Transdiagnostic and sex differences in cognitive profiles of autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

An increasing number of studies have shown that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) share symptoms and aetiologies. However, transdiagnostic comparisons between ASD and ADHD is complicated due to the sex differences within each condition. To clarify the similarities and differences in the cognitive functioning between ASD and ADHD, while considering potential sex differences, this study compared cognitive profiles assessed by the WAIS-III between the four groups created by orthogonally combining diagnosis and sex based on the data from 277 ASD mal

Adolescent Cannabis Use, Comorbid Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Other Internalizing and Externalizing Disorders.

Cannabis use often co-occurs with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and other internalizing and externalizing disorders. Treatment planning, including pharmacologic and psychosocial interventions, for these comorbid disorders require thorough diagnostic evaluation to determine the extent of social, emotional, and behavioral impairments, severity of substance use, and motivation for change. Improved understanding of these comorbid disorders will inform treatment planning that address current symptoms and behaviors and may also prevent the development of mental health and substance use di

Insomnia Disorder in Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Patients: Clinical, Comorbidity, and Treatment Correlates.

Introduction: Several investigations have been performed on insomnia symptoms in adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the relationship between insomnia disorder and adult ADHD has been neglected in research. The main objective of the current study is to analyze the differences between adult ADHD patients with and without insomnia disorder, in terms of ADHD clinical severity, medical and psychiatric comorbidity, psychopharmacological treatment, and quality of life. Material and Methods: Two hundred and fifty-two adult patients with ADHD (mean age 37.60 ± 13.22 years;

Factor Structure of Repetitive Behaviors Across Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Restricted interests and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) are core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and commonly occur in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Little is known about how RRBs manifest in ADHD. We quantified and compared factor structures of RRBs in children with ASD (n = 634) or ADHD (n = 448), and related factors to sex and IQ. A four-factor solution emerged, including Stereotypy, Self-Injury, Compulsions, and Ritualistic/Sameness. Factor structures were equivalent across diagnoses, though symptoms were more severe in ASD. IQ negatively correlated with Stereot

The influence of comorbid oppositional defiant disorder on white matter microstructure in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) are highly comorbid disorders. ADHD has been associated with altered white matter (WM) microstructure, though the literature is inconsistent, which may be due to differences in the in- or exclusion of participants with comorbid ODD. WM abnormalities in ODD are still poorly understood, and it is unclear whether comorbid ODD in ADHD may have confounded the current ADHD literature. Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) was used to compare fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) between ADHD patients with

Comorbidity of disruptive behavioral disorders and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder--indicator of severity in problematic behavior?

BACKGROUND: Disruptive behavioral disorders (DBD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are both characterized by certain patterns of misbehavior among adolescents. AIMS: The aim of this study was to examine how the comorbidity of DBD and ADHD affects in misbehavior among adolescents. METHODS: A total of 158 adolescents aged 16-18 years, from a subsample of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 (NFBC 1986), were interviewed with the Finnish translation of the semi-structured Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children--Present and Lifetime (K-SAD

Potential hormonal mechanisms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and major depressive disorder: a new perspective.

Hormonal influences on the organization of behavior are apparent to neuroendocrinologists but under-examined in relation to childhood and adolescent mental disorders. A central mystery in the field of developmental psychopathology is the preferential male vulnerability to behavior disorders in childhood and female vulnerability to emotional disorders in adolescence. Relative neglect of a hormonal explanation may be due to lack of simple or unifying conceptual paradigms to guide studies. This paper seeks to stimulate research in this area by drawing upon clinical psychology and neuroscience lit

Predicting attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant disorder from preschool diagnostic assessments.

The present study examined the power of measures of early preschool behavior to predict later diagnoses of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)/conduct disorder (CD). Participants were 168 children with behavior problems at age 3 who underwent a multimethod assessment of ADHD and ODD symptoms and were followed annually for 3 years. Fifty-eight percent of 3-year-old children with behavior problems met criteria for ADHD and/or ODD/CD 3 years later. Using a diagnostic interview and rating scales at age 3, the authors could accurately predict late

Test of alternative hypotheses explaining the comorbidity between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and conduct disorder.

There is significant comorbidity between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD). The conclusions of studies that examined the causes of comorbidity between ADHD and CD conflict, with some researchers finding support for the three independent disorders model and others finding support for the correlated risk factors model. We tested these models and eleven alternative hypotheses using the same analytical approach. The participants were 110 monozygotic twin pairs and 181 dizygotic twin pairs recruited from the Colorado Learning Disabilities Research Center Twin

Knowledge of social anxiety disorder relative to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder among educational professionals.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD), the 3rd most common psychiatric disorder in the United States, follows a chronic and unremitting course, often resulting in severe impairments in multiple areas of functioning. Despite a typical age of onset in early adolescence, the disorder is rarely recognized and treated in adolescent populations. Given its early age of onset, school professionals are arguably in the best position to detect symptoms of SAD and to provide appropriate referrals for assessment and intervention. This study examined the knowledge that teachers, school counselors, and school psycho

Dissecting the shared genetic architecture of bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BPD), and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are prevalent, highly heritable psychiatric disorders with significant degrees of genetic overlap. Using open-sourced summary statistics from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium and 1000 Genomes European reference panel, we fit a latent factor model (F1) capturing the shared genetic liability across MDD, BPD, and ADHD. Multivariate GWAS identified 350 linkage disequilibrium-independent loci, 105 of which have not been previously reported by the contributing univariate GWASs. Univariate,

The impact of pregestational stress on neurodevelopment: Implications for autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Emerging evidence indicates that stress experienced by parents before conception can influence offspring neurodevelopment through enduring neuroendocrine and epigenetic mechanisms. This review addresses the central question of how pregestational stress (PGS) might alter developmental trajectories and increase vulnerability to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We examined human and animal studies investigating the effects of PGS on germline epigenetic regulation, GABAergic signalling maturation and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis programming

Spontaneous activity and functional connectivity in patients with hoarding disorder comorbid with attention-deficit/hyperactive disorder.

Despite recent studies suggesting an important association of hoarder disorder (HD) and attention-deficit/hyperactive disorder (ADHD), no neuroimaging study has investigated the differences between patients with HD comorbid with ADHD and those without ADHD. This study investigated the regional spontaneous activity and functional connectivity in HD, focusing on the comorbidity with ADHD. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were obtained from 24 patients with HD and 31 healthy individuals.
