Oral Health and Drug Use Among People Experiencing Homelessness: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: The health vulnerability that homeless individuals encounter, in which poor nutrition, irregular hygiene behaviours, social exclusion, and limited access to preventive dental care converge with high rates of substance use, is a major factor in the acceleration of oral disease progression. Xerostomia, bruxism, poor diet, delayed care-seeking, and trauma are other ways that drug use exacerbates oral health issues, but the extent to which these interactions occur in the homeless population is not well quantified in low- and middle-income countries. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study

Lotus-Leaf-Inspired Surface-Fluorinated Indium Oxide Nanomastoid for Humidity-Resistant Hydrogen Sulfide Detection in Exhaled Breath.

Non-invasive breath testing has emerged as a promising technique for real-time disease monitoring and early intervention. In the oral cavity, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is predominantly generated through the metabolic degradation of sulfur-containing amino acids by Gram-negative anaerobic and Gram-positive bacterial communities. Precise quantification of exhaled H2S concentrations enables effective diagnosis of oral diseases, providing critical insights for clinical treatment strategies. However, the complex gas composition and high humidity of exhaled breath pose significant challenges for trace

Cross-sectional associations between vitamin D status and periodontitis in adults in Northern Norway: The Tromsø Study 2015-2016.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D is involved in the immune system by regulating inflammatory processes. Over the recent decades, there has been an increase in studies investigating the potential influence of vitamin D status on inflammatory diseases and conditions. However, research on the link between vitamin D and periodontitis remains scarce. Hence, we aimed to examine the relationship between serum 25(OH)D levels and periodontitis in an adult population in Northern Norway. METHODS: The study was based on cross-sectional data from a population-based study: the seventh Tromsø study, conducted in 2015

Caregiver, community health worker, and dentist feedback on a behavioral intervention for caregivers of children with severe early childhood caries.

INTRODUCTION: Severe early childhood caries (S-ECC) is a common disease within marginalized pediatric populations. S-ECC is often treated under general anesthesia to facilitate extensive treatment in young children, but treatment does not address etiology of an infectious disease that is rooted in health behaviors. Without behavior changes related to toothbrushing and sugar consumption, many children experience recurrent disease and some require subsequent surgeries. To improve post-surgery oral health, we developed PROTECT (Preventing Recurrent Operations Targeting Early Childhood Caries Trea

Evaluating the impact of oral hygiene instruction and digital oral health education within cardiac rehabilitation clinics: A protocol for a novel, dual centre, parallel randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Diseases of the periodontal tissues including gingivitis and periodontitis can affect up to 90% and 50% of the population respectively. These conditions are multifactorial inflammatory conditions involving a dysbiotic biofilm that, if left untreated, can lead to the destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth and have significant systemic implications, specifically on cardiovascular health. The elevation of inflammatory markers, particularly high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), are strongly associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis, a key risk factor fo

Influence of the dental topical application of a nisin-biogel in the oral microbiome of dogs: a pilot study.

Periodontal disease (PD) is one of the most widespread inflammatory diseases in dogs. This disease is initiated by a polymicrobial biofilm in the teeth surface (dental plaque), leading to a local inflammatory response, with gingivitis and/or several degrees of periodontitis. For instance, the prevention of bacterial dental plaque formation and its removal are essential steps in PD control. Recent research revealed that the antimicrobial peptide nisin incorporated in the delivery system guar gum (biogel) can inhibit and eradicate bacteria from canine dental plaque, being a promising compound fo

Foreign Body Wharton's Duct.

BACKGROUND: Parental supervised brushing (PSB) when initiated in infancy can lead to long-term protective home-based oral health habits thereby reducing the risk of dental caries. However, PSB is a complex behaviour with many barriers reported by parents hindering its effective implementation. Within the UK, oral health advice is delivered universally to parents by health visitors and their wider teams when children are aged between 9 and 12 months. Nevertheless, there is no standardised intervention or training upon which health visitors can base this advice, and they often lack the specialis
