Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome was produced in rabbits by administration of human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Histamine levels in the animals' plasma were determined by an enzymatic-isotopic assay. The results of this study show that there is no statistically significant difference between histamine levels in ovarian hyperstimulated animals as compared with control animals. Prenatal screening using the maternal serum markers alpha-fetoprotein, human chorionic gonadotropin, and unconjugated oestriol was investigated in a native Japanese population. Comparison with a Caucasian U.S. population revealed differences which led to modification of the generally used equations for risk calculations. Prenatal screening was shown to be clinically useful.

A patient is presented, who developed a suprasellar tumour. Stereotactical biopsy of the tumour revealed the diagnosis of a dysgerminoma. Immunocytochemical examination of the CSF showed neoplastic cells staining for human chorionic gonadotropin and for alpha-fetoprotein. The results of the formation of women risk groups for invasive methods of prenatal diagnosis and cytogenetic investigations of amniotic fluid are presented. It was shown that the efficiency of prenatal diagnosis was increased due to the complex use of ultrasonography, screening for alpha-fetoprotein and chorionic gonadotropin, and invasive methods of prenatal diagnosis.

Severe ovarian hyperstimulation developed in a young woman during ovulation induction with human menopausal and chorionic gonadotropins. This was complicated by acute functional renal insufficiency with vascular overfilling and incipient pulmonary edema, possibly caused by indomethacine and fluid treatment. A case of nonimmunologic fetal hydrops associated with maternal bilateral theca lutein cysts (hyperreactio luteinalis) is presented. It is proposed that the theca lutein cysts were caused by elevated human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) production from the hydropic placenta. These cysts appeared to regress after the patient's delivery, while beta-hCG levels declined.
