Differential functional connectivity within an emotion regulation neural network among individuals resilient and susceptible to the depressogenic effects of early life stress.

BACKGROUND: Early life stress (ELS) is a significant risk factor for depression. The effects of ELS exposure on neural network organization have not been differentiated from the effect of depression. Furthermore, many individuals exposed to ELS do not develop depression, yet the network organization patterns differentiating resiliency versus susceptibility to the depressogenic effects of ELS are not clear. METHOD: Women aged 18-44 years with either a history of ELS and no history of depression (n = 7), a history of ELS and current or past depression (n = 19), or a history of neither ELS nor d

Development and Evaluation of Individualized Music Therapy for Common Mental Disorders: Protocol for a Multistage Study.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacotherapy for common mental disorders is frequently limited by adverse events and suboptimal adherence. While music therapy offers a promising nonpharmacological alternative, its clinical utility is currently constrained by limited accessibility, inconsistent efficacy, and a lack of mechanistic clarity. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the development of individualized (receptive) music therapy (IMT), an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled, neuroscience-guided intervention, and to evaluate its efficacy, safety, and underlying neurobiological mechanisms in adults with

Therapeutic Potential of Social Chatbots in Alleviating Loneliness and Social Anxiety: Quasi-Experimental Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) social chatbots represent a major advancement in merging technology with mental health, offering benefits through natural and emotional communication. Unlike task-oriented chatbots, social chatbots build relationships and provide social support, which can positively impact mental health outcomes like loneliness and social anxiety. However, the specific effects and mechanisms through which these chatbots influence mental health remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the mental health potential of AI social chatbots, focusing on their impac

White matter microstructure and atypical visual orienting in 7-month-olds at risk for autism.

OBJECTIVE The authors sought to determine whether specific patterns of oculomotor functioning and visual orienting characterize 7-month-old infants who later meet criteria for an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and to identify the neural correlates of these behaviors. METHOD Data were collected from 97 infants, of whom 16 were high-familial-risk infants later classified as having an ASD, 40 were high-familial-risk infants who did not later meet ASD criteria (high-risk negative), and 41 were low-risk infants. All infants underwent an eye-tracking task at a mean age of 7 months and a clinical ass

Web-Based Gamified Auditory-Cognitive Dual-Task Training for Older Adults With Age-Related Hearing Loss: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Everyday listening ability is essential for individual health and well-being. Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is associated with reduced communication engagement, social isolation, loneliness, cognitive decline, and increased dementia risk. Interventions that simultaneously target auditory processing and cognitive function, particularly within engaging and ecologically valid contexts, may offer greater benefits than unimodal approaches. However, culturally adapted, web-based, gamified auditory-cognitive dual-task training (ACDT) tailored for older adults with ARHL remains underexpl

Brain age gap as a diffusion MRI-based marker of traumatic brain injury-related brain changes and associated outcomes.

Traumatic brain injury is a common neurological disorder and a leading cause of long-term disability, presenting with heterogeneous cognitive, emotional, and functional impairments. A critical clinical challenge is the early identification of patients at risk for persistent symptoms. The Brain Age Gap (BAG), the difference between an individual's predicted brain age from imaging data and their chronological age, has emerged as a potential marker of injury-related brain changes. Here, we aim to evaluate diffusion-MRI-derived BAG for identifying traumatic brain injury patients (Glasgow Coma Scal

Development, Implementation, and Preliminary Results of a Novel Social Network for Rare Disease Communities: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Rare diseases affect approximately 20 million Europeans, presenting unique challenges such as delayed diagnoses, limited therapies, and significant personal and financial burden. While resilience-supporting factors such as peer support are available and artificial intelligence-based diagnostic tools are being developed further, there is a lack of a dedicated online social network connecting patients, caregivers, relatives, and experts. This study presents the development and preliminary findings of Unrare.me, a novel social network designed to provide a secure space for experts and

Alleviating academic stress and enhancing interdisciplinary self-efficacy in university libraries: an exploratory mixed-methods study on restorative built-environment interventions.

BACKGROUND: In the digital intelligence era, higher education students-especially those in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields-face widespread academic stress, cognitive rigidity, and negative emotional rumination. Traditional psychological interventions are often confined to clinical counseling and questionnaire screenings, which can easily induce a sense of stigma and pathological labeling. Exploring non-invasive, routine physical built-environment interventions is therefore of significant academic value and practical urgency. As a campus "third space," the univer

Fertility treatment: long-term growth and mental development of the children.

