Acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis following ear piercing.

A case of post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis following ear-piercing is reported. It illustrates a rare but life-threatening complication of a cosmetic procedure carried out under unhygienic conditions.

Klippel-Feil syndrome and associated ear deformities.

The Klippel-Feil syndrome is characterized by a short, thick neck with restricted head mobility and a low occipital hairline. The head appears to rest directly on the thorax and the trapezius muscles flare out on either side of the neck, producing a pterygium-like effect. Cervical roentgenograms demonstrate fusion of some or even all of the vertebral bodies into bony blocks. Ear deformities occur in approximately one-third of the Klippel-Feil patient population. We report five cases of Klippel-Feil syndrome and describe their otologic and roentgenographic features. Although no single character…

Middle ear function in learning-disabled children.

To investigate the possible association of chronic otitis media and school learning problems, past and current middle ear status in 53 learning-disabled (LD) children was compared to that of 56 control children without learning problems. A history of recurrent otitis media was obtained in 23% of the LD children and in 9% of the control children. Thirty-eight percent of LD children and 16% of control children had hearing abnormalities on pure tone audiometry; 49% of LD children and 21% of control children had abnormal tympanometry. LD children had significantly more middle ear malfunction than …

Factors leading to chronic middle ear disease.

In an Australian Aboriginal community, 65% of all people examined had clinical evidence of pathology in the ear drum or middle ear, but active ear disease was found mainly in children. In most people, both ears showed similar clinical changes. Clinical nutritional status and hygienic factors did not correlate with the presence of ear disease. Some families had significantly more ear disease than did others, suggesting that there is some as yet unidentified familial factor.

Prevalence of Ear-Piercing Complications, Associated Risk Factors, and Current Ear-Piercing Trends Among Females in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Ear piercing is one of the most commonly performed forms of body modification worldwide. While generally considered a simple procedure, it may be associated with a range of local and cosmetic complications. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate current ear-piercing trends, determine the prevalence of ear-piercing complications, and identify factors independently associated with the development of these complications among females residing in Riyadh. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among females residing in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Participants were recruited through an online self-…

Middle ear status - structure, function and pathology: A scoping review on middle ear status of COVID-19 positive patients.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is the latest public health emergency that has presented challenges globally. Limited evidence exists on the association between COVID-19 and middle ear pathologies, regardless of the respiratory nature of some of the core symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed at exploring evidence on the effects of COVID-19 on middle ear functioning as part of symptom mapping and preventive planning for ear and hearing care. METHOD: Electronic bibliographic databases, including Medline, ProQuest, PubMed, Science Direct, ERIC and Scopus, w…

Descriptive study of goat external and middle ear through computed tomography and endoscopic evaluation, compared with the human ear.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the external and middle ear of goats, using computed tomography and endoscopic dissection, comparing them with the anatomy of the human ear, aiming to evaluate the viability of this animal model for training in otological endoscopic surgery. METHODS: Images of the external and middle ear of goats were produced by computed tomography in the coronal and axial planes and analyzed. The radiological anatomy of the external and middle goat and human ear are described. Some measures of surgical interest were described, such as the length of the external auditory canal, externa…

A Case Report of a Middle Ear Mass Originated From Cartilage-like Tissue Treated With Transcanal Endoscopic Ear Surgery.

Middle ear tumors are relatively rare, and among them, the diagnoses of middle ear lesions originating from cartilage-like tissue are even rarer. Use of transcanal endoscopic ear surgery (TEES) has increased in recent years because of its advantages, such as clear visual field and minimally invasive procedure. Here, we report a middle ear mass originating from cartilage-like tissue treated with TEES. A 62-year-old woman presented with progressive right-sided hearing loss. A white mass was revealed through the tympanic membrane, and pure-tone audiometry detected a mean 50.0 dB conductive hearin…

Establishing critical differences in ear-canal stimulus amplitude for detecting middle ear muscle reflex activation during olivocochlear efferent measurements.

Objective: Assessments of the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) may have clinical utility. The MOCR is measured using contralateral inhibition of otoacoustic emissions but concurrent activation of the middle ear muscle reflex (MEMR) confounds test interpretation. MEMR activation can be detected using the change in ear-canal stimulus amplitude without versus with an MOCR elicitor. This study provides a description of how critical differences in ear-canal stimulus amplitude can be established.Design: Clicks were presented in right ears without and with a contralateral MOCR elicitor. Ear-canal s…

Clear cell hidradenocarcinoma of the ear helix: report of primary ear helix adnexal carcinoma with regional lymph node metastasis.

Clear cell hidradenocarcinoma is a rare tumor of eccrine sweat gland origin that has a predilection for the head and neck. It has an indolent growth pattern and a higher incidence of regional and distant metastases. Metastasizing adnexal carcinomas are rare; thus, currently there is no uniform treatment guideline. We report a case of an 89-year-old female patient with clear cell hidradenocarcinoma manifesting in the right ear helix that metastasized to the right parotid gland who was treated by wide local excision and radiation therapy.

Middle ear myoclonus cured by selective tenotomy of the tensor tympani: strategies for targeted intervention for middle ear muscles.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of middle ear myoclonus that was successfully cured by selective transection of the tensor tympani (TT) without sectioning the stapedius tendon (ST) and to review previously reported cases, elucidating precipitating factors for interventions targeting middle ear muscles. DATA SOURCES: One case we encountered and a recent systematic review published in 2012. STUDY SELECTIONS: In addition to our case, 23 cases identified by the previous systematic review regarding middle ear myoclonus in which surgical interventions were conducted. DATA SYNTHESIS: Outcomes for se…
