Since a surgical nephrostomy is not satisfying as either a temporary or permanent means of urinary diversion and puts a heavy burden on the patient as well, the percutaneous nephrostomy is gaining significance. Broad application of ultrasonically or radiologically controlled punctures of the renal pelvis have been til now limited due to the lack of a one-time system which is easy to manipulate. A new puncture system was thus developed with which a percutaneous nephrostomy can be performed with an up to 14 FU catheter drainage in a taechnically simple fashion. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the outcome and complications of urinary and faecal continent catheterizable stomas.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective record review of all patients operated on in our institution within the last 6 years.
RESULTS: Fifty-five children received 63 stomas. The mean age at operation was 9.2 years and the mean follow-up period was 2.8 years. The diagnoses were: neurogenic bladder (n=22), bladder or cloacal exstrophy (n=20), anorectal malformation (n=6), persistent cloaca (n=3), Hirschsprung's disease (n=2), posterior urethral valves (n=1) and prune belly syndrome (n=1).

Emphysematous cystitis is a complicated form of urinary tract infection, characterized by the presence of air inside the wall and in the light of the bladder, affecting more diabetics, elderly and immunosuppressed. The microorganisms that most frequently cause this entity are Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Its treatment is based on broad-spectrum antibiotics, bladder catheterization and partial or total cystectomy in severe cases.

Permanent bladder catheterization for medical or social reasons increases the risk of complications, especially urinary infection. We evaluated the usefulness of the balloon catheter with a steerable intravesical tip in reducing the volume of residual urine between the bladder neck and the balloon of the conventional Foley catheter. The results show that this new catheter affords no additional advantage over the conventional catheter.

The authors stress the importance of sphincter disorders especially bladder, in these patients. These disorders may compromise the vital prognosis. An accurate neuro-urological work-up is absolutely necessary. It will guide the functional rehabilitation. Which, as a rule, will improve the patients' comfort and prevent the occurrence of urinary complications, with the use, as in the case reported, of non-sterile intermittent self-catheterization.

Four foals were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit in the first 2 days of life with problems related to birth hypoxia (neonatal maladjustment syndrome, renal failure, necrotizing enterocolitis) and sepsis.
