Qualitative changes in ultrasonic vocalization in rats after unilateral dopamine depletion or haloperidol: a preliminary study.

The sensorimotor speech/voice deficits associated with Parkinson disease have been well documented in humans. They are largely resistant to pharmacological and surgical treatment, but respond to intensive speech therapy. The mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are not well understood and are difficult to systematically test in humans. Thus, we turn to the rat as a model. The purpose of this study is to compare the ultrasonic vocalization (USV) of rats in three conditions: control, haloperidol-induced transient dopamine depletion, and unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) induced moderately-s

Oxytocin and vasopressin immunoreactivity within the forebrain and limbic-related areas in the mustached bat, Pteronotus parnellii.

The nonapeptides, oxytocin and arginine vasopressin, play an important role in mammalian social and reproductive behavior. Using immunocytochemical procedures, we identified oxytocin-immunoreactive neurons in the frontal and auditory cortices, limbic areas such as the medial septal nucleus, horizontal limb of the diagonal band and the amygdala. Only arginine vasopressin neurons were present in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. In limbic-related areas, the hypothalamic paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei and the nucleus centralis contained both oxytocin and arginine vasopressin neurons

Short-term and long-term effects of vocal distortion on song maintenance in zebra finches.

Adult zebra finch song is irreversibly altered when birds are deprived of correct feedback by deafening or denervation of the syrinx. To clarify the role of feedback in song maintenance, we developed a reversible technique to distort vocal output without damaging the auditory or vocal systems. We implanted flexible beads adjacent to the syrinx to alter its biomechanics. Immediate song aberrations included low volume, frequency shifts, missing harmonics, and production of click-like syllables. After a few weeks, seven of nine birds stopped producing some syllables. In six of these birds, the ga

AI-based monitoring of broiler vocal repertoire dynamics reveals robust developmental and diurnal patterns but limited disease sensitivity.

Broiler vocalizations may contain relevant information about the welfare and health status; however, there is limited information on how disease affects vocal patterns. This study aimed 1) to investigate whether specific vocalization changes emerge in response to two important poultry diseases: intestinal (Eimeria spp.) and respiratory (infectious bronchitis virus, IBV; combined with avian pathogenic Escherichia coli, APEC), and 2) to characterize changes in broiler chicken vocalizations over age (14-41 days of age), and across time of the day (morning: 6:00 AM-12:00 PM; afternoon: 12:00 PM-6:

Genetic analysis of stress hormone levels in hair of healthy nursery pigs and their relationships with backtest responses.

This study explored the genetics of the levels of stress hormones (cortisol, cortisone, DHEA, and DHEA-S) in hair of 863 clinically healthy Yorkshire × Landrace male pigs at ∼40 days of age and evaluated their potential as biomarkers of innate stress response by estimating genetic correlations with responses to a 30 s backtest performed at ∼27 days of age. Backtest responses included the number and intensity of vocalizations (VN and VI) and struggles (SN and SI). With pigs genotyped using a 50 K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panel that was imputed to 650 K SNPs, heritability estimates f

Antidepressant ketamine via oral gavage impairs fear memory, suppresses 22 kHz ultrasonic vocalizations, lowers GluN2A/B expression, and reduces medial habenula activity in rats.

Ketamine, an N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonist known for its rapid-acting antidepressant properties, has been extensively studied through intravenous and intraperitoneal routes. However, despite its growing use in pharmacotherapy, research on oral administration of ketamine remains limited. This study aims to investigate the behavioral and neural effects of fixed-dose oral ketamine delivered via gavage. Adult male Wistar rats were assigned to four groups receiving either saline (vehicle) or ketamine at 15 mg/kg, 30 mg/kg, or 45 mg/kg doses. Animals were tested in the forced swim

Daily high doses of atorvastatin alter neuronal morphology in a juvenile songbird model.

Statins are highly effective and widely prescribed cholesterol lowering drugs. However, statins cross the blood-brain barrier and decrease neural cholesterol in animal models, raising concern that long-term statin use may impact cholesterol-dependent structures and functions in the brain. Cholesterol is a fundamental component of cell membranes and experimentally decreasing membrane cholesterol has been shown to alter cell morphology in vitro. In addition, brain regions that undergo adult neurogenesis rely on local brain cholesterol for the manufacture of new neuronal membranes. Thus neurogene

Quasi-static ultrasound elastography of ex-vivo porcine vocal folds during passive elongation and adduction.

OBJECTIVES: The elastic properties of the vocal folds have great influence on the primary sound and thus on the entire subsequent phonation process. Muscle contractions in the larynx can alter the elastic properties of the vocal fold tissue. Quasi-static ultrasound elastography is a non-destructive examination method that can be applied to ex-vivo vocal folds. In this work, porcine vocal folds were passively elongated and adducted and the changes of the elastic properties due to that manipulations were measured. METHODS: Manipulations were performed by applying force to sewn-in sutures. Elong

Continuous pressure measurement and serial micro-computed tomography analysis during injection laryngoplasty: A preliminary canine cadaveric study.

Injection laryngoplasty (IL) has been used to treat various types of glottal insufficiency. The precise volume and location of the injected materials impact the outcomes. However, exactly how increasing volumes of material are distributed is unknown. In fact, the amount of IL material required to medialize a vocal cord tends to be determined empirically. Thus, the goal of this study was to investigate the pattern of IL material distribution by checking serial micro-computed tomography (MCT) and pressure changes during ILs. This experimental study used 10 excised canine larynges. Experimental d

Effects of prenatal exposure to valproic acid or poly(I:C) on ultrasonic vocalizations in rat pups: The role of social cues.

