Public willingness to pay for hybrid blue-green infrastructure: Evidence from the Clyde and Forth Estuaries, Scotland.

Nature-based solutions are increasingly recognised as climate-resilient strategies for coastal climate adaptation. This study estimates public willingness to pay (WTP) for the creation of hybrid blue-green infrastructure in place of vacant and derelict land in the Clyde and Forth estuaries, using a contingent valuation method with a payment card format. Tobit and interval regression models were used to evaluate the effects of socioeconomic, attitudinal, and consequentiality variables on WTP. Modelled mean annual household WTP was £84.95 (95% CI:£78.82-£91.13) for the Clyde and £86.01 (95% CI:

Implementing a climate-resilient and inclusive WASH guidance in Indonesia: A mixed-methods case study.

Climate change increasingly disrupts water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services, disproportionately affecting women, children, people with disabilities, and groups with limited adaptive resources. Evidence remains limited on how WASH programs integrate climate resilience, equity, and social inclusion and on the conditions that enable benefits to reach households. Researchers examined how Climate Change Response for Inclusive WASH (CCRIW) guidance was implemented and adapted within routine programming in Indonesia, how implementation outcomes related to post-implementation household access,

Long-term citizen science data reveals climate influences of tropical tree flowering at the regional scale.

Tropical tree reproductive phenology is sensitive to changing climate, but inter-individual and interannual variability at the regional scale is poorly understood. While large-scale and long-term datasets of environmental variables are available, reproductive phenology needs to be measured in-site, limiting the spatiotemporal scales of the data. We leveraged a unique dataset assembled by SeasonWatch, a citizen-science phenology monitoring programme in India to assess the environmental correlates of flowering in three ubiquitous and economically important tree species - jackfruit, mango and tam

Heat Exposure and Health Outcomes in Construction Workers: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Climate change is becoming a recognized health concern in the scientific community, as heat exposure poses escalating health risks to outdoor occupational groups, particularly construction workers. Heat stress and climate change may lead to adverse physical health outcomes and reduced workability among construction workers. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to (1) examine the prevalence of physical health outcomes of construction workers in relation to heat exposure and (2) analyze the association between physical health outcomes of heat exposure and work performance by sex and ag

The impact of elevation and population density on dengue incidence and force of infection across the Philippines: Implications for climate-adapted surveillance.

Climate change is accelerating the geographical expansion of Aedes mosquito vectors, facilitating the emergence of arboviral diseases such as dengue in new regions. However, there is limited understanding of how environmental factors, such as temperature and population density, differentially influence key metrics of dengue transmission. This study investigates how elevation (a proxy for temperature) and population density affect dengue incidence and force of infection (FOI), both independently and dependently, across the Philippines, with implications for climate-adapted surveillance and cont

Time-series analysis of climatic drivers of pediatric rotavirus and adenovirus infections in post-pandemic China.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the epidemiological characteristics and climate-sensitive transmission patterns of rotavirus (RV), adenovirus (AdV), and RV-AdV coinfections among children with acute gastroenteritis in Wuhan, China, during the post-COVID-19 era. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective time-series study of 53,088 pediatric patients tested for RV and AdV from April 2020 to August 2024. Age-stratified positivity rates were analyzed alongside temporal trends. Daily meteorological data (temperature, relative humidity, wind speed) and air pollutants were incorporated into a generalized addi

Hot climate, hot koalas: the role of weather, behaviour and disease on thermoregulation.

Thermoregulation is critical for endotherms living in hot, dry conditions, and maintaining optimal core body temperature (Tb) in a changing … tions for predicting the future persistence of koalas throughout their current distribution. Global climate models forecast that dry, hot weather will continue to escalate and drought events will increase in frequency, duration and severity. This is likely to push koalas and other arboreal folivores towards their thermal limit.

Climate Change Influences on the Potential Distribution of the Sand Fly Phlebotomus sergenti, Vector of Leishmania tropica in Morocco.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniases are a vector-borne disease, re-emerging in several regions of the world posing a burden on public health. As other vector-borne diseases, climate change is a crucial factor affecting the evolution of leishmaniasis. In Morocco, anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) is widespread geographically as many foci across the country, mainly in central Morocco. The objective of this study is to evaluate the potential impacts of climate change on the distribution of ACL due to Leishmania tropica, and its corresponding vector Phlebotomus sergenti in Morocco. METHODS: Using

Estimates of country level temperature-related mortality damage functions.

