Mass spectrometric study of stone matrix proteins of human bladder stones.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the mechanisms of bladder uric acid stone (BUAS) formation by analyzing BUAS stone matrix proteins, with mass spectrometry (MS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Stone matrix proteins were extracted from 5 pure BUASs. The obtained proteins were analyzed with reverse phase liquid chromatography-tandem MS. The acquired data were investigated against a Swiss Prot human protein database, using Matrix Science Mascot. The identified proteins were submitted to UniProtKB website for gene ontology analysis to define their correlation. They were also submitted to Metacore platform and Kyot

Primary parathyroid gland hyperplasia in dogs: six cases (1982-1991).

Persistent hypercalcemia attributable to parathyroid gland hyperplasia was identified in 6 dogs with primary hyperparathyroidism. Clinical signs included polydipsia (n = 4), polyuria (n = 4), and signs caused by cystic calculi (n = 3). Abnormal clinical pathologic findings included hypercalcemia (mean, 13.6 mg/dl; range, 12.6 to 14.7 mg/dl; n = 6), hypophosphatemia (mean, 2.2 mg/dl; range, 1.4 to 2.9 mg/dl; n = 6), high serum alkaline phosphatase activity (mean, 222 IU/L; range, 161 to 286 IU/L; n = 3), and isosthenuria (mean, 1.012; range, 1.006 to 1.017; n = 6). Serum parathyroid hormone con

Increased serum alkaline phosphatase activity: a possible indicator of renal damage.

Increased levels of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (E.C.3.1.3.1.) were observed in 25 patients with various urological conditions involving the kidneys: malignancy, complicated nephrolithiasis, and surgical and percutaneous manipulations. Other possible sources for increased ALP level, mainly hepatic and osseous, were excluded by history, laboratory tests, and liver and bone imaging. Studies of isoenzymes of ALP did not show a distinctive pattern. ALP levels returned to the normal range by treating the underlying lesions involving the kidney: nephrectomy, complete removal of stones, or remov

[Conservative endoscopic treatment of urothelial cystic dysplasia of the upper urinary tract].

We highlight the importance of the new diagnostic possibilities afforded by ureterorenoscopy and nephroscopy in the differential diagnosis of single or multiple cystic dysplasia of the upper excretory tract. Moreover, endoscopic treatment was performed in the two cases reported herein. In the first case the biopsy procedure was also therapeutic and in the second case cyst removal resolved the ureteral obstruction. Because the disease is detected infrequently and because treatment may be required even less frequently, several technical solutions have been applied to assess efficacy and reliabil

Heterotopic pancreatic tissue associated with type 1 choledochal cyst, cystolithiasis and gall bladder stones: a rare entity with review of literature.

Choledochal cyst is a rare congenital malformation, particularly when associated with stones in cyst (cystolithiasis), gallstones and heterotopic pancreatic tissue within the cyst wall. The current case represents a 5-year-old boy with abdominal pain, pale colored stools, and jaundice. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography showed a cystic lesion, arising from common bile duct with cystolithiasis and cholelithiasis. He underwent excision of choledochal cyst and gallbladder with Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy. Microscopic examination showed a cyst wall composed of fibrocollagenous tissue li

[Calculi in a blindly ending ureteric bud - an unusual cause for an overactive bladder syndrome and dyspareunia].

The current case report describes a blindly ending ureteric bud filled with calculi as a cause for an overactive bladder syndrome and dyspareunia which was therapy-resistant for 5 years. The symptoms could be solved by an interdisciplinary collaboration of urologists and gynaecologists in a pelvic floor centre. A transurethral resection of the ureteric bud with removal of the calculi was performed. This case report confirms the need of extensive diagnostic measures if an overactive bladder syndrome presents as therapy-resistant.

[Modified technique for transurethral resection of the prostate with suprapubic drainage and local anesthesia].

PURPOSE: To establish a technique for transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), combining the use of local anaesthesia with an Amplatz suprapubic tube, in patients at high surgical risk. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A study was carried out in 32 patients who underwent TURP with a 30 F Amplatz suprapubic tube following local anaesthesia. This technique was indicated where surgery presented a general risk, in elderly patients, and for patients refusing to undergo spinal intradural or general anaesthesia. The mean age of the patients was 70 years (61-82 years). The risk of surgery was assessed ac

A mouse model for cystinuria type I.

Cystinuria, one of the most common inborn errors of metabolism in humans, accounts for 1-2% of all cases of renal lithiasis. It is caused by defects in the heterodimeric transporter system rBAT/b0,+AT, which lead to reduced reabsorption of cystine and dibasic amino acids through the epithelial cells of the renal tubules and the intestine. In an N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea mutagenesis screen for recessive mutations we identified a mutant mouse with elevated concentrations of lysine, arginine and ornithine in urine, displaying the clinical syndrome of urolithiasis and its complications. Melamine-related urinary stones in 195 infants and young children: clinical features within 2 years of follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the clinical features and follow-up, the effects of melamine-tainted milk powder (MMP) consumption on kidney and body growth in children who suffered from melamine-related urinary stones (MUS) 2 years earlier were checked. MEASUREMENTS: Body height and weight, kidney and bladder morphology monitored by ultrasound, urinalysis and renal function were recorded. Plain abdominal radiography was performed for differential diagnosis. The first follow-up was carried out at 15 months and the second 2 years later for patients who showed any abnormality at the first follow-up. Tw

[Two cases of encrusted cystitis].

Encrusted cystitis is a type of severe cystitis, which progresses chronically and is characterized by excessively alkaline urine and calcifications within the bladder wall. We report two cases of encrusted cystitis. Both cases were high aged and had severe anemia with chronic cystitis. They complained of gross hematuria, voiding frequency and pain upon urination. Urine pH was 8-9, and urine cytology was negative. Urine culture contained Corynebacterium Group D2. Abdominal computed tomography and transurethral resection revealed wall bladder wall calcification and inflammatory change. We diagno