Fertility treatment has been associated with obstetrical and perinatal complications. It is, however, uncertain whether fertility treatment or parental subfertility is associated with long-term development of the children. We aimed to assess the growth and mental health of children and adolescents conceived after fertility treatment compared to spontaneously conceived controls. First, we evaluated all previous studies comparing neurodevelopmental outcomes between children conceived after fertility treatment and spontaneous conceived controls. The systematic review clarified methodological limi

[Unilateral auditory hallucinations due to left temporal lobe ischemia: a case report].

Unilateral auditory hallucinations are a rare lateralization phenomenon experienced in one ear or from one direction. We recently encountered a 63-year-old right-handed man who developed transient unilateral auditory hallucinations associated with pure word deafness. The patient had a past history of myocardial infarction, lung cancer and aortic aneurysm, but no previous psychiatric or convulsive disorders. About six months before admission, he developed right hemiparesis and motor aphasia caused by a hemorrhagic left parietal infarct. These symptoms gradually improved over three weeks. Two da

Recovery Phenotypes After Head-and-Neck Reconstructive Surgery: A Prospective Cohort Comparing Free-Flap and Pedicled-Flap Pathways.

BACKGROUND: Recovery after major head-and-neck reconstruction extends beyond flap survival and wound closure, involving swallowing, psychological adaptation, body image, and overall quality of life. Integrated multidimensional assessments remain limited in routine reconstructive outcomes research. AIM: The aim of this study was to characterize and compare six-month multidimensional recovery-clinical, functional, nutritional, psychological, and body-image outcomes-between microvascular free-flap and regional pedicled-flap reconstruction and to identify factors that stratify risk for persistent

Examining the association between language, expository discourse and offending behaviour: an investigation of direction, strength and independence.

BACKGROUND: A high prevalence of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is reported in the population of Young Offenders (YO). However, little is known about the extent of the association between language and offending behaviour relative to social disadvantage, education attendance and non-verbal intelligence (IQ), and neither has this association been investigated with particular reference to the expository discourse abilities of YOs on community orders in the UK. AIMS: This study aimed to examine the direction and strength of the association between language and offending behaviour by compar

Smart Speaker-Based Applications to Support Social Connectedness in Older Adult Residents in Affordable Housing: User-Centered Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults in affordable housing face heightened risks of social isolation and loneliness due to limited social networks, transportation barriers, chronic conditions, and inadequate technology access. Smart speakers offer potential for enhancing social connectedness in this underserved population, yet technology interventions are rarely designed with meaningful input from older adults themselves. User-centered design (UCD) approaches can address this gap by engaging end users throughout the development process to ensure technology solutions align with their needs and living conte

Evaluating the VOCORDER device for early disease detection through breath analysis: study protocol for a two-phase clinical study.

INTRODUCTION: The survival rate of patients with life-threatening diseases primarily depends on the speed of diagnosis. Too often, diseases are detected only after symptoms appear, which usually occurs at later stages of a disease when available treatments may be less effective. Current detection techniques primarily depend on identifying metabolites in biofluids such as blood and urine. The analysis of these fluids is typically performed in laboratories, resulting in lengthy waiting times for patients to receive their results. In severe cases, invasive biopsies and radiative methods are used

Factors Shaping Trust and Satisfaction With AI Medical Chatbots: A Mixed Methods Vignette Survey of Caregivers Seeking Guidance on Pediatric Infectious Diseases.

BACKGROUND: As artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots become an increasingly common source of quick medical guidance, it is important to understand whether their responses meet users' needs and support well-informed health decisions. Yet, existing evaluation frameworks rely primarily on expert-defined evaluation dimensions that have not been empirically validated with end users. It remains unclear whether these frameworks capture the criteria people actually use when judging a response to be useful, trustworthy, and satisfying, or which evaluation dimensions matter most to users in practice. Artificial Intelligence and Psychophysiological Monitoring for Integrated Performance Modeling in Elite Soccer: A Scoping Review of Applications, Evidence Gaps, and Translational Challenges.

BACKGROUND: Elite soccer performance emerges from the interplay of cognitive, emotional, psychophysiological, and tactical processes that operate in real time during matches. Advances in wearable sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) now allow continuous monitoring of physiological and psychological states. They also allow modeling of how these states relate to tactical and physical performance. Existing reviews have examined machine learning in soccer, heart rate variability (HRV) monitoring, and psychological determinants of performance separately. No scoping review has mapped the interse
