The role of community co-designed interventions for malaria prevention and control in conflict-affected communities in Cameroon's Southwest and littoral regions.

BACKGROUND: In 2022, Cameroon was ranked the 11th of the 11 high-burden countries responsible for 70% of the global malaria burden largely due to sustained conflict in the Southwest and Northwest regions since 2018. From May 2021 to April 2024, a mixed-methods study was conducted of three community-based, co-created interventions, a community dialogue approach called the Community Health Participatory Approach (CoHPA), community health workers (CHWs) supportive supervision, and health vouchers for treatment and transportation. The study involved formative, intervention and endline phases; the

Knowledge and attitudes of the community toward human mpox virus infection in, Oromia, Ethiopia: a community-based cross-sectional study.

Human Monkeypox is a smallpox-like zoonotic infection transmitted through animals, contaminated objects, or human contact, posing growing public health risks. Despite its declaration as a global health emergency in 2022, community awareness remains limited in Ethiopia's Oromia region, where ecological and socioeconomic factors heighten vulnerability. Thus, this community-based cross-sectional study, conducted from July 6 to August 30, 2025, among 842 adults in Oromia, assessed knowledge, attitudes, and associated factors regarding Human Monkeypox. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic

Evaluating Longitudinal Community Health Worker-Led Interventions for Improving Hypertension Management in Urban U.S. Communities: A Rapid Review.

INTRODUCTION: Underserved urban U.S. communities experience a disproportionate burden of uncontrolled hypertension, driven by structural and socioeconomic barriers. Community health workers may support sustained improvements in hypertension control and self-management. METHODS: The authors systematically searched PubMed (2015-2025) for U.S.-based, urban, longitudinal community health worker-led interventions recruiting participants directly from community settings with reported pre/post blood pressure outcomes. Studies conducted in rural settings, recruiting from clinical settings, or lacking

Building community capacity in mental health care with the Strong Minds-Strong Communities programme: a randomised controlled trial in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Provider shortages and lack of culturally responsive care limit mental health services in reaching multicultural populations worldwide. We examined the effectiveness of a psychoeducational intervention aimed at building community capacity to address depression and anxiety among racial, ethnic, and linguistic minoritised adults. METHODS: Strong Minds-Strong Communities (SM-SC) was a 6-month, multicentre, longitudinal, randomised trial done in 37 community-based organisations and clinics in two US sites (Massachusetts and North Carolina). Adults aged 18 years and older speaking Engl

Training Community Clinicians in Implementing CBT-ERP for Youth with OCD: A Pilot Study in Australian Community Mental Health Services.

This pilot study evaluated the outcomes associated with a training workshop in cognitive-behavioural therapy with exposure and response prevention (ERP) for youth with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) aimed at improving clinicians' capabilities and motivations. Questionnaires and role-plays were completed by 17 Australian clinicians working across community youth (i.e., child and adolescent) mental health services. Knowledge, beliefs, and confidence in using ERP, and adherence delivering it improved at post-training. At 6-month follow-up improvements in beliefs were not maintained, while co

Stigma, Abuse, and Resistance: Unveiling Community Fear of COVID-19 Through Voices of India's Frontline Community Health Workers.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, community health workers (CHWs) worldwide faced violence and abuse. In India, CHWs, known as Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), encountered community resistance and violence in their frontline roles. However, positioned precariously within a neoliberal public health system, their voices remained absent in policymaking, reinforcing structural invisibility. This study, guided by the culture-centered approach (CCA), draws on semi-structured interviews (n = 30) with ASHAs in Odisha, India, to examine their negotiations with community resistance. Findings reve

Community's perceptions of the police during COVID-19 in Harlem, New York, a predominantly Black community: Social and geographical dimensions.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous demonstrations protesting policing practices towards the Black community have sprung up across the U.S. in recent years, especially during COVID-19. We examined the community's perception of police and its association with social (e.g., a history of discrimination and community safety) and geographical (e.g., housing type and district community) factors in New York City. METHODS: An online survey of 393 adults in Harlem was conducted between April and September 2021. A 10-item questionnaire asked about police responsiveness, safety, and racism, with higher scores indica

RE-AIM evaluation of a community-based vaccine education and communication program to improve human papillomavirus vaccine uptake in Tonga.

