AIMS: To explore whether postpartum body fat distributions can predict type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk in women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
METHODS: Data of 442 women with GDM history from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018 were adopted. Body fat distributions were measured via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and analyzed with 14 DXA-derived indices. The association between body fat distributions and risk of T2DM in women with a history of GDM was assessed using multivariable logistic regression.
RESULTS: We found th

UNLABELLED: Evidence supporting osteoporosis screening in older men remains limited. In a large real-world cohort of 29,906 men aged ≥ 70 undergoing DXA screening, osteoporosis was identified in 16.5% and osteopenia in 51.3%, with prevalence increasing with age. These findings indicate that a substantial proportion of older men have low bone mass and are therefore at increased risk of fracture.
PURPOSE: Evidence supporting routine osteoporosis screening in older men remains limited. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence and skeletal distribution of low bone mineral density (BMD) in elderly men

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a muscle disease that increases the risk of falls, fractures, and mortality. Appendicular lean mass (ALM) assessment is central to its diagnosis, but standard methods like dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) have accessibility and cost issues. Previous artificial intelligence (AI) studies for sarcopenia assessment have been limited to single modalities and have not adequately addressed missing data modalities. This study aimed to develop and validate a multimodal AI model using frontal and lateral chest radiographs and electronic health record (EHR) data to estimat

We compared two exercise intensities on lean and fat mass among older people with HIV (PWH). The High Intensity Exercise to Attenuate Limitations and Train Habits (HEALTH) randomized sedentary PWH ≥50 years to 16 weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or continuous moderate-intensity exercise (CME), both with resistance exercise. Body composition was measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at baseline and week 16. The primary outcome was the percent change in body fat percentage (ratio of fat mass to total mass). Secondary outcomes included percent change in lean, fat,

BACKGROUND: Individuals born preterm at very low birthweight (VLBW, < 1500 g) tend to attain a smaller adult body size compared with term-born peers but less is known regarding specific body composition characteristics.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess whether adults born at VLBW have less beneficial body composition characteristics, potentially mediating the association between VLBW birth and cardiometabolic disease. Sibling controls were used to account for the potential influence of shared genetic and/or lifestyle factors.
METHODS: This cohort study featured 77 adults born at VLBW and 70 te

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the standard for bone mineral density (BMD) assessment but is often inaccessible to cognitively or physically impaired care home patients. Radiofrequency echographic multi-spectrometry (REMS), a portable and radiation-free alternative, enables effective BMD evaluation in this vulnerable and underserved population. This cross-sectional study assessed BMD using REMS in 260 patients aged ≥ 70 years (39 males, 221 females; mean age 82.29 years) between April 2023 and July 2024. Osteoporosis diagnosis was based on T-scores < - 2.5 SD or history of fragilit

Lead poisoning is a significant health concern, impacting multiple organs in the body, including the musculoskeletal system. While some studies suggest a link between lead exposure and reduced Bone Mineral Density (BMD), others report no significant relationship. This study aims to address this research gap by comparing the prevalence of osteoporosis and BMD in patients with lead poisoning to that of healthy individuals. In this study, 35 lead poisoning patients admitted to the poisoning departments of Valiasr Hospital in Birjand and Imam Reza Hospital in Mashhad were compared with 35 age- and
