Construction of a predictive model for radiation proctitis after radiotherapy for female pelvic tumors based on machine learning.

OBJECTIVES: Radiation therapy is a main method for female pelvic malignancies, which can cause some adverse reactions, such as radiation proctitis (RP). The incidence of RP is highly positively correlated with radiation dose. There is an urgent need for a scientific method to accurately predict the occurrence of RP to help doctors make clinical decisions. In this study, based on the clinical data of female pelvic tumor patients and dosimetric parameters of radiotherapy, the random forest method was used to screen the hub features related to the occurrence of RP, and then a machine learning alg

Ecological divergence of wild birds drives avian influenza spillover and global spread.

The diversity of influenza A viruses (IAV) is primarily hosted by two highly divergent avian orders: Anseriformes (ducks, swans and geese) and Charadriiformes (gulls, terns and shorebirds). Studies of IAV have historically focused on Anseriformes, specifically dabbling ducks, overlooking the diversity of hosts in nature, including gull and goose species that have successfully adapted to human habitats. This study sought to address this imbalance by characterizing spillover dynamics and global transmission patterns of IAV over 10 years at greater taxonomic resolution than previously considered.

The effect of weather and climate on dengue outbreak risk in Peru, 2000-2018: A time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is the most common arboviral disease in humans, with an estimated 50-100 million annual infections worldwide. Dengue fever cases have increased substantially in the past four decades, driven largely by anthropogenic factors including climate change. More than half the population of Peru is at risk of dengue infection and due to its geography, Peru is also particularly sensitive to the effects of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Determining the effect of ENSO on the risk for dengue outbreaks is of particular public health relevance and may also be applicable to othe

Determining factors associated with cholera disease in Ethiopia using Bayesian hierarchical modeling.

BACKGROUND: Cholera is a diarrheal disease caused by infection of the intestine with the gram-negative bacteria Vibrio cholera. It is caused by the ingestion of food or water and infected all age groups. This study aimed at identifying risk factors associated with cholera disease in Ethiopia using the Bayesian hierarchical model. METHODS: The study was conducted in Ethiopia across regions and this study used secondary data obtained from the Ethiopian public health institute. Latent Gaussian models were used in this study; which is a group of models that contains most statistical models used i

Cluster analysis: Predicting the seizure outcome in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVES: We applied the Two-Step cluster analysis on a large cohort of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). We hypothesized that there are distinct clusters of patients with TLE based on their clinical characteristics and these clusters may predict their seizure outcome. METHODS: This was a longitudinal study of a prospectively developed database. All patients with a diagnosis of TLE were studied at the outpatient epilepsy clinic, Shiraz, Iran, from 2008 until 2021. The Two-Step cluster analysis (Schwarz's Bayesian Criterion: BIC) was applied to the whole dataset considering the dem

A multi-gene phylogenetic analysis of the leafhopper subfamily Typhlocybinae (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) challenges the traditional view of the evolution of wing venation.

Genera of the diverse leafhopper subfamily Typhlocybinae have traditionally been classified into tribes primarily based on characters of the wing venation and an intuitive phylogeny of this group was previously proposed based on the hypothetical pattern of wing vein evolution. Some recent authors suggested that wing vein characters are not always reliable but few attempts have been made to examine the status and relationships of typhlocybine tribes using rigorous phylogenetic analyses. Phylogenetic analysis of a dataset comprising DNA sequences from five gene regions (H3, H2A, 28S rDNA D2, 16S

Network Meta-Analysis: Noninvasive Imaging Modalities for Identifying Clinically Significant Portal Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Although measurement of the hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) is the current reference standard for obtaining portal venous pressures, several noninvasive imaging-based modalities have been proposed as alternatives. AIMS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the diagnostic accuracy of noninvasive imaging approaches for identifying clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH). METHODS: Two independent reviewers conducted a literature search of PubMed, SCOPUS, and the Cochrane Library from inception until January 5, 2021. The following imaging mo

Bayes analysis supports null hypothesis of anti-amyloid beta therapy in Alzheimer's disease.

Numerous clinical trials of anti-amyloid beta (Aβ) immunotherapy in Alzheimer's disease have been performed. None of these have provided convincing evidence for beneficial effects. Using traditional frequentist meta-analysis, the conclusion is that there is absence of evidence for a therapeutic effect, with a point estimate effect size of 0.05 (95% confidence interval -0.00 to 0.10, P = .055). In addition, this non-significant effect equates to 0.4 points per year on the cognitive subscale of the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale. This is well below the minimally clinically important differ

Prediction of anxiety disorders using a feature ensemble based bayesian neural network.

