Mucormycosis can be devastating and, as yet, there are no ideal therapies available. Observations that iron chelation may be a useful adjunct to antifungal treatment encouraged Spellberg et al. (J Antimicrob Chemother 2012; 715-22) to undertake a trial of deferasirox combined with liposomal amphotericin B (AmBisome(®)) as short-term therapy for mucormycosis. The results were disappointing as patients treated with deferasirox had a higher mortality rate at 90 days, leading the authors to conclude that the data did not support a role for initial, adjunctive deferasirox therapy for mucormycosis.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method was employed for determination of the pyrethroid biomarker, 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) in human urine samples. The optimized coating antigen concentration was 0.5 ng/mL with a dilution of 1:4000 for the 3-PBA antibody and 1:6000 for the enzyme conjugate. Guinea-pig liver mitochondria contain three soluble ATP-dependent acyl-CoA synthetases: (a) a medium-chain acyl-CoA synthetase, (b) a salicylate activating enzyme, and (c) a propionyl-CoA synthetase. A complete separation of these enzymes has been accomplished and the resulting preparation of propionyl-CoA synthetase (Spec. act. 4 units/mg protein) accepts acetate, propionate and butyrate as substrates with a high preference for propionate.
