Secondary iliopsoas abscess arising from colorectal cancer is uncommon and diagnostically challenging. We report a woman in her 50s with locally recurrent sigmoid colon cancer who developed a massive gas-forming left iliopsoas abscess during capecitabine, oxaliplatin and bevacizumab. The acute presentation was severe, with altered consciousness reported before ambulance transfer, marked inflammatory response and need for urgent CT-guided drainage and intensive monitoring. Previous Escherichia coli bacteraemia, bilateral ureteral stents, polymicrobial anaerobic abscess flora and bevacizumab exp

BACKGROUND: Carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA-125) is commonly utilized as a tumor marker for ovarian cancer. However, CA-125 is also observed to be elevated in other malignancies such as lung cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, and thyroid cancer. The factors leading to elevated CA-125 levels and their implications are not entirely clear. Accumulation of case reports associated with elevated CA-125 will be instrumental in advancing research in this area.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Here, we report a case involving a 45-year-old female patient diagnosed with Sigmoid Colon Adenocarcinoma. Laparoscopi

INTRODUCTION: Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by the complete inverted transposition of the thoracic and abdominal viscera. This anatomical variation complicates laparoscopic surgery, and there are currently no reports of single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) for patients with sigmoid colon cancer or rectal cancer with SIT.
CASE PRESENTATION: We performed SILS on 2 patients with sigmoid colon and rectal cancers who also had SIT. The first case involved a 64-year-old woman with sigmoid colon cancer. A 3.5 cm umbilical incision was made, and SILS w

BACKGROUND: Large abdominal wall defect (LAWD) measures > 20 cm in width. LAWD can easily lead to intestinal necrosis, peritonitis, other complications, and even multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Multiple intestinal fistulas are high-flow fistulas that can cause severe water-electrolyte imbalance and malnutrition, as well as inflammation, high metabolic status, and chronic intestinal failure caused by intestinal fluid corrosion in tissues around the orifice fistulas.
CASE SUMMARY: This article summarizes the nursing experience of a patient with sigmoid carcinoma who has LAWD with multiple

This case report presents a 59-year-old female patient with mandibular gingival metastasis from adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid part of the colon, who underwent radical colectomy with simultaneous hysterectomy involving and left oophorectomy (due to tumor involvement) eight years ago. Because of metastatic spread to the liver, a partial left lateral lobectomy was performed, and because of a metastatic lesion in the left adrenal gland, the latter was excised and a partial resection of the left kidney was performed. The patient was given a number of courses of chemotherapy, target therapy, and imm

The sigmoid colon is an uncommon site for the origin of primary malignant lymphomas in the GI tract. Additionally, immunosuppressive agents, widely used in treating autoimmune diseases, have been associated with the induction of malignancies, including lymphoproliferative disorders. In this report, we present a rare case of GI perforation suggesting a link between immunosuppressive therapy, particularly tacrolimus treatment, and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). A 75-year-old female patient presented with abdominal pain to our ER. She had a medical history of polymyositis and interstitial

Iatrogenic colonic perforation is a relatively infrequent yet perilous complication arising from both diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopies, potentially leading to severe septic complications and increased morbidity or mortality. Given the gravity of potential complications, surgical intervention stands as the principal treatment strategy, with various modalities selected based on clinical discretion. In this context, we present the case of a patient who underwent primary laparoscopic repair following the identification of a sigmoid colon perforation during a routine colonoscopy. Intraopera

A 63-year-old woman, who were in a nursing house, visited our hospital with complaints of bloody stools and anemia. Some investigations were performed, CS and CT revealed her diagnosis with sigmoid colon cancer(cT3N0M0)and rectosigmoid adenoma with situs inversus(SI). Laparoscopic low-anterior resection was performed. Postoperative course was good without any complications, and she discharged our hospital at the day 7 after the operation. In surgery, we had to be conscious of mirror image and set operative equipment and operative staffs inversely from normal setting. Some previous reports sugg

