The aim was to investigate whether the use of infra-red thermography (I-R) and measurement of temperature gradients along the finger could improve the diagnostic accuracy of cold-provocation testing (15 degrees C for 5 min) in vascular hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Twenty-one controls and 33 individuals with stages 2/3V HAVS were studied. The standard measurement of time to rewarm by 4 degrees C (T4 degrees C) and temperature gradients between the finger tip, base and middle (measured using I-R) were calculated. Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) analysis to distinguish between the…

OBJECTIVES: A three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of the lumbar spine L3-L5 segment, the ligaments of which were assumed to be nonlinear materials, was established based on the actual vertebra geometry to investigate the influence of the injury lumbar spine on its adjacent components on the condition of whole-body vibration. Several injury conditions of the spine components were assumed, such as facetectomy, nucleotomy, and removal of bony posterior elements.
METHODS: The dynamic FE analyses were carried out for those FE conditions under cyclic compression loads at the frequencies of …

Voiced sounds were simulated with a computer model of the vocal fold composed of a single mass vibrating both parallel and perpendicular to … lations with an inductive load and a capacitive load of the vocal tract with no sudden jumps in the vibration frequency. Self-excitation is possible both below and above the first formant frequency of the vocal tract. By taking advantage of the wider continuous frequency range, the two-dimensional model can successfully be applied to the sound synthesis of …

Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) is caused by prolonged exposure to vibration. The diagnosis and assessment of disease severity are subjective at present. The aim of this study was to determine sensorineural dysfunction in patients with HAVS using two methods of aesthesiometric assessment. We recruited three groups of age-matched subjects: 20 subjects diagnosed as having HAVS, 15 manual workers and 15 sedentary workers. We measured both two-point discrimination and depth sense perception using an aesthesiometer. We found that the two-point discrimination wheel was more accurate than the dept…

Part I of this paper presents an overview of the medical aspects of the hand-arm vibration syndrome, as well as the relationship between occupational exposure to hand-transmitted vibration and the vascular, neurological, and musculoskeletal disorders occurring in the upper limbs of workers who use vibrating tools. There is epidemiologic evidence for an increased occurrence of peripheral sensorineural and vascular disorders in occupational groups using a great variety of vibrating tools. An excess risk for wrist osteoarthrosis and elbow arthrosis and osteophytosis has been reported in workers e…

BACKGROUND: Intracordal Teflon injection has been the mainstream management for unilateral vocal cord palsy over the past three decades. In recent years, some investigators concerned about its possible adverse effects on the vibration of the injected vocal cords. It is therefore necessary to clarify the clinical significance of these concerns if Teflon injection will stay as a viable treatment.
METHODS: Twenty-one patients with unilateral vocal cord palsy, who had received Teflon injection for more than one year, were evaluated by flexible laryngovideostroboscopy, basic voice function evaluat…

OBJECTIVES: To investigate changes in digital circulation during and after exposure to hand transmitted vibration. By studying two frequencies and two magnitudes of vibration, to investigate the extent to which haemodynamic changes depend on the vibration frequency, the vibration acceleration, and the vibration velocity.
METHODS: Finger skin temperature (FST), finger blood flow (FBF), and finger systolic pressure were measured in the fingers of both hands in eight healthy men. Indices of digital vasomotor tone-such as critical closing pressure and vascular resistance-were estimated by pressur…

Paresthesias are a frequently reported symptom of methylmercury exposure in adults, while peripheral neuropathy has long been known to result from high-level lead exposure. Despite this, no objective determination of somatosensory function has been performed in either humans or animals for either toxicant. Somatosensory function was assessed following developmental methylmercury exposure or lifetime lead exposure in monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) by determination of sensitivity to vibration applied to the fingertip. Vibration thresholds were determined over a number of frequencies, from 25 to 2…

Stems of 21-day dwarf Marigold plants cultivated on the clinostat were compared with plants cultivated on vertical axis rotators ("vibrational controls") and stationary controls for long-term changes in cell wall composition. Stems of 21-day plants grown under stationary conditions and subsequently exposed to the clinostat for 24 hours were also analyzed. Among the long-tern markers, calciun, lignin, and protein-bound hemicellulose (possibly cell wall glycoprotein) clearly differentiated the effects of vibration from those of the clinostat. Short-term differential responses included rate of et…

The relationship between electroencephalogram (EEG) and eye movements was studied in rabbits during optokinetic, vestibular, and optovestibular tests. EEG was recorded through permanently implanted electrodes. Exposure to noise and vibration increased the frequency and the velocity of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN). The increase was greater during vibration but greatest during combined noise and vibration. EEG activity was closely linked to changes in OKN and was particularly evident with the appearance of theta waves in the dorsal hippocampus. Also, rotation of the rabbit produced considerable a…

This paper presents an investigation of the viability of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) accelerometers and load sensors for two diagnostic tasks in robotics: vibration analysis of industrial manipulators and slip detection in robotic grippers. The study synthesizes experimental results from two independent experiments, focusing on the use of optical sensors in place of traditional electromechanical devices such as MEMS accelerometers and resistive strain gauges. The experiments were performed on an ABB industrial robot with a parallel robotic gripper equipped with embedded optical fibers. Under the…

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of LV in combination with gabapentin, a first-line medication for RLS, on the treatment of patients with the condition.
RESULTS: In total, 36 participants (18 in each group) participated in this study, with 10 (55%) being male within each group. The mean age of participants was 45 years (SD = 10.6) in the LV group and 49.1 (SD = 8.3) in the gabapentin group. In both the LV and gabapentin groups, IRLSSG scores decreased significantly after the intervention compared with baseline (p < 0.001). However, scores increased at the one-month follow-up

Neonatal transport plays a vital role in ensuring that newborns who require specialized medical care can safely access appropriate services. Standard, regionalized transport protocols and equipment are required to improve access, timeliness, and consistency to the level of care provided. A key concern in neonatal transport is the potential exposure of newborns to elevated sound and whole-body vibration from the variety of transport incubators, medical equipment, and the vehicle platforms used in practice. Although international research groups are actively pursuing strategies to mitigate harmf…

Whole-body vibration (WBV) is widely used in rehabilitation, clinical practice and sports to improve various health conditions and enhance muscle performance. However, the biomechanical mechanisms underlying these beneficial effects remain unclear. Although vibration transmission during WBV training has been investigated in standing postures, seated postures remain largely unexplored. This study investigated how three sitting postures (slouched, upright, and tense) affect vibration transmission to and through the human body during WBV exposure. Twelve healthy male participants were exposed to …
