The parietal reach region (PRR) in the medial bank of the macaque intraparietal sulcus has been a subject of considerable interest in research aimed at the development of brain-controlled prosthetic arms, but its anatomical organization remains poorly characterized. We examined the anatomical organization of the putative PRR territory based on myeloarchitecture and retrograde tracer injections. We found that the medial bank includes three areas: an extension of the dorsal subdivision of V6A (V6Ad), the medial intraparietal area (MIP), and a subdivision of area PE (PEip). Analysis of corticocor

BACKGROUND: Stimulation through afferent sensory input is necessary to improve voluntary functional movement in stroke patients.
OBJECTIVES: Dual-afferent sensory input, which combines electromyography-triggered functional electric stimulation (ETFES) and action observation, was investigated to determine its effects on voluntary movements in stroke patients.
METHODS: This study was conducted on 18 patients with left hemiplegia diagnosed between 6 and 24 months prior. The 9 subjects in the dual-afferent sensory input (DASI) group underwent ETFES with action observation training for 4 weeks (2

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has emerged as a therapy to treat a wide range of neurological disorders, including epilepsy, depression, stroke, and tinnitus. Activation of neurons in the locus coeruleus (LC) is believed to mediate many of the effects of VNS in the central nervous system. Despite the importance of the LC, there is a dearth of direct evidence characterizing neural activity in response to VNS. A detailed understanding of the brain activity evoked by VNS across a range of stimulation parameters may guide selection of stimulation regimens for therapeutic use. In this study, we reco

Olfaction in mammals is a dynamic process driven by the inhalation of air through the nasal cavity. Inhalation determines the temporal structure of sensory neuron responses and shapes the neural dynamics underlying central olfactory processing. Inhalation-linked bursts of activity among olfactory bulb (OB) output neurons [mitral/tufted cells (MCs)] are temporally transformed relative to those of sensory neurons. We investigated how OB circuits shape inhalation-driven dynamics in MCs using a modeling approach that was highly constrained by experimental results. First, we constructed models of c

BACKGROUND: Little research has been done on the connection between functional status and acupuncture efficacy; however, functional status is a key factor in the study of acupuncture efficacy. Therefore, we have tried to compare functional dyspepsia (FD) patients with healthy subjects (HS) to determine the different cerebral responses elicited by acupuncture stimulation at Zusanli (ST36).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: IN this study, 24 FD patients and 24 HS were given acupuncture stimulation at ST36 while being monitored by an fMRI scan.
RESULTS: Compared with HS, FD patients showed an fMRI signal d

Short-latency afferent inhibition (SAI) technique gives the opportunity to non-invasively test an inhibitory circuit in the human cerebral motor cortex that depends mainly on central cholinergic activity. Important SAI abnormalities have been reported in both patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) and cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), a model of "pure" vascular dementia (VD). Interestingly, a normalization of SAI was observed in AD after levo-dopa (L-dopa) administration. We aimed to determine whether the pharmacological manipul

BACKGROUND: The corticoreticular pathway (CRP) innervates the proximal muscles of extremities and axial muscles; therefore, it is involved in postural control and gait. We report on a patient who exhibited proximal weakness due to a CRP injury, which was evaluated using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT).
METHODS: A 62-year-old male patient who had been injured in a traffic accident underwent conservative management for a contusional hemorrhage in the right frontotemporal lobes, and a subdural and epidural hematoma in the right temporoparietal lobes. The patient exhibited right proximal weak

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of bladder sensory purinergic P2X3 and P2X2/3 receptors on modulating the activity of lumbosacral neurones and urinary bladder contractions in vivo in normal or spinal cord-injured (SCI) rats with neurogenic bladder overactivity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: SCI was induced in female rats by complete transection at T8-T9 and experiments were performed 4 weeks later, when bladder overactivity developed. Non-transected rats were used as controls (normal rats). Neural activity was recorded in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord and field potentials were acquired in respo

In the neocortex, neuronal selectivities for multiple sensorimotor modalities are often distributed in topographical maps thought to emerge during a restricted period in early postnatal development. Rodent barrel cortex contains a somatotopic map for vibrissa identity, but the existence of maps representing other tactile features has not been clearly demonstrated. We addressed the issue of the existence in the rat cortex of an intrabarrel map for vibrissa movement direction using in vivo two-photon imaging. We discovered that the emergence of a direction map in rat barrel cortex occurs long af

