Tuberculosis is a mycobacterial infection that can affect the lungs as well as other organs. The involvement of the spine, although rare, can have major consequences if not diagnosed and treated in a timely and effective manner, such as residual deformities and neurological deficits. On occasion, the atypical presentation of tuberculous spondylitis may cause a delay in treatment and therefore lead to less favorable outcomes. In this article, we present a rare case of progressed tuberculous infection involving the respiratory and musculoskeletal system in a 36-year-old patient whose main compla

Tuberculous, fungal, and parasitic infections infect millions of people throughout the world. While other problems usually overshadow their rheumatologic manifestations, nearly all these infections can involve bone or joints and may on occasion present with rheumatologic symptoms. The classic model of these diseases presenting as chronic monoarticular arthritis is still generally valid but other presentations, such as tenosynovitis with atypical mycobacterial infections, erythema nodosum with leprosy, coccidioidomycosis and histoplasmosis, and reactive arthritis with schistosomiasis and helmin

A patient is described whose disease caused difficulty in diagnosis and indicated that neurological tuberculosis, like other extrapulmonary forms of this disease, may be associated with little or no evidence of pulmonary involvement. In a population where tuberculosis is common, antituberculosis drugs should be considered for any patient with undiagnosed illness--especially of the central nervous system--pending investigation. A search of the English-language literature did not reveal a similar report.

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of 11 cases.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of anterior cervical and retropharyngeal debridement combined with posterior occipital-cervical fusion in treatment of upper cervical spinal tuberculosis.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The anterior approach simply could not provide strong fixation whereas the posterior treatment could not clear up the lesions completely. The method combining anterior and posterior approaches to treat the upper cervical tuberculosis is advisable.
METHODS: The clinical data of 11 patients with u

Tuberculosis (TBC) continues to be a major health problem. Between January 1, 1980, and April 30, 1986, 211 children and adolescents presented with a positive tuberculin reaction or symptoms suggestive of tuberculosis. Active disease occurred in 35 (17%); 29 of these had primary infection, whereas 4 adolescents presented with cavitary pulmonary disease and 1 infant each had Pott's disease and cervical adenitis. The proportion of patients with active disease was greater in infants and toddlers; 2 of whom also had meningitis. Two children with active disease were infected with human immunodefici

We here report the case of a 76-year old patient admitted to Pulmonology Department with tuberculous spondylodiscitis diagnosed on the basis of clinical signs including weight loss, prolonged fever and stabbing lumbar pain occurred 2 months before. The diagnosis was confirmed by lumbar CT scan and by Genexpert TB test on lumbar fluid taken from the abnormal L1 vertebral body, which showed mycobacterium tuberculosis. Three weeks after the beginning of treatment the patient had motor deficit in lower limbs followed by sensory deficit. These abnormalities were confirmed by MRI which showed abnorm

PURPOSE: To report the treatment response of a case of tubercular choroidal granuloma and subretinal abscess with intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) and moxifloxacin.
METHOD: Retrospective interventional case report.
RESULTS: A 34-year-old man presented with bilateral choroidal granuloma and subretinal abscess in one eye. He was a known case of spinal tuberculosis and was on anti-tubercular therapy. Patient was successfully treated with intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF and moxifloxacin.
CONCLUSION: Intravitreal anti-VEGF and moxifloxacin combination may be b

As a young surgeon in the early 1950s, I trained in various orthopaedic units. Much of the work was concerned with children and young adults suffering from two devastating diseases: tuberculosis and poliomyelitis. These were to vanish almost entirely from our hospitals soon afterwards, thanks to Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), antibiotics and the polio vaccines. However, the dedicated nursing that long term orthopaedic patients of today still require--those with congenital deformities, spinal injuries, multiple traumas and so on--owes much to the teaching of Agnes Hunt, pioneer of orthopaedic

A male Sikh presented with spontaneous neck pain. Plain cervical radiography showed gross atlantoaxial subluxation (AAS). Computed tomography showed soft tissue anterior to a subluxed odontoid peg. A diagnosis of atlantoaxial tuberculosis was considered. Confirmation of this would have required a trans-oral anterior cervical biopsy. Despite the paucity of other rheumatic symptoms a diagnosis of Reiter's syndrome with spondylitis was made, and the only surgical procedure required was posterior fusion of C1 and C2, with resultant spinal stability and pain relief. This is the first report of Reit

OBJECTIVES: Spontaneous spinal infection (SI) is a quite rare but serious entity. This study aimed to evaluate outcome and follow-up data of SI cases without a microbiological diagnosis (suspected SI).
METHODS: We undertook a retrospective, comparative study of 82 spontaneous SI cases in adults presenting over an 11-year period to two Italian hospitals.
RESULTS: The diagnostic yields of blood culture, percutaneous needle biopsy of spine, and surgical sample culture were 43.6%, 72.7%, and 91.6%, respectively. Overall, causative organisms were identified in 60 (73.2%) cases, the most frequentl