There is a global need for effective strategies to improve acceptance and uptake of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, particularly in the Pacific where cervical screening and treatment options are limited. While the Pacific Island nation of Tonga has high routine childhood vaccine coverage, HPV vaccine uptake has remained low since its introduction in 2022. To improve vaccine acceptance and uptake, recent evidence supports the use of community engagement approaches like the Vaccine Champions program, which trains health and community leaders to advocate for vaccines. We assessed the reac

What knowledge and skills are needed for community volunteers to take on a signposting role in community-based palliative care? A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Community volunteers in palliative care (PC) have a unique position between healthcare professionals, community residents with care needs, and informal caregivers, offering complementary care and potentially playing a key signposting role. However, they need specific support in recognizing, describing, and communicating patient needs effectively, which can be transferred through training. The specific knowledge and skills required to take on this signposting role remain unclear. AIMS: To explore (1) experiences of communication and information sharing between community volunteers

Does online communication reduce loneliness among middle-aged and older adults living alone? Focusing on intergenerational communication.

AIM: With rapid population aging, the number of single-person households with middle-aged and older adults is increasing. Social isolation among these populations is a serious problem and increases loneliness, affecting mental health. Therefore, we examined computer-mediated communication to reduce loneliness, and improve the mental health of middle-aged and older adults living alone. We hypothesized that increasing online communication (OC) frequency with intergenerational others reduces loneliness and improves mental health. METHODS: A web survey was carried out with 1900 single participant

What Made the COVID-19 Pandemic Experience Worse in Communities in Northern Nigeria: Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping of Community Perceptions.

AimsCollate local perceptions of factors influencing experience of the COVID-19 pandemic in communities in Bauchi State, Northern Nigeria.ResultsFuzzy cognitive mapping (FCM) collated participant views of what made their experience worse during the COVID-19 pandemic. FCM uses concepts linked by weighted arrows to indicate perceived causal relationships. Higher weights indicate stronger influences; positive and negative signs indicate direct and inverse causal relationships, respectively. In late 2023, local facilitators collected 81 maps in urban, rural and remote communities, 11 with administ

Mind the Clinic-Community Gap: Re-evaluation of Test Performance and False Positive Results in Community-Wide Tuberculosis Screening.

Community-wide screening for bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis may reduce the tuberculosis burden, although concerns of overtreatment remain because of false positive diagnoses due to subpar specificity of current bacteriological tests for screening. Our review and data analysis show that clinic-based test specificity estimates of Xpert against culture underestimate performance in communities, for both Xpert MTB/RIF(99.8% for community vs 98.4% for clinic) and Xpert Ultra (99.4% vs 95.6%, respectively), reducing the presumed false positivity of sputum Xpert, using culture as t

A Community-Partnered Cancer Disparities Research Collaborative Model for Engaging Members of Low-Income Black Communities in Cancer Research.

Black adults experience the highest incidence and/or mortality rates for many commonly diagnosed cancers; yet they are underrepresented in cancer basic, applied, and translational research. This underrepresentation is greatest among Black adults living in low-income communities. There are many barriers to these individuals participating in cancer research, including limited effective research engagement strategies. This paper describes the University of Florida (UF) Health Cancer Center Community-Partnered Cancer Disparities Research Collaborative (CDRC) model and its implementation. The UF CD

Community starts at home: Toward understanding the dynamic relationship between home usability and community participation for people with mobility disabilities.

To foster meaningful participation within a community, people must have access to suitable and safe housing. Unfortunately, many people with disabilities currently reside in homes that fail to meet their functional, social, and psychological needs. Limited research has explored the interaction between housing and home usability on community participation for people with disabilities. This analysis seeks to delve deeper into the intricacies of the relationship between home usability and community participation. Employing a qualitative approach and analysis, we examine the experiences of partici

Community-Centered Patient Journey Map in Opioid Use Disorder: A Tool to Address Compassion Fatigue among Community Pharmacists.

Community pharmacists have become increasingly exposed to opioid use disorders in recent decades. However, both pharmacist training and traditional practice environments have not been adequate to prepare the pharmacist for both the patient care needs and regulatory barriers of patients experiencing opioid use disorders (OUD). As a result, there is a need to increase pharmacists' awareness of both the overall patient experience as they navigate their OUD and the role of the community pharmacy as a touchpoint within that experience. To this end, a Community-Centered Patient Journey in Drug Addic

From disease- to people-centred pandemic management: organized communities, community-oriented primary care and health information systems.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the health equity gap between and within countries. Western countries were the first to receive vaccines and mortality was higher among socially deprived, minority and indigenous populations. Surprisingly, many sub-Saharan countries reported low excess mortalities. These countries share experiences with community organization and participation in health. The aim of this article was to analyse if and how this central role of people can promote a successful pandemic response. METHODS: This analysis was partly based on local and national experiences shar
