Current uses of ultrasound in obstetrics.

We have reviewed the current uses of ultrasound in obstetrics. The referring physician must have a clear understanding of the limitations and potential of obstetric ultrasound. The reason for requesting a particular examination should be conveyed to the ultrasonographer. Accurate dating of a particular pregnancy requires an early ultrasonic examination, preferably of the crown-rump length or at least serial BPD measurements so that the growth-adjusted sonographic age can be determined. Placental localization, if the cervical os is encroached upon, is often difficult and may require several sca

Mapping of Venous Sinus Anatomy and Occipital Bone Thickness for Safe Screw Placement in 100 Patients with 46,200 Standardized Measurements Using Computed Tomography Angiography.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective descriptive study. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to create topographical maps of occipital bone thickness and venous sinus (VS) presence to assess the risks of screw insertion in four commercially available occipital plates. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Craniocervical junction instability and deformity are serious pathological conditions that require posterior fixation of the occipital bone to the cervical vertebrae. Insertion of occipital bone screws requires evaluation of both occipital bone thickness for effective internal fixation and intracranial VS pre

Predictive Factors Affecting the Need for Mechanical Ventilation in Acute Traumatic Cervical Spinal Cord Injury.

Acute traumatic cervical spinal cord injuries (TCSCI) are associated with significant mortality and morbidity, particularly when complicated by neurogenic respiratory failure. While upper cervical-level injuries are established risk factors for mechanical ventilation, patients with acute injuries below the fifth cervical level without significant chest trauma may also require ventilatory support. However, reliable early predictors remain unclear. This study aims to identify the primary predictors of early mechanical ventilation needs in patients with acute TCSCI. We conducted a retrospective a

Outperformance of interleukin-6 over placental alpha microglobulin-1 in predicting preterm delivery in symptomatic women.

BACKGROUND: Threatened preterm labor is the major cause of hospital admission during the second half of pregnancy. An early diagnosis is crucial for adopting pharmacologic measures to reduce perinatal mortality and morbidity. Current diagnostic criteria are based on symptoms and short cervical length. However, there is a high false-positive rate when using these criteria, which implies overtreatment, causing unnecessary side effects and an avoidable economic burden. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the use of placental alpha microglobulin-1 and interleukin-6 as vaginal biomarkers combin

Clinical effect of occipitocervical and subaxial cervical fusion constructs on range of motion: comprehensive guide based on biomechanical cadaveric testing on 1009 motion segments.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the relative contribution of each cervical motion segment is vital for assessing the effect of fusion constructs on range of motion (ROM). Many spine surgeons are familiar with the work of Panjabi and White, from which these values have historically been cited. However, their data were obtained from a limited number of subjects, and methodological shortcomings have since been identified. In this study, the authors sought to improve understanding of segmental ROM using data from standardized biomechanical tests involving a large number of intact cervical spine specimens

A comparative study of mandibular changes induced by rapid maxillary expansion vs sagittal-guided Twin-block therapy during the mixed dentition period.

INTRODUCTION: It is generally accepted that the optimal timing for functional orthodontic treatment in patients with Class II malocclusion and mandibular retrusion is during the circumpubertal growth period (cervical vertebral maturation stage [CS] 3-CS4). However, these patients often present with excessive overjet and a retrusive facial profile, which compromises esthetics and increases the risk of dental trauma. Early intervention during the mixed dentition period may reduce the risk of dental trauma and help safeguard children's psychological well-being. This study aimed to evaluate the th

Evaluation of Alveolar Bone Dimensions and Root Positioning of Anterior Teeth in the Maxilla.

Buccal bone walls present significant resorption after tooth extraction, possibly related to the smaller bone thickness, length, and the sagittal position of the root, as well as the bone morphology. The goal of the present study was to measure the thickness of the cortical bone of the vestibular and palatal walls in the anterior maxilla by means of CBCT images. Measurements were taken from CBCT scans of 300 maxillary anterior teeth from 50 patients (25 women, 25 men) aged 18 to 30 years. The parameters evaluated included the thickness of the buccal and palatal cortical bone in the cervical, a

Adaptation of the uterine arcade in rats to pregnancy.

In order to study the adaptation of the uterine arterial system to pregnancy we measured vascular dimensions and other growth related data (DNA content and [3H]thymidine incorporation rate) on excised uterine arcades, pressurized to 100 mmHg, of rats before and during pregnancy (day 8, 18 and 21 of gestation). The vascular conductance of the arcade was calculated using a numerical method. In order to investigate the response of the arcade to flow impairment during early pregnancy, the same measurements were repeated on uterine arcades from pregnant animals (day 21 of gestation), where the left
