Inclusive palliative care for LGBTQIA+ individuals: A socioecological perspective on barriers and enablers.

INTRODUCTION: The LGBTQIA+ community faces pervasive discrimination, including in healthcare settings. This discrimination can be particularly detrimental during hospice and palliative care, where patients are especially vulnerable and may have distinct needs related to their sexual orientation or gender identity. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify the barriers and enablers to accessing equitable and inclusive palliative care for LGBTQIA+ individuals. METHODS: A self-administered online survey was conducted in November 2023 among LGBTQIA+ adults residing in Portugal. Thematic analysis

Prenatal and Childbirth Risk Factors of Postpartum Pain and Depression: A Machine Learning Approach.

OBJECTIVES: About 74.91% of U.S. mothers experience postpartum pain at 6 to 10 weeks postpartum, and one in seven U.S. mothers suffer from postpartum depression. We used machine learning to explore physical, psychological, and social factors during pregnancy and childbirth and identify the most important predictors of postpartum pain and depression. METHODS: Data were from the Listening To Mothers III survey (2012), a national representative sample of postpartum mothers. We randomly split the dataset into a training set (N = 1467) and a test set (N = 723). The final models included 34 risk fa

Associations between Experiences of Police Contact and Discrimination by the Police and Courts and Health Outcomes in a Representative Sample of Adults in New York City.

Communities marginalized because of racism, heterosexism, and other systems of oppression have a history of being aggressively policed, and in those contexts, researchers have observed associations between a range of negative experiences with police and poor physical, mental, and behavioral health outcomes. However, past studies have been limited in that experiences of police contacts were aggregated at the neighborhood level and, if police contacts were self-reported, the sample was not representative. To address these limitations, we employed NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene 2017

Myoepithelial Carcinoma arising in a background of pleomorphic adenoma.

INTRODUCTION: The negative effects of microaggressions on patient care, provider well-being, and medical education are well-documented. Critically evaluated programs addressing microaggressions remain largely absent in the literature. METHODS: We developed the 90-minute Speak Up! Simulation Workshop for GME trainees (residents, fellows), physician attendings, other health care professionals (e.g., nurses, nurse practitioners, child life specialists) based on Kolb's Experiential Learning Cycle. We utilized deidentified cases reported at our institution, emphasizing psychological safety and ups

Psychological distress and surveillance behaviors of women with a family history of breast cancer.

Women with a family history of breast cancer are at increased risk for developing the disease. This study investigated the beliefs of women at high risk for breast cancer (one or more first-degree relatives with breast cancer) about their breast cancer risk and the impact of this information on their surveillance behaviors and psychological distress. The Health Belief Model and the Fear Arousing Communications Theory were used in this study. Two hundred and seventeen women, enrolled in a breast protection program, completed a questionnaire regarding health beliefs and behaviors, social support

The psychosocial burden and stress coping strategies among seafarers.

BACKGROUND: The seafarers' professional group is one of the most numerous in the world. According to the statistics of the European Maritime Safety Agency (2020), there are approximately 280,000 people employed at sea in the European Union. The specific work environment on the ship (climatic, physical, chemical, psychological factors, etc.) is related to experiencing long-term stress. The World Health Organization considers work-related stressors to be very important determinants of health and disease. One of the basic psychological resources related to adaptation to demanding working conditio

Reducing HIV-related stigma and discrimination in healthcare settings: A systematic review of quantitative evidence.

INTRODUCTION: Stigma and discrimination (SAD) related to HIV compromise access and adherence to treatment and support programs among people living with HIV (PLHIV). The ambitious goal of ending the epidemic of HIV by 2030 set by the United Nations Joint Program of HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) will thus only be achieved if HIV-related stigma and discrimination are reduced. The objective of this review was to locate, appraise and describe international literature reporting on interventions that addressed HIV-related SAD in healthcare settings. METHODS: The databases searched were: Cumulative Index to Nurs

Sex Partnership and Self-Efficacy Influence Depression in Chinese Transgender Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Transgender women often suffer from transition-related discrimination and loss of social support due to their gender transition, which may pose considerable psychological challenges and may lead to a high prevalence of depression in this population. Increased self-efficacy may combat the adverse effects of gender transition on depression. However, few available studies have investigated the protective effect of self-efficacy on depression among transgender women, and there is a scarcity of research describing the mental health of Chinese transgender women. This study aims to descri

