Immediate, single stage, truly anatomic zirconia implant in lower molar replacement: a case report with 2.5 years follow-up.

This report demonstrates the clinical use of a modified, truly anatomic, root-analogue zirconia implant for immediate replacement of a two-rooted, left first mandibular molar. A 50-year-old female patient with chronic apical periodontitis of the left mandibulary first molar was referred and the tooth was extracted. The mesial root had to be removed surgically due to a root fracture. A truly anatomical, root identical, roughened zirconia implant modified by macro-retentions was manufactured and placed into the extraction socket by tapping 7 days later. After 4 months a composite crown was cemen

Root amputation: a new look into an old procedure.

A treatment option for managing furcation invasions is root amputation. Long-term survival of resected molars requires a complete harmony of sequential endodontic, periodontic, restorative and maintenance procedures. The main objective of this article is to provide a concise historical perspective of this procedure and to review available literature regarding its efficacy and limitations. It also illustrates a current modification of the procedure using guided bone regeneration (GBR) and socket preservation to eliminate some of the potential disadvantages of the traditional root amputation pro

Bending moments of PEEK-based root analog implants (RAIs).

Root-analog implants are frequently fabricated from titanium, which can be associated with various problems, e.g. hypersensitivity to titanium. In this study, we evaluate the bending moments of different polyetheretherketone-based root analog implants as a metal-free alternative. For this, an extracted tooth 31 and 36 was scanned to create an STL data set of each tooth. These were used to fabricate n = 8 polyetheretherketone-based root analog implants per group, with 5 groups being fabricated per tooth type. Two groups were additively manufactured using material extrusion. The other groups wer

Observation periods before tooth movement in orthodontic patients who have experienced mild-to-moderate dental trauma: a scoping review of current evidence.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines for orthodontic patients that have experienced mild-to-moderate dental trauma recommend an observation period before beginning or resuming tooth movement, but they appear to be based on limited evidence. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review examines available research on recommended observation periods before beginning or resuming tooth movement for orthodontic patients that have experienced mild-to-moderate dental trauma. The extent of research, methodologies used, outcomes reported, and justification for recommended observation periods were reviewed to identify any gaps in

Flexibility of feeding movements in pigs: effects of changes in food toughness and stiffness on the timing of jaw movements.

In mammals, chewing movements can be modified, or flexible, in response to changes in food properties. Variability between and within food in the temporal characteristics of chewing movements can impact chewing frequency and rhythmicity, which in turn may affect food breakdown, energy expenditure and tooth wear. Here, we compared total chewing cycle duration and intra-cycle phase durations in pigs chewing on three foods varying in toughness and stiffness: apples (low toughness, low stiffness), carrots (high toughness, low stiffness), and almonds (high toughness, high stiffness). We also determ

Complications using intermaxillary fixation screws.

PURPOSE: The most important part of facial bone fracture treatment is immobilization. Bandaging of the fractured mandible was the first immobilization device used in ancient Greece. Since then, various methods with different shapes and uses were introduced in the treatment of maxillofacial trauma patients. Intermaxillary fixation (IMF) with bone screws was first used in 1981. This technique has advantages, including quickness, ease of use, less trauma, and reduced risk of needle-stick injury. We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of this technique. METHODS AND MATERIALS: In a retrospect

Mutations in COL1A1/A2 and CREB3L1 are associated with oligodontia in osteogenesis imperfecta.

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heterogeneous connective tissue disorder characterized by an increased tendency for fractures throughout life. Autosomal dominant (AD) mutations in COL1A1 and COL1A2 are causative in approximately 85% of cases. In recent years, recessive variants in genes involved in collagen processing have been found. Hypodontia (< 6 missing permanent teeth) and oligodontia (≥ 6 missing permanent teeth) have previously been reported in individuals with OI. The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to investigate whether children and adolescents with OI and

Spectrophotometric analysis of crown discoloration following the use of silver nanoparticles combined with calcium hydroxide as intracanal medicament.

BACKGROUND: Optimal antibacterial efficacy of intracanal medicaments containing silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) has been well documented. However, concerns remain regarding the effect of Ag-NPs on tooth color. This study aimed to assess the effects of calcium hydroxide (CH) mixed with Ag-NPs as intracanal medicaments on tooth color. The effect of location of application of medicament on the degree of discoloration was evaluated as well. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty extracted single-rooted, single-canal human teeth with straight roots, no caries, no cracks or fractures were collected and accessed

On the evolution of the morphology and resilience of molar cusps in fossil hominid teeth.

Teeth play an important role in evolutionary studies due to their good preservation and direct link to diet. The present work makes use of a previously generated database on molar teeth of fossil hominids which consists of cuspal enamel thickness dc, dentin horn angle φ and section width D, all measured on a given histological tooth section. These data are here interpreted with the aid of "fracture stress" QF = PF/D2 and geological age t, where PF is the occlusal force needed to cause cusp failure as determined from dc and φ. QF is virtually a constant in non-hominins ("apes") while monotonica

Conservative Composite Resin Restoration for Proximal Caries - Two Case Reports.

The paradigms of contemporary caries management have shifted to minimal intervention dentistry. Conservative restorative procedures are recommended to replace the complete removal of all carious tissues in the management of dental caries. This article reports two clinical cases of conservative restorations of proximal caries. Different conservative cavity designs and restorative techniques were performed in the two cases. Proximal caries in posterior teeth were prepared using the box-only preparation technique or the proximal tunnel preparation technique. The cavities were restored directly wi

Dens evaginatus: literature review, pathophysiology, and comprehensive treatment regimen.

Dens evaginatus (DE) is an uncommon dental anomaly, having been well documented since 1925. It occurs primarily in people of Asian descent and is exhibited by protrusion of a tubercle from occlusal surfaces of posterior teeth, and lingual surfaces of anterior teeth. Tubercles have an enamel layer covering a dentin core containing a thin extension of pulp. These cusp-like protrusions are susceptible to pulp exposure from wear or fracture because of malocclusion, leading to pulpal complications soon after eruption. Endodontic intervention of permanent teeth with immature roots is unpredic for in

Application of cone beam volumetric tomography in endodontics.

In a 2008 article on cone beam volumetric tomography (CBVT) and dentoalveolar applications, Tyndall and Rathore wrote: 'It is in the area of endodontic applications that the literature has proved most fruitful to date.' This statement is even truer today than in 2008. A review of the literature has demonstrated that, in many cases, CBVT is more efficacious than traditional forms of 2-D imaging. Endodontic applications of CBVT include the diagnosis of periapical lesions due to pulpal inflammation, identification and localization of internal and external resorption, the detection of vertical roo
