Cobalamin (Vitamin B₁₂) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various neuropsychiatric disorders. A review of 19 patients (14 vegetarians) with demonstrable vitamin B₁₂ deficiency showed varied psychiatric symptomatology, with the majority not having significant hematological or neurological manifestations.

The Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is a condition associated with complex visual hallucinations occurring in the elderly in patients with visual impairment and normal mental health. Here, we report the case of a 78-year-old woman who has a limited visual acuity with a CBS that we postulated to be in relationship to a vitamin B12 deficiency. This case is the first report of vitamin B12 deficiency-associated CBS.

The total Hcy, methionine, vitamin B12, folic acid and vitamin B6 blood concentrations were measured in apparently healthy adult subjects aged 20-30 years with three types of nutrition - 52 normal weight subjects of general population on traditional mixed diet (non-vegetarians), 52 normal weight vegetarians and 24 overweight and obese non-vegetarians. In the groups with lower methionine intake (vegetarians, normal weight non-vegetarians; methionine intake 0.45-2.12 g/day), Hcy values are dependent on vitamin B12 and folic acid. Vegetarian Hcy concentration is significantly increased and hyperh

Three patients with vitamin B12 deficiency were studied to determine the extent of the disturbance of nerve conduction. All had small or absent sural potential and in addition all had some abnormalities of F response. Motor nerve conduction in legs was borderline or abnormal and in two patients there were some features of a mononeuritis multiplex syndrome. Abnormalities of motor conduction are thus part of the changes in vitamin B12 deficiency in addition to the involvement of the sensory nerves.

In the following article a comparative evaluation of the tests used for the causative investigation of vitamin B(12) deficiency is presented. Although Schilling test since 2003 is not available in the market, it is considered the gold standard as a functional test of vitamin B(12) absorption, as it not only has a high specificity for the diagnosis of pernicious anaemia but also examines both gastric and intestinal stage of vitamin B(12) absorption. Consequently restoration of Schilling test in the clinical setting is necessary for the etiological diagnosis of B(12) insufficiency at least until

Folate and vitamin B-12 are essential for normal brain development. Few studies have examined the relationship of maternal folate and vitamin B-12 status during pregnancy and offspring cognitive function. To test the hypothesis that lower maternal plasma folate and vitamin B-12 concentrations and higher plasma homocysteine concentrations during pregnancy are associated with poorer neurodevelopment, 536 children (aged 9-10 y) from the Mysore Parthenon birth cohort underwent cognitive function assessment during 2007-2008 using 3 core tests from the Kaufman Assessment Battery, and additional test

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B-12 is a cofactor in folate-mediated 1-carbon metabolism, which generates nucleotides {thymidylate [deoxythymidine monophosphate (dTMP)] and purines} and methionine. Depressed de novo thymidylate (dTMP) synthesis leads to uracil accumulation in DNA.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine how B-12 availability affects mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) integrity and mitochondrial function in skeletal muscle. B-12 deficiency was modeled in young-adult mice. Intramuscular B-12 injection in aged mice assessed the role of B-12 supplementation in age-related changes in skeletal muscl

RATIONALE: Although vitamin B12 deficiency is a well-known complication following total gastrectomy, subacute combined degeneration (SCD) rarely develops beyond 5 years postoperatively. Eight-year latency cases are rarely reported, especially when combined with chronic alcohol use, which accelerates neurologic decline and worsens prognosis. This report aims to present a rare case of delayed SCD after total gastrectomy in a patient with chronic alcoholism, emphasizing the importance of lifelong vitamin B12 monitoring in high-risk individuals.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 49-year-old man presented with

BACKGROUND: Methylmalonic acidemia, also known as methylmalonic aciduria, is a congenital organic acidemia. The accumulation of methylmalonic acid and its bypass metabolites can cause multi-system damage, particularly central nervous system damage. METHODS: We present a case of methylmalonic acidemia in a Chinese Han female child with the MMACHC gene variants. Whole exome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis were performed on the proband. Sanger sequencing, breakpoint PCR amplification, and qPCR gene expression verification were conducted on family members. RESULTS: The proband exhibited fee

OBJECTIVES: To determine the proportion of children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) having vitamin B12 deficiency, its clinical predictors, and its association with development.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 100 children between 1 mo to 59 mo [mean (SD) age 17 (12.75) mo; 55 males], with diagnosis of SAM as per WHO criteria, were included. Serum vitamin B12, serum folate, and serum ferritin levels were measured by chemiluminescence immunometric assay method, while serum Homocysteine (Hcy) level was measured by enzymatic cycling method. Development assessment was done by Denver

BACKGROUND: To determine the role of vitamin B12 deficiency in pernicious anemia and the efficacy of oral vitamin B12 replacement therapy given regardless of the etiology, and to compare the endoscopic and pathological findings in patients diagnosed with vitamin B12 deficiency.
METHODS: The study included 216 patients, aged 18 - 65 years, diagnosed with vitamin B12 level < 200 pg/mL between May 2015 and May 2016. Evaluation was made of the demographic characteristics of the patients, diseases, drugs used, dietary habits, previous use of vitamin B12 replacement therapy, family history of vitam

BACKGROUND: To determine the prevalence of subacute combined degeneration (SCD) patients with normal or elevated serum vitamin B12 level and to identify clinical characteristics of these patients.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane library, without language restriction up to June 2019 and included studies with SCD patients who were diagnosed with normal or elevated serum vitamin B12 levels. Meta-analysis was performed to estimate the prevalence of SCD in patients with normal or elevated serum vitamin B12 levels and compare the differences of clinical data between patients with

Vitamin B12 deficiency is a common complication in patients after gastrectomy. Elevated methylmalonic acid (MMA) and homocysteine are better indications of vitamin B12 deficiency than vitamin B12 serum level. We compared MMA and homocysteine levels of patients with gastric cancer after gastrectomy (n = 151) with controls (n = 142) and evaluated the prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency using MMA and homocysteine in patients. MMA and homocysteine levels were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in patients with gastric cancer after gastrectomy. Of the 151 patients assessed after gastrectomy, 32 patie

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Treatment of neuropathic pain and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) in patients with malignancy is often unsuccessful. Functional vitamin B12 deficiency, defined by elevated levels of the B12-dependent metabolites, methylmalonic acid (MMA), and/or homocysteine, despite normal B12 values, may cause neuropathy and is associated with disorders linked to increased oxidative stress. Since both cancer and neurotoxic antineoplastic agents increase oxidative stress, a role for functional B12 deficiency in CIPN was considered.
METHODS: A retrospective record review