Development and Preliminary Testing of the Healthy Transition Scale for Patients Undergoing Haemodialysis.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop a scale to measure healthy transitions in patients undergoing haemodialysis. METHODS: Twenty-seven preliminary items of the Healthy Transition Scale to Haemodialysis (HTS-HD) were identified through a literature review and in-depth interviews with patients undergoing haemodialysis. Of these, 25 items demonstrated content validity. To verify the reliability and validity of the preliminary scale, questionnaires were administered to 234 in-centre patients undergoing haemodialysis. The data were analysed using item analysis, exploratory factor analysis, conver

Risk and resilience in the red lights: a mini-review on sex worker lived experiences and mental health outcomes.

Sex workers experience disproportionately high rates of depression, anxiety, PTSD, suicidality, dissociation, and substance use across global contexts. Sex work refers to the consensual exchange of sexual services, performances, or content for compensation; debates persist regarding the impact of coercion and constraint within sex work, particularly in relation to structural and economic pressures. This mini-review synthesizes research on the structural, social, and occupational determinants of sex workers' mental health, emphasizing how legal frameworks, work venues, stigma, and interpersonal

Emotion Regulation is Associated with Symptoms of Racial Trauma Among Minoritized People.

Race-based traumatic stress (RBTS) can develop after prolonged exposure to racial discrimination and shares similar symptoms to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, there is a scarcity of research investigating specific psychological processes associated with RBTS that may inform intervention development. As PTSD and RBTS have shared symptomology, it is possible that psychological processes implicated in PTSD may also be implicated in RBTS. The current study examined if mindfulness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation difficulties were significantly associated with RBTS sympt

The Social Lives of Infectious Diseases: Why Culture Matters to COVID-19.

Over the course of the year 2020, the global scientific community dedicated considerable effort to understanding COVID-19. In this review, we discuss some of the findings accumulated between the onset of the pandemic and the end of 2020, and argue that although COVID-19 is clearly a biological disease tied to a specific virus, the culture-mind relation at the heart of cultural psychology is nonetheless essential to understanding the pandemic. Striking differences have been observed in terms of relative mortality, transmission rates, behavioral responses, official policies, compliance with auth

Unravelling Distress in Psychotic-Like Experiences: A Systematic Review of Non-Clinical Populations.

INTRODUCTION: Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are subthreshold psychotic phenomena that occur along the psychosis continuum and are frequently accompanied by distress. However, the factors underlying distress in individuals reporting PLEs-particularly within non-clinical populations-remain insufficiently understood. This systematic review aims to synthesise the evidence on factors directly or indirectly associated with distress in PLEs among non-clinical samples. METHODS: A systematic search of Medline, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane (January 2000-March 2025) using the terms psychotic

Psychological response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada: main stressors and assets.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 crisis has unique features that increase the sense of fear, and comes with additional stressors (e.g., confusion, discrimination, quarantine), which can lead to adverse psychological responses. There is however limited understanding of differences between sociocultural contexts in psychological response to pandemics and other disasters. OBJECTIVE: To examine how Canadians in different provinces, and with different governance modes and sociocultural contexts, understand and react to the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A web-based survey was conducted from April 8-11, 2020

A semiquantitative score system for epidemiologic studies of fetal alcohol syndrome.

A total of 464 children of 323 women registered for alcoholism treatment in Budapest, Hungary, were studied in 1977-1979. A complex epidemiologic investigation was carried out using medical, psychological and anthropological data. The data were evaluated on the basis of a semiquantitative diagnostic scoring system for fetal alcohol syndrome. The score distribution curve for 301 children whose mothers imbibed during pregnancy was statistically significantly different from the score distribution curve for 163 children born to alcoholic mothers who remained abstinent during pregnancy and from the

Predicting multiple long-term conditions with role limitation at age 46 using early-life data from the 1970 British Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: There is minimal research investigating whether multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs) can be predicted using early-life data. We examined whether the risk of later-life MLTCs that impact everyday functioning can be predicted from factors recorded at birth and age 5. METHODS: Data from 5007 participants aged 46 in the 1970 British Cohort Study were analysed. The outcome was two or more self-reported MLTCs with/without role limitation (ie, impacting everyday life functioning) due to a physical or mental health condition. Backwards stepwise logistic regression was used as a variable
