The effect of clinically relevant changes in extracellular electrolyte concentrations on human atrial arrhythmias.

BACKGROUND: Patients with recent-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) frequently present with plasma electrolyte imbalances. Low plasma concentrations of potassium (hypokalaemia), and more recently low plasma concentrations of sodium (hyponatremia), have both been shown to contribute to a pro-arrhythmic substrate and may affect the success of restoring the normal rhythm (cardioversion). However, the mechanistic effects of these electrolyte alterations on atrial electrophysiology remain incompletely understood. This study aims to investigate how clinically relevant variations in extracellular electro

Application of Machine Learning to Discriminate Photoreceptor Cell Species in Xenotransplanted Chimeric Retinas.

Photoreceptor transplantation is being studied to restore visual function in retinal diseases causing blindness, including age-related macular degeneration, hereditary eye diseases, and traumatic retinopathy. Preclinical studies often involve delivering exogenous human photoreceptor cells into animal models' retinas. A key readout in such experiments is distinguishing donor cell integration from artificial labeling secondary to material transfer of cytosolic or nuclear labels. Recognizing donor (human) versus animal photoreceptor nuclei is key, but purely immunohistology discrimination is chal

Discovering the Effects of Superior-Surface Vocal Fold Lesions via Fluid-Structure Interaction Analysis.

This study examines the impact of vocal fold (VF) lesions located on the superior surface on glottal airflow dynamics and tissue oscillatory behaviors using biomechanical simulations of a two-layered realistic VF model. It is hypothesized that morphological changes in the VFs due to the presence of a lesion cause changes in tissue elasticity and rheological properties, contributing to dysphonia. Previous research has lacked the integration of lesions in computational simulations of anatomically accurate larynx-VF models to explore their effects on phonation and contribution to voice disorders.

Quantifying Neuromuscular and Pressure Force Dynamics in Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Novel Computational Fluid Dynamics Approach Using Airway Wall Acceleration.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by recurrent upper airway collapse during sleep, resulting from interactions between aerodynamic forces, and neuromuscular activation of structures surrounding the airway. This study introduces a novel methodology for inferring the neuromuscular activity noninvasively from airway wall acceleration. The results will allow identification of the triggers for movements such as genioglossus advancement and to assess why they fail in patients with OSA. A patient with OSA underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to capture airway anatomy and motion und

Multi-scale self-attention approach for analysing motor imagery signals in brain-computer interfaces.

BACKGROUND: Motor imagery-based electroencephalogram (EEG) brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has seen tremendous advancements in the past several years. Deep learning has outperformed more traditional approaches, such next-gen neuro-technologies, in terms of productivity. It is still challenging to develop and train an end-to-end network that can sufficiently extract the possible characteristics from EEG data used in motor imaging. Brain-computer interface research is largely reliant on the fundamental problem of accurately classifying EEG data. There are still many challenges in the f

DReAmocracy: A Method to Capitalise on Prior Drug Discovery Efforts to Highlight Candidate Drugs for Repurposing.

In the area of drug research, several computational drug repurposing studies have highlighted candidate repurposed drugs, as well as clinical trial studies that have tested/are testing drugs in different phases. To the best of our knowledge, the aggregation of the proposed lists of drugs by previous studies has not been extensively exploited towards generating a dynamic reference matrix with enhanced resolution. To fill this knowledge gap, we performed weight-modulated majority voting of the modes of action, initial indications and targeted pathways of the drugs in a well-known repository, nam

Capturing Dichotomic Solvent Behavior in Solute-Solvent Reactions with Neural Network Potentials.

Simulations of chemical reactivity in condensed phase systems represent an ongoing challenge in computational chemistry, where traditional quantum chemical approaches typically struggle with both the size of the system and the potential complexity of the reaction. Here, we introduce a workflow aimed at efficiently training neural network potentials (NNPs) to explore energy barriers in solution at the hybrid density functional theory level. The computational burden associated with training at the PBE0-D3(BJ) level is bypassed through the use of active and transfer learning techniques, whereas e

Computer-aided diagnosis of skeletal metastases in multi-parametric whole-body MRI.

The confident detection of metastatic bone disease is essential to improve patients' comfort and increase life expectancy. Multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been successfully used for monitoring of metastatic bone disease, allowing for comprehensive and holistic evaluation of the total tumour volume and treatment response assessment. The major challenges of radiological reading of whole-body MRI come from the amount of data to be reviewed and the scattered distribution of metastases, often of complex shapes. This makes bone lesion detection and quantification demanding for

TumorDetNet: A unified deep learning model for brain tumor detection and classification.

Accurate diagnosis of the brain tumor type at an earlier stage is crucial for the treatment process and helps to save the lives of a large number of people worldwide. Because they are non-invasive and spare patients from having an unpleasant biopsy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans are frequently employed to identify tumors. The manual identification of tumors is difficult and requires considerable time due to the large number of three-dimensional images that an MRI scan of one patient's brain produces from various angles. Moreover, the variations in location, size, and shape of the brai

Additively manufactured patient-specific prosthesis for tumor reconstruction: Design, process, and properties.

Design and processing capabilities of additive manufacturing (AM) to fabricate complex geometries continues to drive the adoption of AM for biomedical applications. In this study, a validated design methodology is presented to evaluate AM as an effective fabrication technique for reconstruction of large bone defects after tumor resection in pediatric oncology patients. Implanting off-the-shelf components in pediatric patients is especially challenging because most standard components are sized and shaped for more common adult cases. While currently reported efforts on AM implants are focused o

A Spectroscopically Validated Computational Investigation of Viable Reaction Intermediates in the Catalytic Cycle of the Reductive Dehalogenase PceA.

Organisms that produce reductive dehalogenases utilize halogenated aromatic and aliphatic substances as terminal electron acceptors in a process termed organohalide respiration. These organisms can couple the reduction of halogenated substances with the production of ATP. Tetrachloroethylene reductive dehalogenase (PceA) catalyzes the reductive dehalogenation of per- and trichloroethylenes (PCE and TCE, respectively) to primarily cis-dichloroethylene (DCE). The enzymatic conversion of PCE to TCE (and subsequently DCE) could potentially proceed via a mechanism in which the first step involves a

Assessing the Rotation of the First Metatarsal on Computed Tomography Scans: A Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus is a multiplanar deformity that is often treated on the basis of 2-dimensional (2D) parameters and radiographs. Recurrence rates after surgical correction remain high, and failure to correct pronation of the metatarsal is increasingly stipulated as being part of the problem. Multiple methods of assessing metatarsal pronation have been proposed. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature review identifying studies that measured metatarsal pronation and torsion on computed tomography (CT) scans. Specific methodology, patient groups, results, and reliability assessme
