Geographical Analysis for Detecting High-Risk Areas for Bovine/Human Rabies Transmitted by the Common Hematophagous Bat in the Amazon Region, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The common hematophagous bat, Desmodus rotundus, is one of the main wild reservoirs of rabies virus in several regions in Latin America. New production practices and changed land use have provided environmental features that have been very favorable for D. rotundus bat populations, making this species the main transmitter of rabies in the cycle that involves humans and herbivores. In the Amazon region, these features include a mosaic of environmental, social, and economic components, which together creates areas with different levels of risk for human and bovine infections, as pres

The Epidemiological Importance of Bats in the Transmission of Rabies to Dogs and Cats in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, Between 2005 and 2014.

In Brazil, rabies control in dogs and cats was pioneered by the state of São Paulo with the adoption of the Pan American Health Organization … that emphasis should be placed on the implementation of public policies to support surveillance of chiropterans for rabies.

Mycobiome of the bat white nose syndrome affected caves and mines reveals diversity of fungi and local adaptation by the fungal pathogen Pseudogymnoascus (Geomyces) destructans.

Current investigations of bat White Nose Syndrome (WNS) and the causative fungus Pseudogymnoascus (Geomyces) destructans (Pd) are intensely focused on the reasons for the appearance of the disease in the Northeast and its rapid spread in the US and Canada. Urgent steps are still needed for the mitigation or control of Pd to save bats. We hypothesized that a focus on fungal community would advance the understanding of ecology and ecosystem processes that are crucial in the disease transmission cycle. This study was conducted in 2010-2011 in New York and Vermont using 90 samples from four mines

Emerging filoviral disease in Uganda: proposed explanations and research directions.

Outbreaks of Ebola and Marburg virus diseases have recently increased in frequency in Uganda. This increase is probably caused by a combination of improved surveillance and laboratory capacity, increased contact between humans and the natural reservoir of the viruses, and fluctuations in viral load and prevalence within this reservoir. The roles of these proposed explanations must be investigated in order to guide appropriate responses to the changing epidemiological profile. Other African settings in which multiple filoviral outbreaks have occurred could also benefit from such information.

Responses of mice to inoculation with low doses of a bat rabies virus variant.

Rabies is generally considered a fatal disease, yet neutralizing antibodies to rabies virus (RV) have frequently been found in sera from healthy, insectivorous bats, and mark-recapture studies have demonstrated bats that are still alive years after the first detection of anti-RV antibodies. To explore this phenomenon, we exposed mice to a big brown bat variant of RV, using three routes of inoculation, two doses of virus and two frequencies of exposure. We found the highest rate of seroconversion without mortality in mice that received repeated intramuscular inoculation of the higher dose of vi

Shimoni bat virus, a new representative of the Lyssavirus genus.

During 2009, 616 bats representing at least 22 species were collected from 10 locations throughout Kenya. A new lyssavirus, named Shimoni bat virus (SHIBV), was isolated from the brain of a dead Commerson's leaf-nosed bat (Hipposideros commersoni), found in a cave in the coastal region of Kenya. Genetic distances and phylogenetic reconstructions, implemented for each gene and for the concatenated alignment of all five structural genes (N, P, M, G and L), demonstrated that SHIBV cannot be identified with any of the existing species, but rather should be considered an independent species within

Estimating the risk of rabies transmission to humans in the U.S.: a Delphi analysis.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, the risk of rabies transmission to humans in most situations of possible exposure is unknown. Controlled studies on rabies are clearly not possible. Thus, the limited data on risk has led to the frequent administration of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), often in inappropriate circumstances. METHODS: We used the Delphi method to obtain an expert group consensus estimate of the risk of rabies transmission to humans in seven scenarios of potential rabies exposure. We also surveyed and discussed the merits of recommending rabies PEP for each scenario. RE

Response to imported case of Marburg hemorrhagic fever, the Netherland.

On July 10, 2008, Marburg hemorrhagic fever was confirmed in a Dutch patient who had vacationed recently in Uganda. Exposure most likely occurred in the Python Cave (Maramagambo Forest), which harbors bat species that elsewhere in Africa have been found positive for Marburg virus. A multidisciplinary response team was convened to perform a structured risk assessment, perform risk classification of contacts, issue guidelines for follow-up, provide information, and monitor the crisis response. In total, 130 contacts were identified (66 classified as high risk and 64 as low risk) and monitored fo

Transmission of Japanese Encephalitis virus from the black flying fox, Pteropus alecto, to Culex annulirostris mosquitoes, despite the absence of detectable viremia.