Many studies project that climate change is expected to cause a significant number of excess deaths. Yet, in integrated assessment models that determine the social cost of carbon (SCC), human mortality impacts do not reflect the latest scientific understanding. We address this issue by estimating country-level mortality damage functions for temperature-related mortality with global spatial coverage. We rely on projections from the most comprehensive published study in the epidemiology literature of future temperature impacts on mortality (Gasparrini et al. in Lancet Planet Health 1:e360-e367,

Spatial-temporal mapping of hand foot and mouth disease and the long-term effects associated with climate and socio-economic variables in Sichuan Province, China from 2009 to 2013.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common infectious disease caused by enteroviruses. The annual HFMD incidence increased from 37.6/100,000 in 2008 to 139.6/100,000 in 2014 in mainland China. In this study, we try to model spatial-temporal association between HFMD incidence and climate and socio-economic variables. METHODS: The annual numbers of reported cases of HFMD and populations from 2009 to 2013 were obtained from the Chinese infectious disease surveillance system. The climate data were obtained from a data sharing website hosted by the China Meteorological Administrat

Drivers of Echinococcus multilocularis transmission in China: small mammal diversity, landscape or climate?

BACKGROUND: Human alveolar echinococcocosis (AE) is a highly pathogenic zoonotic disease caused by the larval stage of the cestode E. multilocularis. Its life-cycle includes more than 40 species of small mammal intermediate hosts. Therefore, host biodiversity losses could be expected to alter transmission. Climate may also have possible impacts on E. multilocularis egg survival. We examined the distribution of human AE across two spatial scales, (i) for continental China and (ii) over the eastern edge of the Tibetan plateau. We tested the hypotheses that human disease distribution can be expla

Government extension, social support and farmers' response to climate-adaptive technologies: Insights from a discrete choice experiment.

Climate change poses substantial challenges to agricultural production systems and rural livelihoods. Leveraging agricultural extension programs to promote climate-adaptive technologies is an important pathway to enhancing agricultural resilience and ensuring food security. However, how government extension services, social support mechanisms, and economic incentives jointly shape farmers' preferences for climate-adaptive technologies remains insufficiently understood. Based on survey data from 1,547 farm households in the main maize-producing region of Liaoning Province in China, this study e

A methodological study to compare survey-based and observation-based evaluations of organisational and safety cultures and then compare both approaches with markers of the quality of care.

BACKGROUND: Patient safety concerns have focused attention on organisational and safety cultures, in turn directing attention to the measurement of organisational and safety climates. OBJECTIVES: First, to compare levels of agreement between survey- and observation-based measures of organisational and safety climates/cultures and to compare both measures with criterion-based audits of the quality of care, using evidence-based markers drawn from national care standards relating to six common clinical conditions. (This required development of an observation-based instrument.) Second, to examine

A geographic information system forecast model for strategic control of fasciolosis in Ethiopia.

A geographic information system (GIS) forecast model based on moisture and thermal regime was developed to assess the risk of Fasciola hepatica, a temperate species, and its tropical counterpart, Fasciola gigantica, in Ethiopia. Agroecological map zones and corresponding environmental features that control the distribution and abundance of the disease and its snail intermediate hosts were imported from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Crop Production System Zones (CPSZ) database on east Africa and used to construct a GIS using ATLAS GIS 3.0 software. Base temperatures of 10 degrees

Divergent urban-rural drivers of malaria vector ecology: a 6-year One Health longitudinal study in China.

BACKGROUND: Sustaining malaria elimination requires addressing residual transmission driven by Anopheles sinensis amid rapid environmental change, with a critical knowledge gap in understanding how climate, agricultural practices, and urbanization shape vector ecology. We quantified the One Health drivers of An. sinensis biting activity and population dynamics along urban-rural landscapes in eastern China to inform targeted control. METHODS: We conducted longitudinal surveillance (2016-2021) in both rural and urban settings in eastern China. Biting rates and adult densities of An. sinensis we

The impact of climate on Leptospirosis in São Paulo, Brazil.

In this work, we correlate the daily number of human leptospirosis cases with several climatic factors. We used a negative binomial model that considers hospital daily admissions due to leptospirosis as the dependent variable, and the climatic variables of daily precipitation pattern, and maximum and minimum temperature as independent variables. We calculated the monthly leptospirosis admission probabilities from the precipitation and maximum temperature variables. The month of February showed the highest probability, although values were also high during the spring months. The month of Februa