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the pattern of locoregional recurrence after surgery in patients with non-metastatic stage pT4 sigmoid colon cancer and the role of adjuvant radiotherapy on survival.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from 208 patients who underwent surgery in our hospital. The patients were randomly divided into training and validation groups at a 1:1 ratio. Patients at high risk for locoregional recurrence were screened using Cox regression analysis. Based on the data of 2,886 patients in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, the eff

Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is characterized by severe digestive +/- urinary dysmotility. If the conservative management fails, multivisceral transplantation (MVT) may be needed. However, urinary dysmotility remains after MVT and requires to continue urinary catheterizations and/or drainage. We report on a boy with severe CIPO complicated by (1) chronic intestinal obstruction requiring total parenteral nutrition, decompression gastrostomy, and ileostomy; (2) recurrent line infections; (3) hepatic fibrosis; and (4) distension of the bladder and upper urinary tract, and recurren

AIM: Objective and reproducible quality measures of complete mesocolic excision (CME) for colon cancer are not currently available. This study aimed to measure the inferior mesenteric stump length following CME for sigmoid colon cancer and explore surgical, pathological and oncological outcomes in patients with a stump length of <10 mm vs. ≥10 mm.
METHOD: This was a single-centre, retrospective cohort study including patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery for sigmoid colon cancer between May 2013 and May 2015. Follow-up CT scans were reviewed, and a vascular stump cut-off of <10 mm fo

The case is a 59‒year‒old woman. A detailed examination of fecal occult blood revealed a diagnosis of cStage Ⅳ sigmoid colon cancer cT3N1M1b(liver H2, hilar liver and celiac artery lymph nodes). After excision of the primary lesion, decided to give chemotherapy. The gene test was RAS gene mutation negative and EGFR positive, and mFOLFOX6 plus panitumumab (pani)was started as the first‒line treatment. Imaging tests at the end of 13 courses showed that the maximum diameter of liver metastases was reduced from 54 mm to 16 mm, and CEA was normalized from 93.9 ng/mL. However, metastasis was found i

BACKGROUND: Inguinal lymph node metastasis from rectum is uncommon but well-known occurrence, whereas that from colon adenocarcinoma is extremely rare. Inguinal lymph node metastasis from colon adenocarcinoma has only been reported in previous cases involving primary tumor invasion of the abdominal wall, or in those involving colon cancer metastasis to external iliac lymph nodes. We describe a case of inguinal lymph node metastasis from colon cancer without primary tumor invasion to the abdominal wall.

BACKGROUND: The guidelines for colonoscopy present withdrawal time (WT) and adenoma detection rate (ADR) as the quality indicator. The purpose of this retrospective study is to analyze the predicting factors with polyp detection rate (PDR) as a surrogate for ADR by using comprehensive health checkup data, and assess the correlation between PDR per each colonic segment and WT, and factors influencing WT.
METHODS: One thousand and thirty six consecutive health checkup cases from April 2015 to March 2016 were enrolled in this study, and 880 subjects who undertook colonoscopy without polyp remova

A case of colouterine fistula caused by colonic diverticulitis that was successfully treated laparoscopically is presented. A 74-year-old woman visited us with lower abdominal discomfort and vaginal excretion with minor fecal contamination. Mild tenderness was observed in her lower abdomen. Blood examinations revealed elevated white blood cell count and C-reactive protein. Sigmoid colon diverticulitis was revealed on CT, and her condition was diagnosed as colouterine fistula. Hinchey classification was stage I. After 2 weeks of conservative therapy, her symptoms were reduced, and the white blo

Primary Hodgkin's lymphoma of the colon is a rare phenomenon previously only reported in patients with chronic diverticulitis or inflammatory bowel disease. Herein we report a case of primary Hodgkin's lymphoma of the sigmoid colon in an HIV-positive patient without a history of inflammatory bowel disease or chronic diverticulitis that was later complicated by the discovery of concurrent papillary thyroid carcinoma.
