The present status of the use of electrical pacing to treat tachyarrythmias is reviewed. The pathogenesis of arrythmia formation, methods of pacing, response of specific tachyarrhythmias to pacing and the clinical application of pacing to terminate and suppress tachyarrhythmias are delineated.

BACKGROUND: Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is common in surgical patients with congenital heart disease. Ablation and maze operations have been shown to be effective in treating SVT, but these procedures can be complex and time-consuming because of variable anatomy and a thickened right atrium.
