INTRODUCTION: Larsen syndrome is characterised by untreatable congenital dislocation of multiple body joints, along with marked foot deformities. These patients have a flattened face with a short nose, a broad depressed nasal bridge and a prominent forehead. In this clinical note our aim is to report two cases that coursed with spinal cord compromise.
CASE REPORTS: Case 1: an 18-month-old female with congenital dislocation of knees and hips. The patient had a flat face, sunken root of nose, and carp mouth. Magnetic resonance imaging of the spine showed severe cervical kyphosis secondary to ma

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Subtelomeric chromosome imbalances are increasingly known as a cause for mental retardation. New phenotypes associated with specific rearrangements are also being delineated, such as 9q microdeletion syndrome. Here we define the major phenotypic features and the parental origin of 9q deletion.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: We present 2 children with a phenotype that is characterized by mental retardation, distinctive facial features and congenital anomalies. Both patients showed a chromosome 9q subtelomeric deletion detected by MLPA (multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplifi

Although previous studies have highlighted the inflammatory responses of fish infected with parasites and exposed to pollutants, very little is known about how these two stressors interact within the fish. In this review, which also contains original data, the effect of these two parameters on the fish inflammatory response is assessed and, in particular, the role of apoptosis and the acute phase protein, C reactive protein, is evaluated. In Cyprinus carpio exposed to 0.5 mg NH4+ l(-1) or 0.1 mg Cd2+ l(-1) and experimentally infected with the blood fluke, Sanguinicola inermis, the pollutant ty

Edwardsiella tarda is a Gram-negative bacterium that causes a systemic infection, edwardsiellosis, in fish. The virulence factors of this pathogen and its genetic determinants have not been systematically examined. In this study, TnphoA transposon mutagenesis was used to construct a library of 440 alkaline phosphatase (PhoA(+)) fusion mutants from a total of 400000 transconjugants derived from Ed. tarda PPD130/91. This library included genes for secreted and membrane-associated proteins normally involved in virulence. The library was screened for four virulence factors: siderophore production,

We studied the mutagenic potential of the trematode Opisthorchis felineus in experimentally infected guinea pigs by chromosome analysis. The investigation was conducted on 30 treated (experimentally infected) and 20 normal (uninfected) guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). A sample of living metacercariae of O. felineus was obtained from the muscle of naturally infected crucian carp captured in the Tom River, and 1 ml suspension containing approximately 50 metacercariae in 0.9% NaCl solution was individually given p.o. to guinea pigs that were used as treated specimens, whereas normal guinea pigs fro

In light of the striking differences between oligodendrocytes of the optic nerve/tract of adult goldfish and their mammalian counterparts, a further characterization of goldfish oligodendrocytes was performed. A comparison with Schwann cells was included because fish optic nerve/tract-derived oligodendrocytes bear remarkable similarities to this type of glial cell. Fish optic nerve/tract-derived oligodendrocytes that had differentiated into 04 and 6D2-positive cells and thus expressed early myelin marker molecules were found to incorporate BrdU and to divide in vitro over a period of weeks. Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein K (hnRNPK) is a multifunctional RNA-binding protein implicated in various cellular processes, yet its role in fish antiviral immunity and viral replication remains poorly understood. In this study, we found that common carp (Cyprinus carpio) hnRNPK expression was markedly upregulated following SVCV infection or poly(I:C) stimulation, accompanied by its translocation from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. Overexpression of hnRNPK enhanced viral replication, as reflected by increased viral gene expression and viral titers. Mechanistically, hnRNPK interacted wi

Suppressor of Cytokine Signaling 3 (SOCS3) plays a crucial negative regulatory role in maintaining immune homeostasis, but its function in the antibacterial immunity of common carp Cyprinus carpio remains unclear. In this study, Ccsocs3a and Ccsocs3b were cloned and identified in C. carpio for the first time. Their sequence characteristics, evolutionary relationships, and tissue expression profiles were systematically analyzed. The results showed that CcSOCS3a and CcSOCS3b contain typical conserved domains of SOCS proteins and exhibit high expression levels in immune-related tissues, including