Sociocommunicative deficits commonly observed in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be experimentally modeled using rodents' ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs). For example, USVs emitted by pups, separated from their mothers and nest, serve as a useful tool to identify autistic-like behaviors during the early period of development. Being sensitive to social context, these neonatal calls may help to reveal reduced social attachment or abnormal processing of social information. The aim of the present study was to characterize quantitative and structural changes in USVs emitted during isolation by m

Male-specific alterations in structure of isolation call sequences of mouse pups with 16p11.2 deletion.

16p11.2 deletion is one of the most common gene copy variations that increases the susceptibility to autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders. This syndrome leads to developmental delays, including speech impairment and delays in expressive language and communication skills. To study developmental impairment of vocal communication associated with 16p11.2 deletion syndrome, we used the 16p11.2del mouse model and performed an analysis of pup isolation calls (PICs). The earliest PICs at postnatal day 5 from 16p11.2del pups were found altered in a male-specific fashion relative to wild-type (

Dissimilar interaction between dopaminergic and cholinergic systems in the initiation of emission of 50-kHz and 22-kHz vocalizations.

Rats emit 22-kHz or 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) to signal their emotional state to other conspecifics. The 22-kHz USVs signal a negative emotional state while 50-kHz USVs reflect a positive affective state. The initiation of 22-kHz USVs is dependent on the activity of cholinergic neurons within the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus that release acetylcholine along the medial cholinoceptive vocalization strip. Emission of 50-kHz USVs is dependent upon the activation of dopaminergic neurons located within the ventral tegmental area that release dopamine into the medial shell of the nucle

Differential Song Deficits after Lentivirus-Mediated Knockdown of FoxP1, FoxP2, or FoxP4 in Area X of Juvenile Zebra Finches.

Mutations in the transcription factors FOXP1 and FOXP2 are associated with speech impairments. FOXP1 is additionally linked to cognitive deficits, as is FOXP4. These FoxP proteins are highly conserved in vertebrates and expressed in comparable brain regions, including the striatum. In male zebra finches, experimental manipulation of FoxP2 in Area X, a striatal song nucleus essential for vocal production learning, affects song development, adult song production, dendritic spine density, and dopamine-regulated synaptic transmission of striatal neurons. We previously showed that, in the majority

Interhemispheric dominance switching in a neural network model for birdsong.

Male zebra finches produce a sequence-invariant set of syllables, separated by short inspiratory gaps. These songs are learned from an adult tutor and maintained throughout life, making them a tractable model system for learned, sequentially ordered behaviors, particularly speech production. Moreover, much is known about the cortical, thalamic, and brain stem areas involved in producing this behavior, with the premotor cortical nucleus HVC (proper name) being of primary importance. In a previous study, our group developed a behavioral neural network model for birdsong constrained by the struct

Effects of anxiogenic drugs on the emission of 22- and 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations in adult rats.

RATIONALE: Adult rat 22-kHz vocalizations are often associated with alarm or distress, whereas a subset of 50-kHz calls is preferentially emitted in response to amphetamine and other rewarding stimuli. Whether any 50-kHz calls reflect anxiety is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of anxiogenic drugs on 50-kHz call rate and call subtype profile, in comparison with D-amphetamine. METHODS: Adult male rats received systemic amphetamine (1 mg/kg) three times several days before testing. Ultrasonic vocalizations were then recorded after acute intraperitoneal injection of amphetamine or o

Acoustic variability and social significance of calls in female Campbell's monkeys (Cercopithecus campbelli campbelli).

Although the vocal repertoire of nonhuman primates is strongly constrained by genetic, a growing number of studies evidence socially determined flexibility. According to Snowdon et al. [Social Influences on Vocal Development (University Press, Cambridge, 1997), pp. 234-248], calls with a higher social function (affiliative or agonistic) would be expected to show more flexibility than lesser social calls. Owren and Rendall [Evol. Anthropol., 10, 58-71 (2001)] nuanced this by defending a structure-function relationship. Calls with particular acoustic properties, which directly influence the list

Short- and long-term effects of a neonatal low-protein diet in rats on the morphology of the larynx.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the short- and long-term effects of a maternal low-protein diet during lactation on offspring laryngeal morphology. Our hypothesis was that a neonatal low-protein diet during the critical period of development alters micro- and macroscopic structures of the larynx in adult rats. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were assigned to a control (casein 17%, n=24) or low-protein (casein 8%, n=24) group according to their mother's diet during lactation. Body weight gain and growth rate were recorded throughout the experiment. The larynx was removed from off

Drug delivery system of hepatocyte growth factor for the treatment of vocal fold scarring in a canine model.

OBJECTIVES: Vocal fold scarring remains a therapeutic challenge. Previous studies have indicated that hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), a strong antifibrotic element, has therapeutic potential for restoring scarred vocal folds. To enhance the effect of HGF in vivo, we developed a novel drug delivery system (DDS) in which HGF is embedded in gelatin hydrogel and continuously released over a period of 2 weeks. In the present study we investigated the therapeutic efficacy of the HGF DDS on vocal fold scarring by using a canine model. METHODS: The vocal folds of 8 beagles were unilaterally scarred b

Cardiovascular and vocalization reactions elicited by N-methyl-D-aspartate in the pretentorial periaqueductal grey of cats.

BACKGROUND: Depression in patients with schizophrenia worsens the course of the disease by increasing the risk of suicide, by complicating the clinical picture of the disorder, and by reducing the quality of the social functioning; its treatment is difficult, since monotherapy, even when involving modern antipsychotics, does not always prove successful. While the prescription of additional antidepressants (ADs) can improve the likelihood of a better outcome, the effectiveness of such augmentation in many cases is yet to be proven. Therefore, it is still important that one weighs the effectiven
