Family Risk Factors Associated With Oppositional Defiant Disorder Symptoms, Depressive Symptoms, and Aggressive Behaviors Among Chinese Children With Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

Family factors including parental emotion dysregulation and harsh parenting practices place children at high risk for malfunctioning in emotion regulation, depressive symptoms, and aggressive behaviors. This study investigated the associations among parental emotion dysregulation, harsh parenting practices (i.e., emotional abuse and corporal punishment), and child emotion regulation and child oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms and co-occurring depressive symptoms and aggressive behaviors. Participants included 239 parent-child dyads from 14 primary schools in Mainland China. All chil

Heart rate variability for treatment response between patients with major depressive disorder versus panic disorder: A 12-week follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Heart Rate Variability (HRV) parameters have been used to evaluate the autonomic nervous system. We hypothesized that patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and panic disorder (PD) showed different HRV profiles compared to healthy controls. We also hypothesized that we could predict the responder groups in the MDD and PD patients, using differences in HRV indices between the stress and rest phases. METHODS: 28 MDD patients and 29 PD patients were followed for 12 weeks, and we also followed 39 healthy control subjects. We measured HRV parameters at the rest, stress, and reco…

Subjective Experience, Heterophenomenology, or Neuroimaging? A Perspective on the Meaning and Application of Mental Disorder Terms, in Particular Major Depressive Disorder.

Increasing research efforts try to identify biological markers in order to support or eventually replace current practices of diagnosing men … the objectification of subjective mental states, including mental disorders. The construct of Major Depressive Disorder, one of the most prevalent mental disorders, is then analyzed in more detail. It turns out that this is a very complex construct probably associated with highly heterogeneous actual instances of the disorder. It is then shown that it is unlikely to …

Assessing remission in major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder clinical trials with the discan metric of the Sheehan disability scale.

Relatively little research has focused on the relationship between functional remission and symptomatic remission in mood and anxiety disorders. This study investigates the relationship and synchrony between symptomatic and functional remission in outpatients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Using data from three MDD (N=1419) and four GAD (N=1847) randomized, placebo-controlled duloxetine studies, we calculated the percentages of patients meeting symptomatic, functional, and combined functional-symptomatic remission criteria for each disorder. We als…

Effect of probiotic supplement on improvement of depressive symptoms in patients with substance-induced depressive disorder: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Substance-Induced Depressive Disorder (SIDD) accounts for a high health burden and requires new therapies. Bidirectional communications between the gut and the brain mediated by the microbiota point to a possible influence of probiotics as a tool for preserving mental health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial on a sample of 40 patients with SIDD. Patients were then randomly assigned into probiotic and placebo arms and underwent interventions for four continuous weeks. The clinical assessment was done using BDI and HAM-A. Immunologic…

Semantic signals in self-reference: The detection and prediction of depressive symptoms from the daily diary entries of a sample with major depressive disorder.

Individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) experience fewer positive and more negative emotions and use fewer positive words to describe themselves. Natural language processing techniques have been used to predict depression, with pronoun and emotion usage being identified as important features. However, it is unclear how depressed individuals use positive and negative words when writing about themselves. Individuals with MDD (N = 258) completed ecological momentary assessments three times a day (including the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 [PHQ-9] and a free-text diary entry) and weekly…

Voxel-based asymmetry of the regional gray matter over the inferior temporal gyrus correlates with depressive symptoms in medicated patients with major depressive disorder.

The number of patients suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD) is increasing worldwide. Imbalanced hemispherical brain activity may be an underlying factor of MDD; however, whether structural asymmetry also contributes to the symptoms experienced in MDD has been scarcely investigated. In this study, we aimed to examine cortical asymmetry in association with the severity of depressive and cognitive symptoms observed in MDD during stable medication. The association between the affective and cognitive symptoms and gray matter asymmetry was evaluated in 17 MDD patients using voxel-wise gray…

Semaglutide modulates explore/exploit decision-making in major depressive disorder: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Explore/exploit decision-making is a crucial component of motivated behavior. Explore/exploit behaviors are related to disparate cognitive and reward-related functions and have been implicated in multiple neuropsychiatric conditions, including major depressive disorder (MDD). Several mediators of explore/exploit decision-making have been proposed; metabolic mechanisms have been theorized to potentially affect its underlying processes. Here, we examined the effects of a GLP-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA), semaglutide, on explore/exploit behavior in patients with MDD, using a four-arme…

White matter functional connectome topology and its clinical correlations in adolescent major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical period for brain network remodeling and the onset of major depressive disorder (MDD); however, white matter (WM) functional topology in adolescent MDD remains underexplored. Given that WM functional signals reflect meaningful neural activity and are disrupted in psychiatric disorders, this study aimed to characterize WM functional connectome alterations in adolescents with MDD and examine their clinical associations. METHODS: Resting-state fMRI data were obtained from a cohort of adolescents with MDD (n = 320) and healthy controls (HCs, n = 144), as well …

The role of complete blood count components as diagnostic biomarkers in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) remains challenging to diagnose due to reliance on subjective clinical assessments, sparking interest in objective biological markers. Complete blood count (CBC) parameters reflect underlying biological processes, such as inflammation and oxygen transport dysfunction, both of which are implicated in MDD pathophysiology. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this systematic review is to explore the potential role of CBC parameters as biomarkers for diagnosing and assessing the severity of MDD. DATA SOURCES: The review was conducted in accordance with Preferred…

Site-specific N-glycosylation alterations in serum proteins across subtypes of adolescent depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent depressive disorder is a clinically heterogeneous condition with poorly understood molecular mechanisms. Protein N-glycosylation, a key post-translational modification involved in immune regulation and neuronal communication, has not been systematically investigated across depressive subtypes in youth. Understanding glycosylation alterations may reveal novel biochemical pathways underlying disease heterogeneity and pathophysiology. METHODS: We applied a site-specific glycoproteomic approach integrating liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and StrucG…
