An 8-Week Vitamin D3-Fortified Fruit Drink Supplementation Increases Serum Ferritin Concentration: A Randomized Controlled Trial in Malaysian Women With Low Iron Stores.

BACKGROUND: There is limited randomized controlled trial evidence to support the association between vitamin D deficiency and anemia risk, highlighting the necessity for further investigations into the role of vitamin D in influencing iron status. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of vitamin D3-fortified fruit drink consumption (4,000 IU) on vitamin D and iron status biomarkers among iron-deficient women (serum ferritin of <20 μg/L [to convert μg/L ferritin to ng/mL, multiply by 1]). DESIGN: An 8-week double-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted. SUBJECT

Assessment of Dietary Iron Intake and Sources in Early Childhood in a Nationally Representative Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency has particular importance in early childhood because of its impact on growth and development. Preventive food-based strategies of iron deficiency require knowledge of intakes and sources of iron. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess daily iron intakes (DIIs) in 2013, to compare them with the dietary reference values, to assess their evolution since 1981, and to identify iron food sources among nonbreastfed French children younger than 3 years. DESIGN: This was a nationwide cross-sectional survey conducted in 2013 in France to assess DIIs by means of comparing the

Prebiotics and the Risk of Upper Digestive Tract and Stomach Cancers: The PrebiotiCa Study.

BACKGROUND: Fiber intake may lower digestive tract cancer risk, possibly by modulating the composition of gut microbiota. However, no data are available about the role of specific fiber fractions with prebiotic activity (e.g., inulin-type fructans (ITFs), fructo-oligosaccharides (FOSs) and galactooligosaccharides (GOSs)) on the risk lower digestive tract cancers. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to assess the association between prebiotic intake and the risk of cancers of the upper digestive tract and stomach. DESIGN: Within the PrebiotiCa study, data were derived from a network of Italian case-

Diet and Chronic Disease Research in the Women's Health Initiative.

The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) has been a major contributor to diet and chronic disease research among postmenopausal US women over its 30+ year history (1993 to present). The WHI program included full-scale randomized trials of a low-fat dietary pattern high in fruits, vegetables, and grains, and of calcium and vitamin D supplementation, each with designated primary and secondary chronic disease outcomes. The history of these trials will be briefly reviewed here, along with principal findings that included evidence for breast cancer-related benefits for each of the 2 interventions. In re

Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index and Diabetes Risk in Postmenopausal Hispanic Women.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes is a major public health concern in the United States and worldwide. The dietary inflammatory index (DII) and the energy-adjusted DII (E-DII) are tools that assess dietary inflammation. Previous evidence suggests that obesity can modify the association between inflammation and disease. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the DII/E-DII and incident diabetes in self-identified Hispanic women from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). The secondary aim was to evaluate whether obesity modifies the association between the DII/E-DII sc

Factors Associated With Adherence to a Low Fermentable Carbohydrate Diet in Children With Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders.

BACKGROUND: The low-fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAP) diet (LFD) has been associated with reduced symptomology in pediatric functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). The LFD is a complex dietary intervention that may be difficult to follow; thus, there is great interest in determining factors that contribute to adherence. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether baseline abdominal pain, emotional/behavioral problems, or quality of life predict adherence to the LFD in children with FGIDs. DESIGN: This was a single-group pre-post intervention design wi

Comparison of the Ketogenic Ratio of Macronutrients With the Low-Carbohydrate Diet Score and Their Association With Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Postmenopausal Women: A Secondary Analysis of the Women's Health Initiative.

BACKGROUND: Previous attempts to identify low-carbohydrate diets (LCDs) in epidemiological studies relied on the LCD Score, which is unable to identify ketogenic dieters. Ketogenic ratios of macronutrients are clinical equations proposed to predict ketogenic diets; however, their utility in epidemiological studies is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To determine the number of participants consuming a ketogenic diet, compare ketogenic ratios to the LCD Score, and evaluate their association with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). DESIGN: Secondary analysis of the Women's Health Initiative with 17.9 ± 6.03 ye
