The derivation of detailed epidemiological maps, at the relevant spatial resolution, is being increasingly recognized as vital to the effective design and implementation of successful programmes for the control of parasites and their vectors. Geographical information systems (GIS) and a recently complied database on the distribution of lymphatic filariasis in India have now been used to develop the first maps at district-level (i.e. the level at which control against this parasite will be enacted in India) of filariasis endemicity in this country. The derived maps indicate both the substantial

Although living adult Wuchereria bancrofti worms can be detected by ultrasound examination of the scrotal area in approximately 80% of men infected with this filarial parasite, the location of the adult worms in the remaining 20% remains unclear. To determine this, 32 individuals who had W. bancrofti microfilaraemia but no adult worms detectable on ultrasound were treated with diethylcarbarmazine (DEC), either with a single 6 mg/kg dose (n = 13) or with a 12-day course of 6 mg/kg per day (n = 19). They were then monitored with serial physical and ultrasound examinations. Thirteen (41%) subject

Chemical pesticides are still commonly used in Thailand for control of agricultural pests and disease vectors. Organophosphates, carbamates and synthetic pyrethroids are commonly used for agricultural purposes, whereas synthetic pyrethroids have become more popular and predominate for public health use. The genetic selection of insecticide resistance (whether physiological, biochemical or behavioral) in pests and disease vectors has been extensively reported worldwide (Brown and Pal, 1971). The long-term intensive use of chemical pesticides to control insect pests and disease vectors is often

Little is known about lymphatic filariasis or the anatomical location of adult Wuchereria bancrofti in children. Seventy-eight children from Greater Recife, 23 microfilaria-positive and 55 microfilaria-negative in approximately 60 microL blood, underwent ultrasound examinations of the major superficial lymphatic vessels of the limbs, scrotal area (boys), and breast area (girls). The characteristic movements of adult worms, known as the filaria dance sign (FDS), were detected in 11 (14.1%) children. In 9 boys, the FDS was detected in lymphatic vessels of the scrotal area (8, ages 14-16) and the

Successful experimental transmission of the human lymphatic dwelling nocturnal periodic strain of Wuchereria bancrofti has been achieved from man to Indian leaf monkey (Presbytis entellus) through a susceptible strain of Aedes aegypti. The prepatent period varied between 195 and 240 days. Microfilaria (mf) levels were in general low and the peak count was attained at 1800 hr. Of the adult worms 5-12.5% were recovered from male langur while females revealed poor (2.54%) recovery. This host--parasite model thus makes available the target parasite material in substantial quantity to work on chemo

Human infection with a zoonotic Brugia species in the United States is uncommon. Positive identification of the filarial nematode is required for histopathologic diagnosis. Many cases may go unrecognized because of the nonspecific clinical manifestations and the nondiagnostic histologic changes occurring in involved lymph nodes. A case of zoonotic Brugia lymphadenitis is described in a patient from Rhode Island, in which a small nongravid female worm was identified in a lymph node biopsy specimen. The lymph node also showed a spectrum of reaction changes including the presence of florid monocy

A longitudinal study was conducted to explore transmission dynamics and epidemic trend of bancroftian filariasis in Huayuan Village, Shengli Township, Tancheng County, Shandong Province, a previous highly endemic area of it, from 1984, the fifth year after its preliminary eradication, to 1993, without any control measures being taken. Results showed proportions of residents with microfilaremia decreased to 0.12% in 1993 from 0.56% before the study. Eight of the nine microfilaria carriers before the study became negative spontaneously. Six new microfilaria carriers were detected during the stud

OBJECTIVE: To review the cytologic findings in 34 cases of lymphatic filariasis reported on fine needle aspiration cytology for the identification of various parasitic structures.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of consecutive cytologically diagnosed lymphatic filariasis in a nine-year period.
RESULTS: Thirty-three cases were confirmed as filariasis; 30 had microfilariae (group 1). Three cases (group 2) showed no microfilariae. The diagnosis in group 2 was based on the identification of an adult male worm (1 case), nongravid female worm (1 case) and fertilized eggs (1 case). Thirteen cases

Microfilarial periodic pattern of Wuchereria bancrofti in Kenya was confirmed by the statistical method proposed by Aikat and Das (1977). Fifteen microfilarial positive individuals were brought to Nairobi from Malindi, which is one of the filariasis foci on the coastal area of Kenya. From each individual a 60-microliter finger prick blood film was made every 2 hours throughout one complete 24-hour cycle. The blood films were dried for at least 48 hours and dehaemoglobinized. The fluid was filtered using Nuclepore membrane to recover any detached microfilariae. The films were stained with Giems