Anxiety disorders are common among youth, posing risks to physical and mental health development. Early screening can help identify such disorders and pave the way for preventative treatment. To this end, the Youth Online Diagnostic Assessment (YODA) tool was developed and deployed to predict youth disorders using online screening questionnaires filled by parents. YODA facilitated collection of several novel unique datasets of self-reported anxiety disorder symptoms. Since the data is self-reported and often noisy, feature selection needs to be performed on the raw data to improve accuracy. Ho

Higher versus lower oxygenation targets in COVID-19 patients with severe hypoxaemia (HOT-COVID) trial: Protocol for a secondary Bayesian analysis.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory failure is the main cause of mortality and morbidity among ICU patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In these patients, supplemental oxygen therapy is essential, but there is limited evidence the optimal target. To address this, the ongoing handling oxygenation targets in COVID-19 (HOT-COVID) trial was initiated to investigate the effect of a lower oxygenation target (partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO2 ) of 8 kPa) versus a higher oxygenation target (PaO2 of 12 kPa) in the ICU on clinical outcome in patients with COVID-19 and hypoxaemia. METHODS: The

Echinostoma chankensis nom. nov., other Echinostoma spp. and Isthmiophora hortensis in East Asia: morphology, molecular data and phylogeny within Echinostomatidae.

Life cycles, and morphological and molecular data were obtained for Echinostoma chankensis nom. nov., Echinostoma cinetorchis, Echinostoma miyagawai and Isthmiophora hortensis from East Asia. It was established that, based on both life cycle and morphology data, one of the trematodes is identical to the worms designated as Euparyphium amurensis. Genetic data showed that this trematode belongs to Echinostoma. The complex data on biological, morphological and genetic characterizations establish that the distribution of the morphologically similar species, I. hortensis and Isthmiophora melis, in

Impact of gastric resection and enteric anastomotic configuration on delayed gastric emptying after pancreaticoduodenectomy: a network meta-analysis of randomized trials.

INTRODUCTION: Delayed gastric emptying (DGE) is frequent after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). Several RCTs have explored operative strategies to minimize DGE, however, the optimal combination of gastric resection approach, anastomotic route, configuration and the use of enteroenterostomy remains unclear. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase and CENTRAL databases were systematically searched for RCTs comparing gastric resection (classic Whipple, pylorus-resecting, pylorus-preserving), anastomotic route (antecolic, retrocolic), configuration (loop gastroenterostomy/Billroth II, Roux-en-Y), and use of entero

Biogeographical characteristics of Schistosoma mansoni endemic areas in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta analysis.

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, schistosomiasis is caused by Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium with the former being widespread and more than 4 million people are estimated to be infected by S. mansoni annually with 35 million at risk of infection. Although many school- and community-based epidemiological surveys were conducted over the past decades, the national distribution of schistosomiasis endemic areas and associated socio-environmental determinants remain less well understood. In this paper, we review S. mansoni prevalence of infections and describe key biogeographical characteristics in

Economic Evaluation of Mental Health Effects of Flooding Using Bayesian Networks.

The appraisal of appropriate levels of investment for devising flooding mitigation and to support recovery interventions is a complex and challenging task. Evaluation must account for social, political, environmental and other conditions, such as flood state expectations and local priorities. The evaluation method should be able to quickly identify evolving investment needs as the incidence and magnitude of flood events continue to grow. Quantification is essential and must consider multiple direct and indirect effects on flood related outcomes. The method proposed is this study is a Bayesian

Europe as a bridgehead in the worldwide invasion history of grapevine downy mildew, Plasmopara viticola.

Europe is the historical cradle of viticulture, but grapevines (Vitis vinifera) have been increasingly threatened by pathogens of American origin. The invasive oomycete Plasmopara viticola causes downy mildew, one of the most devastating grapevine diseases worldwide. Despite major economic consequences, its invasion history remains poorly understood. We analyzed a comprehensive dataset of ∼2,000 samples, collected from the most important wine-producing countries, using nuclear and mitochondrial gene sequences and microsatellite markers. Population genetic analyses revealed very low genetic div

Neural and glial damage markers in women after long-term weight-recovery from anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: The acute state of anorexia nervosa (AN) is accompanied by increased peripheral concentrations of brain-derived damage markers indicative of ongoing neural and glial damage processes. Although these findings correspond with well-documented structural brain changes in the disorder, it remains unclear whether abnormal levels of brain-derived damage markers persist after long-term weight-recovery from AN. METHODS: To address this question, we used single-molecule array (Simoa) technology to measure serum levels of neurofilament light (NF-L), tau protein and glial fibrillary acidic prote
