Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic protozoan with an emerging ecological impact, particularly in coastal and marine ecosystems affected by terrestrial runoff. This study presents the first evidence of anti-T. gondii antibodies in sea turtles along the Espírito Santo coast, Brazil. A total of 102 serum samples were analyzed, primarily from green turtles (Chelonia mydas), with one loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta). We determined the seropositive percentage and the determinants of Leptospira exposure in domestic donkeys presented for slaughter in the State of Durango, Mexico. We report a case of an 8-year-old aborigine boy referred to our hospital for respiratory insufficiency with skin eruptions over the trunk and limbs. The skin condition was diagnosed as acquired ichthyosis. He also had a non-bleeding form of disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. Radiograph of the lungs showed bilateral perihilar opacities with bilateral pleural effusion. The diagnosis of leptospirosis was confirmed by a 4-fold rise in microagglutinating titre and polymerase chain reaction assay.

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay which amplifies repetitive DNA elements present within bacterial genomes was used to characterize and differentiate Leptospira sp. A fluorescence polarization assay (FPA) was used to test whole blood samples prepared by mixing blood cells from cattle without exposure to Brucella abortus (B. abortus) with sera from animals with confirmed (bacteriologically) infection. Anti-HTLV-I antibody was measured in 69 cerebrospinal fluids (CSFs) of cases with typical HTLV-I associated myelopathy (HAM) and other disorders whose symptoms were similar to HAM in order to evaluate the diagnostic significance of anti-HTLV-I antibody in CSF. Both gelatin particle agglutination (PA; Serodia-ATLA) method and recombinant gag-env hybrid protein coated ELISA were employed simultaneously. Antibody titers of both methods showed linear correlation. Cases with typical HAM (24 cases) and HAM with additional neurological manifestations (7 cases) showed high positivity in both methods.

Serum samples (n = 204) from 124 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in northeastern Minnesota (USA) were collected from 1984 through 1989 and tested for antibodies to six serovars of Leptospira interrogans (bratislava, canicola, grippotyphosa, hardjo, icterohemorrhagiae, and pomona) using a microtiter agglutination test. In 62 patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis, treated with gold compounds, the relationship between serological and clinical response was analysed, based on data on the rheumatoid factor (RF) titre, ESR, number of swollen joints and joint tenderness, through 3 years. The usefulness of the Widal test in diagnosing childhood typhoid fever in endemic areas was investigated. The test was done on 150 children with other febrile illnesses and 98 bacteriologically proved cases of typhoid fever. Of the 150 children with nontyphoidal fever, only one had an H agglutinin titer of 1:50. Using an H or O agglutinin titer of 1:50 or more as a criterion for diagnosis, a positive Widal test was found in 88% of typhoid fever cases on the first occasion on which the test was done. Antigenic variants were isolated from canicola by a single selection with anti-canicola monoclonal antibody CT-3. The variants were not identical to any serovars of serogroup Canicola and thought to be a new serovar. Variation frequency was calculated at 5.9 X 10(-4). The usefulness of monoclonal antibodies for selection of antigenic variants of leptospiras is discussed.