To determine the potential role of flying foxes in transmission cycles of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) in Australia, we exposed Pteropus alecto (Megachiroptera: Pteropididae) to JEV via infected Culex annulirostris mosquitoes or inoculation. No flying foxes developed symptoms consistent with JEV infection. Anti-JEV IgG antibodies developed in 6/10 flying foxes exposed to infected Cx. annulirostris and in 5/5 inoculated flying foxes. Low-level viremia was detected by real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction in 1/5 inoculated flying foxes and this animal was able to infect …

An analysis of correspondence between unique rabies virus variants and divergent big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) mitochondrial DNA lineages.

The literature supports that unique rabies virus (RABV) variants are often compartmentalized in different species of bats. In Colorado, two divergent mtDNA lineages of big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) co-occur. RABV associated with this species also segregates into two clades. We hypothesized that unique RABV variants might be associated with mtDNA lineages of Colorado big brown bats. DNA was extracted from brain tissue of rabid big brown bats, the ND2 gene was amplified to determine mtDNA lineage, and the lineage was compared to a previously derived phylogenetic analysis of the RABV N gene.

The rabies situation in Central Asia.

Rabies is a serious problem in the 11 states that make up CentralAsia. More information is needed to make rabies control effective in Central Asia. It is necessary to assess the national programmes, identify the main rabies carriers, increase the number of vaccinated dogs and cats with the aim of preventing rabies cases, and to use the worldwide experience of rabies eradication by the oral vaccination of wildlife.

Epidemiology and pathogenicity of African bat lyssaviruses.

Lyssaviruses belonging to all four known African Lyssavirus genotypes (gts) have been reported and isolated from SouthAfrica over the past few decades. These are: (1) Duvenhage virus (gt4), isolated again in 2006 from a human fatality; (2) Mokola virus (gt3), isolated irregularly, mostly from cats; (3) Lagos bat virus (gt2) continually isolated over the past four years from Epomophorus fruit bats and from incidental terrestrial animals and (4) Rabies virus (gt1) - with two virus biotypes endemic in mongoose and in canid species (mostly domestic dogs, jackals and bat-eared foxes), respectively.

Evidence for spatial representation of object shape by echolocating bats (Eptesicus fuscus).

Big brown bats were trained in a two-choice task to locate a two-cylinder dipole object with a constant 5 cm spacing in the presence of either a one-cylinder monopole or another two-cylinder dipole with a shorter spacing. For the dipole versus monopole task, the objects were either stationary or in motion during each trial. The dipole and monopole objects varied from trial to trial in the left-right position while also roving in range (10-40 cm), cross range separation (15-40 cm), and dipole aspect angle (0 degrees -90 degrees ). These manipulations prevented any single feature of the acoustic

The infective larva of Litomosoides yutajensis Guerrero et al., 2003 (Nematoda: Onchocercidae), a Wolbachia-free filaria from bat.

The infective larva of Litomosoides yutajensis Guerrero et al., 2003, a parasite of the bat Pteronotus pamellii, is described; it is distinct from congeneric infective larvae by the absence of caudal lappets. The life cycles of five other species of Litomosoides are known; three are parasites of rodents, one of a marsupial and one of a bat. As with these species, the experimental vector of L. yutoajensis used was the macronyssid mite Ornithonyssus bacoti. In nature, the main vectors are probably other macronyssids but transmission by O. bacoti, with its large host-range, could account for the

Ovulation induction by antiestrogens in an Indian tropical vespertillionid bat, Scotophilus heathi.

The ovulation induction property of ICI 182,780 a pure antiestrogen and enclomiphene citrate (ENC) was carried out in Scotophilus heathi, an Indian tropical vespertillionid bat, during December to February i.e., preovulatory period. This bat ovulates two ova naturally and shows ovulatory asynchrony. The study showed that 100 ìg of ENC followed by 10 IU hCG resulted in significantly lower number of ovulation. Whereas, the pure antiestrogen ICI 182,780 at a dose of 100 ìg followed by 10 IU hCG resulted in ovulation induction (4.2 +/- 0.4), which is significantly different in comparison to other

Unusual patterns of intermediate filament protein expression by the trophoblast and decidual cells of the short-tailed fruit bat, Carollia perspicillata.

In the short-tailed fruit bat (Carollia perspicillata) pregnancy can be prolonged by the occurrence of lengthy delays after implantation. This is associated with the development of highly invasive trophoblast that can penetrate the myometrium, mesenteries of the reproductive tract and the oviducts via perivascular (interstitial) routes. In order to confirm the identity and distribution of this trophoblast, intermediate filament protein immunocytochemistry was utilized. In some respects the expression of these proteins differed from what has been reported for more commonly-studied species. Cyto
