Beyond the Liver: Liver-Eye Communication in Clinical and Experimental Aspects.

The communication between organs participates in the regulation of body homeostasis under physiological conditions and the progression and adaptation of diseases under pathological conditions. The communication between the liver and the eyes has been received more and more attention. In this review, we summarized some molecular mediators that can reflect the relationship between the liver and the eye, and then extended the metabolic relationship between the liver and the eye. We also summarized some typical diseases and phenotypes that have been able to reflect the liver-eye connection in the …

Highly selective brain-to-gut communication via genetically defined vagus neurons.

The vagus nerve innervates many organs, and most, if not all, of its motor fibers are cholinergic. However, no one knows its organizing principles-whether or not there are dedicated neurons with restricted targets that act as "labeled lines" to perform certain functions, including two opposing ones (gastric contraction versus relaxation). By performing unbiased transcriptional profiling of DMV cholinergic neurons, we discovered seven molecularly distinct subtypes of motor neurons. Then, by using subtype-specific Cre driver mice, we show that two of these subtypes exclusively innervate the glan

Development of the Experienced Communication in Dementia Questionnaire: A Qualitative Study.

Communication problems with their caregivers are common in people with dementia. Although interventions for improvement of communication are being developed, a tool to measure how participants experience their communication is lacking. The objective of this article is to describe the development of a questionnaire that measures the "experienced communication" of persons with dementia (ECD-P) as well as of their caregivers (ECD-C). Interviews were conducted with five person with dementia-caregiver dyads who had recently received a new communication intervention. Reflexive thematic analysis was …

Communication-avoiding micro-architecture to compute Xcorr scores for peptide identification.

Database algorithms play a crucial part in systems biology studies by identifying proteins from mass spectrometry data. Many of these databa … cent research has shown that the overall cost of scoring, and deducing peptides is dominated by the communication costs between different hierarchies of memory and processing units. However, these communication costs are seldom considered in accelerator-based architectures leading to inefficient DRAM accesses, and poor data-utilization due to irregular memory a …

Gut-brain communication and obesity: understanding functions of the vagus nerve.

Given the crucial role of the gastrointestinal tract and associated organs in handling nutrient assimilation and metabolism, it has long been known that its communication with the brain is important for the control of ingestive behavior and body weight regulation. It is also clear that gut-brain communication is bidirectional and utilizes both rapid neural and slower humoral mechanisms and pathways. However, progress in understanding these mechanisms and leveraging them for the treatment of obesity and metabolic disease has been hindered by the enormous dimension of the gut mucosa, the complex…

Effective distance of volatile cues for plant-plant communication in beech.

In response to volatiles emitted from a plant infested by herbivorous arthropods, neighboring undamaged conspecific plants become better defended against herbivores; this is referred to as plant‒plant communication. Although plant‒plant communication occurs in a wide range of plant species, most studies have focused on herbaceous plants. Here, we investigated plant‒plant communication in beech trees in two experimental plantations in 2018 and one plantation in 2019. Approximately 20% of the leaves of a beech tree were clipped in half in the spring seasons of 2018 and 2019 (clipped tree). The d…

Therapeutic aspects of cell signaling and communication in Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a devastating chromosome X-linked disease that manifests predominantly in progressive skeletal muscle w … that affects myofibers and muscle stem (satellite) cells, as well as a disorder in which abrogated communication between different cell types occurs. We believe that by taking this systemic view, we can achieve safe and holistic treatments that can restore correct signal transmission and gene expression in diseased DMD tissues.

Acquisition of cognitive and communication milestones in infants with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the timing of developmental milestones in typical and clinical populations facilitates intervention planning and the early detection of risk for co-occurring conditions. Normative timing of developmental milestone achievement has been established for typically developing children. However, there is little information regarding the timing of cognitive and communication skill acquisition in young children with Down syndrome (DS). The objectives of this study are to (1) provide foundational information regarding the timing of cognitive and communication skill acquisition…

Communicating seminal vesicles leading to indirect vasal communication: A case report.

We are presenting a case of 42 year old male, suffering from secondary infertility. Nine years ago he developed bilateral scrotal pain followed by azoospermia and infertility. At our center during vasography we found that the dye was not seen in bladder or prostatic urethra. But interestingly a direct communication was observed between both seminal vesicles, and through that channel an indirect communication was observed between both vas deferens. It is suggested that the patient developed obstructive azoospermia as a sequel of epididymo-orchitis. It is also concluded that seminal vesicle comm…

The Role of Taste Receptor mTAS1R3 in Chemical Communication of Gametes.

Fertilization is a multiple step process leading to the fusion of female and male gametes and the formation of a zygote. Besides direct gamete membrane interaction via binding receptors localized on both oocyte and sperm surface, fertilization also involves gamete communication via chemical molecules triggering various signaling pathways. This work focuses on a mouse taste receptor, mTAS1R3, encoded by the Tas1r3 gene, as a potential receptor mediating chemical communication between gametes using the C57BL/6J lab mouse strain. In order to specify the role of mTAS1R3, we aimed to characterize i…

Brief Communication: Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor-induced Diaphragmatic Dysfunction: A Case Series.

Diaphragmatic dysfunction is a rare cause of dyspnea that can lead to hypercapnic respiratory failure. A variety of causes of diaphragmatic dysfunction have been identified, including myopathies and neuropathies, the latter of which can be further subdivided into infectious, idiopathic, demyelinating, malignant, and iatrogenic etiologies. Now, in the era of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), case reports of immune-mediated phrenic nerve palsies have been described. This diagnosis can be challenging to make, as dyspnea is a common presenting complaint and immune-mediated palsy of the phrenic

Mother-child communication about possible cancer recurrence during childhood cancer survivorship.

OBJECTIVE: Providing opportunities to communicate about possible cancer recurrence may be adaptive for youth in remission, yet parents may experience difficulty guiding discussions related to fears of cancer recurrence (FCR). This study aimed to characterize mother-child discussions about potential cancer recurrence during post-treatment survivorship and to determine predictors of maternal communication. METHODS: Families (N = 67) were recruited after the child's initial cancer diagnosis (age 5-17 years) and mothers self-reported their distress (post-traumatic stress symptoms; PTSS). During s…

The speech, language and communication needs of rough sleepers in London.

BACKGROUND: There is very little awareness of the speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) of rough sleepers. The small amount of documentation that does exist involves a wider group of homeless adults (not just rough sleepers), and reports that communication needs are an area of concern. AIMS: To investigate: (1) the reported prevalence of SLCN amongst UK nationals recorded on the Combined Homeless and Information Network (CHAIN) as sleeping on the streets of London; (2) whether rough sleepers with reported SLCN differ from those without; and (3) what factors best predict patterns of …

Communication in the Cancer Microenvironment as a Target for Therapeutic Interventions.

The tumor microenvironment (TME) is a complex system composed of multiple cells, such as non-cancerous fibroblasts, adipocytes, immune and vascular cells, as well as signal molecules and mediators. Tumor cells recruit and reprogram other cells to produce factors that maintain tumor growth. Communication between cancerous and surrounding cells is a two-way process and engages a diverse range of mechanisms that, in consequence, can lead to rapid proliferation, metastasis, and drug resistance, or can serve as a tumors-suppressor, e.g., through tumor-immune cell interaction. Cross-talk within the …