Differential innervation of segregated dendritic domains in the chick nucleus laminaris (NL), composed of third-order auditory neurons, provides a unique model to study synaptic regulation of dendritic structure. Altering the synaptic input to one dendritic domain affects the structure and length of the manipulated dendrites while leaving the other set of unmanipulated dendrites largely unchanged. Little is known about the effects of neuronal input on the cytoskeletal structure of NL dendrites and whether changes in the cytoskeleton are responsible for dendritic remodeling following manipulati

Both norepinephrine and acetylcholine have been shown to be critically involved in mediating attention but there remains debate about whether they serve similar or unique functions. Much of what is known about the role of these neurochemicals in cognition is based on manipulations done at the level of the cell body but these findings are difficult to reconcile with data regarding the unique contribution of cortical subregions, e.g. the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, to attention. In the current study, we directly compared the effects of noradrenergic and cholinergic deafferentation of the rat

This article presents an overview of possible mechanisms associated with pain perception, with a specific focus on understanding unusual manifestations of orofacial pain associated with nerve insult. It includes recent evidence concerning neurobiological changes that occur in the periphery at tissue and nerve sites, or within the central nervous system, and that may involve chemical and inflammatory responses, sensitization, or alterations of cellular function. Moreover, the contribution of the autonomic nervous system, changes in emotional reactivity and vigilance, the roles of high brain cen

After experimental spinal cord injury (SCI) in rats, autonomic dysreflexia is commonly induced by slightly noxious cutaneous or visceral stimuli. The presence of autonomic dysreflexia is associated with an increase in the afferent fiber arbor area labeled by cholera toxin B or with an anti-CGRP antibody. Our goal was to examine further the sensory afferent input contributing to exaggerated autonomic spinal reflexes and subsequent increases in blood pressure after SCI, typical of autonomic dysreflexia. We observed that changes in blood pressure and heart rate induced by slightly noxious stimuli

Deafferentation of the hind paw following sciatic nerve injury results in behavioral changes, such as autotomy, suggestive of persistent, spontaneous pain. The effects of deafferentation involving trigeminal nerves have, however, received less attention. Here, alterations in trigeminal ganglion neuronal activity and mechanically evoked and spontaneous behavior were studied in adult rats after a chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve (ION). Compared to sham-operated rats, most rats with ION damage were unresponsive to mechanical stimulation of the mystacial vibrissae up to 56 day

The initial cortical component of the median nerve somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP), the parietal N20, is generated in the posterior bank of the central sulcus and inverts in polarity across the sulcus. The inversion is used to identify the central sulcus. The precentral P20 is sometimes not identifiable in scalp recordings, and this has been attributed to a dipole orientation that directs the maximum positivity downward, into the brain. The authors mapped cortical SSEPs during resection of an arteriovenous malformation in the left sensorimotor area. Preoperative scalp SSEPs over the righ

Tic Douloureux (Trigeminal Neuralgia) has afflicted mankind for centuries, perhaps for all time. This sharp stabbing paroxysm of pain along the branches of the trigeminal nerve is described as "...one of the most painful problems that plagues mankind." Many theories about the cause of trigeminal neuralgia have been previously presented. Often these theories build on the previous foundations when new research presents itself. The complete picture still eludes researchers today. Much of the mechanism has been proposed, but researchers lacked one essential component. There has never been an answe

It is difficult to know which afferent types preferentially develop ectopic firing characteristics following nerve injury because axotomy disconnects the sensory receptor ending from the remainder of the afferent neuron. We compared the prevalence of ectopic firing originating in nerve-end neuromas of nerves serving muscle and skin in the rat. Spontaneous firing was much more prevalent in the injured medial gastrocnemius nerve, a hindlimb muscle nerve, than in the saphenous and sural nerves which primarily innervate hindlimb skin. Ectopic mechanosensitivity, on the other hand, was more promine

Using decerebrate frogs (Rana catesbeiana), we investigated the role of vagal and laryngeal sensory feedback in controlling motor activation of the larynx. Vagal and laryngeal nerve afferents were activated by electrical stimulation of the intact vagal and laryngeal nerves. Pulmonary afferents were activated by lung inflation. Reflex responses were recorded by measuring efferent activity in the laryngeal branch of the vagus (Xl) and changes in glottal aperture. Two glottic closure reflexes were identified, one evoked by lung inflation or electrical stimulation of the main branch of the vagus (

The question of whether a differential distribution of vestibular afferent information to central nuclear neurons is present in pigeons was studied using neural tracer compounds. Discrete tracing of afferent fibers innervating the individual semicircular canal and otolith organs was produced by sectioning individual branches of the vestibular nerve that innervate the different receptor organs and applying crystals of horseradish peroxidase, or a horseradish peroxidase/cholera toxin mixture, or a biocytin compound for neuronal uptake and transport. Afferent fibers and their terminal distributio
