP perceptions and intentions. METHODS: We conducted a 2 × 2 factorial experimental study with HCPs (n = 430) du

"Everyone Saw Me Differently Like It Was My Fault or I Wanted It": Acquaintance Stalking Victim Experiences of Sexual Assault, Sexual Harassment, and Sexual Autonomy.

Although the stalking research literature has grown over time, there is more limited research focused on acquaintance stalking victim experiences and harms. The current study used online surveys with women stalked by acquaintances who had (n = 193), and who had not (n = 144), been sexually assaulted by the stalker to examine differences in stalking course of conduct (including jealousy and control, sexual harassment) and victim harms (resource losses, social identity perceptions, sexual autonomy, sexual difficulties, and safety efficacy). Results found that many of the acquaintance stalking vi

tACS phase-specifically biases brightness perception of flickering light.

BACKGROUND: Visual phenomena like brightness illusions impressively demonstrate the highly constructive nature of perception. In addition to physical illumination, the subjective experience of brightness is related to temporal neural dynamics in visual cortex. OBJECTIVE: Here, we asked whether biasing the temporal pattern of neural excitability in visual cortex by transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) modulates brightness perception of concurrent rhythmic visual stimuli. METHODS: Participants performed a brightness discrimination task of two flickering lights, one of which was

Raccoon-paw-inspired porous hydrogel electronic skin for self-powered fused perception.

Wearable gel electronics require soft material platforms capable of supporting autonomous tactile sensing and physiological monitoring within a compact system. Here, we report a raccoon-paw-inspired porous hydrogel electronic skin for self-powered slip perception and artificial sweat fingerprint recognition. A sacrificial sucrose-template strategy was used to construct an interconnected porous hydrogel network with low volume density, high compressibility, rapid liquid uptake, and continuous ionic transport. After loading with the [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- redox couple, the hydrogel generates a thermogal

Bioinspired Cross-Modal Self-Adaptive Machine Intelligence for Event-Driven and Ultrahigh-Precision Underwater Grasping.

Embodied intelligent agents, which represent the future of robotics, demand precise perception and real-time decision-making capabilities to achieve natural environmental interactions. However current systems face inherent limitations in unimodal sensing and cross-modal coordination, which hinder their performance in dynamic contact-rich operations. Herein, we present a fabric-based event-driven tactile interface that features an innovative woven structure with cross-fiber electrodes. It achieves breakthroughs in sensitivity (246.3 kPa-1), pressure detection (>450 kPa), and waterproof robustne

From Early Behavioral Intervention to School: A Systematic Evaluation of Parents' Perspectives on the Quality of the Autism Services During the Transition to Kindergarten.

Research emphasizes the importance of seamless transitions from Early Behavioral Intervention (EBI) to school-based services, but formal support during this critical period remains limited, leading to decreased parental satisfaction with autism services. This study aimed to systematically document parents' perception of the quality of services received during the transition from EBI to kindergarten, along with the predictors of this perception. The study adopted a prospective longitudinal design and relied on a validated evaluation framework, the Evaluation of the Trajectory in Autism for Pare