Cetobacterium species are common members of fish-associated microbiomes and have been reported from diverse hosts, ranging from freshwater fishes such as carp and tilapia to marine sciaenids. However, their genomic characteristics and roles in oxidative stress defense remain poorly understood. In this study, we present a comprehensive characterization of Cetobacterium ceti strain MaLMAid0298, isolated from gill of the false kelpfish Sebastiscus marmoratus. A high-quality complete genome was assembled using a hybrid approach combining Illumina and Nanopore sequencing, and phylogenomic analysis

The equine herpes virus 2, E8 protein is a member of the viral FLIP family, and as such, it is a potent inhibitor of death receptor-induced apoptosis in cultured cells. To extend our study of the effects of E8 to animals, we generated a mouse model in which the progeny of a cross between two transgenic mice conditionally express E8 under the control of the collagen type I α2 chain (Col1α2) promoter, allowing us to monitor and characterize the effects of E8 expression in the mesenchymal cell lineage. We observed growth defects associated with irregular bone formation during development. In addi

The genus Rahnella has been isolated from human, fish, and water environments. We recently reported on the isolation and genomic identification of a novel pathogen R. aquatilis strain KCL-5 from crucian carp Carassius auratus. To investigate the evolution of bacterial virulence and resistance properties of R. aquatilis, comparative genomics analyses were performed for genus Rahnella strains including R. aquatilis, R. variigena, R. bruchi, and R. victoriana. This analysis provides up-to-date information on genus Rahnella genomic diversity, including comparative analyses of virulence and resista

We investigated family members' lived experience of Parkinson's disease (PD) aiming to investigate opportunities for well-being. A lifeworld-led approach to healthcare was adopted. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to explore in-depth interviews with people living with PD and their partners. The analysis generated four themes: It's more than just an illness revealed the existential challenge of diagnosis; Like a bird with a broken wing emphasizing the need to adapt to increasing immobility through embodied agency; Being together with PD exploring the kinship within couples and

The complement components C8α, C8β and C9 have important roles in the innate immune system against invading microorganisms. Partial cDNA sequences of the Pf_C8α, Pf_C8β and Pf_C9 genes (Pf: abbreviation of Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) were cloned from yellow catfish. The Pf_C8α, Pf_C8β and Pf_C9 genes showed the greatest amino acid similarity to C8α (54%) and C8β (62%) of zebrafish and to C9 (52%) of grass carp, respectively. Ontogenetic expression analyses using real-time quantitative PCR suggested that the three genes may play crucial roles during embryonic and early larval development. The mRNA

We report an infant with a unique combination of 22q11 deletion syndrome and 14q terminal deletion syndrome. The proband had clinical symptoms compatible with diagnosis of 22q11 deletion syndrome: microcephaly, micrognathia, high-arched palate, hypertelorism, short palpebral fissures, square nasal root, prominent tubular nose, hypoplastic nasal alae, bulbous nasal tip, dysplastic low-set ears, short philtrum, and heart defect, but no cell-mediated immunodeficiency typical for the syndrome. G-banding and fluorescence in situ hybridization analyses revealed a karyotype 45,XY,der(14)t(14;22)(q32.

Ulcerative lesions and mass mortalities of Atlantic estuarine fish, particularly menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus), have been associated with exposure to Pfiesteria-like dinoflagellates and their toxins. We collected fish from the Chicamacomico River, Maryland, and observed solitary ulcerative lesions on the majority of menhaden sampled. One striped bass (Morone saxatilis) had an area of reddening around the base of the dorsal fin. Bluegill (Lepomis machrochirus), channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), yellow perch (Perca flavescens), and carp (Cyprinus carpio) were externally nonremarkable. Hist

Nanotechnology has gained significant attention due to its diverse application history, particularly the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), which are different from other nanomaterials due to their strong and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Therefore, this study developed a sustainable approach for synthesizing AgNPs using vegetable waste extract, characterizing them using Uv-vis spectrometer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to confirm spherical, crystalline, and undersized nanoparticles (NPs). In a 30-day dietary exposure trial with Cyprinus carpio, fish fed AgNP-supplemented feed exh

The objective of this study was to implement population pharmacokinetic (PPK) of enrofloxacin (EF) in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) after a single oral administration and a single intravenous administration based on a nonlinear mixed effect model. The plasma samples collected by the sparse sampling method were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography with a fluorescent detector. The initial pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters were evaluated by reference search and the calculation of a naïve pooled method. After oral administration, the concentration-time profile was best described