Several hypotheses have been put forth about the factors influencing the dynamics of infection and disease in lymphatic filariasis. However, appropriate validation of these hypotheses by real situation analyses of epidemiological data is lacking. The present analyses examine the relationship between cumulative exposure to infection and prevalence of disease by utilizing the existing entomological and clinical data collected between 1981 and 1986 in Pondicherry, South India, endemic for bancroftian filariasis. While there was a significant negative association when the cumulative exposure was c

A programme was launched in 1986 for the control of brugian filariasis in an area of high endemicity in southern India. Sustained community involvement was achieved by integrating economic measures to improve the lot of the people with the creation of widespread awareness about the cause of the disease and about the possibilities of combating it.

A rapid diagnostic test for detection of microfilaremia using a microhematocrit tube precoated with acridine orange (the Quantitative Buffy Coat [QBC] tube) was compared with a conventional 50 microliters-thick blood film (TF) in 119 volunteers in an area of Recife, Brazil that was endemic for Wuchereria bancrofti. Both the QBC and the TF techniques were 100% specific, and thus positive predictive values were equal at 100% for each technique in all subjects studied. Both techniques had equal negative predictive values of 100% in subjects with microfilarial counts > 100 per milliliter (mf/ml).

The Human Leucocytic Antigen (HLA) and the histochemical reaction of microfilaria were studied by using cytotoxicity test and microfilarial acid phosphatase activity respectively to evaluate the role of the genetic factors and the parasitic factor in the pathogenesis of filariasis. Statistical significant association was found between HLA-B7 and the susceptibility for retaining microfilariae in blood and the development of clinical manifestations of filariasis. Histochemical study reported more or less the same results obtained in Egypt in elsewhere.

Using counterimmunoelectrophoresis with rabbit antisera raised against soluble extracts of adult females of Brugia pahangi parasite antigen was detected in the serum of all cats repeatedly infected with B. pahangi. Antigen was never detected in uninfected cats. The antigen was associated with the presence of adult worms. Antigen was detected consistently in a cat that was amicrofilaraemic but at autopsy harboured only two or three adult worms. Conversely, some cats showed slowly declining numbers of microfilariae and, in these, circulating antigen declined before the number of microfilariae. E

Therapeutic efficacy and clinical side-effects of ivermectin (single dose of 100 micrograms/kg) and diethylcarbamazine (DEC) (3 mg/kg for one day, then 6 mg/kg daily for 12 d) were evaluated for microfilaricidal effect in Bancroftian filariasis. Seventy-one microfilaraemic consenting adult male patients (greater than or equal to 100 microfilariae (mf)/ml) were randomly assigned to receive ivermectin, DEC or placebo and kept in hospital for 15 d. Those receiving placebo were treated with ivermectin on day 9. Ivermectin (19 'double-blinded' and 22 'unblinded' patients) caused an abrupt reduction

A case is described of a 59-year-old black man with massive chyluria, probably due to previous infection with Wuchereria bancrofti. Notably, no edema was present despite a urinary protein loss of 40 gm. per day resulting in a serum albumin level of 13 gm./l. Conservative treatment after lymphography, including prolonged bedrest and a medium chain triglyceride diet, was unsuccessful. Bilateral excision of the perinephric fascia and fat (Gerota's fasciectomy) in 2 separate operative sessions finally resulted in complete resolution of the chyluria.

A sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (s-ELISA) is developed for detecting circulatory antigens in individuals infected with Wuchereria bancrofti in an endemic area using antibody (Ig) against excretory-secretory-metabolic antigens of the microfilariae raised in rabbit (anti-mf-ESM) and labelled with alkaline phosphatase (ESM-Ig-conjugate). An optical density reading of a sample greater than 0.075 (after subtracting the background) was taken as positive in the s-ELISA. Centperazine, an analogue of DEC, was subjected to a double blind controlled trial, to evaluate its efficacy as a newer antifilarial agent. Centperazine (300 mg/day) along with equivalent quantities of DEC and placebo were administered to different types of filariasis patients. DEC was found to be significantly effective in reducing peripheral microfilaraemia, in different weeks and months of follow-up, except at the end of 6th month, as compared to Centperazine. There was no significant difference between the placebo and Centperazine treated patients, in this respect, revealing that the drugs
