BackgroundEvidence supports the benefits of exercise for patients with cancer; however, specific guidance for clinical decision making regarding exercise timing, frequency, duration, and intensity is lacking. Efforts are needed to optimize clinical recommendations for exercise in the cancer population.ObjectivesTo aggregate information regarding the benefit of exercise through a systematic review of existing systematic reviews in the cancer exercise literature.Data sourcesPubMed, CINAHL Plus, Scopus, Web of Science, and EMBASE.Study eligibility criteriaSystematic reviews and meta-analyses of t

No adverse events or near misses were reported.

Cancer associated body wasting is the cause of physical disability, reduced tolerance to anticancer therapy and reduced survival of cancer patients and, similarly to cancer, its incidence is increasing. There is no cure for this clinical condition, and the pathophysiological process involved is largely unknown. Exercise training appears as the gold standard non-pharmacological therapy for the management of this wasting syndrome. Herein we used a lipidomics approach based on liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HR-MS) to study the effect of exercise in the mo

The clinical and haemodynamic effects of 12 weeks of treatment with torasemide, 5 mg/day, were measured in 24 men aged 51-60 years with symptoms of mild, chronic, congestive heart failure. Clinical status was assessed by NYHA functional class and haemodynamic effects were measured at rest and during supine bicycle exercise at the beginning and end of the 12-week period of study. Torasemide was well tolerated and there was no significant change in any of the measured safety variables. Clinical status was improved in 16 of the 23 patients assessed after 12 weeks of treatment and none experienced

A patient is described with a typical manifestation of pulmonary hypertension associated with limited cutaneous scleroderma, also known as CREST syndrome. The patient was treated with a calcium antagonist, oral anticoagulation and, because of evidence for parenchymal inflammation of the lung, with low-dose prednisone and cyclophosphamide. This treatment resulted in initial improvement of diffusion capacity and exercise tolerance, however, 1 year after diagnosis the patient died of progressive pulmonary hypertension.

The study performed by the authors into the effect of low-frequency magnetic field on coronary heart disease, cervical and thoracic osteochondrosis arising in senile and presenile patients showed the treatment to promote improvement of the heart autonomic regulation and attenuation of ischemic and vertebrogenic pain, to augment response to antiarrhythmic treatment in coronary patients with extrasystoles, to compensate for negatively inotropic effect of propranolol hydrochloride, to increase exercise tolerance.

A child with debrancher deficiency presented with myopathy, recurrent hypoglycemia, and growth failure. Evidence for enhanced gluconeogenesis was demonstrated by low postabsorptive gluconeogenic plasma amino acids, a marked fall in alanine during fasting, and a substantial rise in plasma glucose following protein ingestion. The patient was treated with high-protein nocturnal intragastric therapy, which resulted in marked improvement in exercise tolerance, muscle strength and mass, electromyographic findings, and growth.

Exercise offers many physical and health benefits to people with heart failure (CHF), but aerobic training (AT) predominates published literature. Resistance training (RT) provides additional and complementary health benefits to AT in people with CHF; we aimed to elucidate specific health benefits accrued, the mechanism of effect and safety of RT. We conducted a systematic search for RT randomised, controlled trials in people with CHF, up until August 30, 2023. RT offers several benefits including improved physical function (peak VO2 and 6MWD), quality of life, cardiac systolic and diastolic f

Maintaining cancer patients' exercise capacity and therefore patients' ability to live a self-determined life is of huge importance, but little is known about major determinants. We sought to identify determinants of exercise capacity in patients with a broad spectrum of cancer types, who were already receiving cancer treatment or about to commence such therapy. Exercise capacity was assessed in 253 consecutive patients mostly suffering from advanced cancer using the 6-min walk test (6-MWT). All patients underwent echocardiography, physical examination, resting electrocardiogram, hand grip str

BACKGROUND: Exercise mimetics is a proposed class of therapeutics that specifically mimics or enhances the therapeutic effects of exercise. Muscle glycogen and lactate extrusion are critical for physical performance. The mechanism by which glycogen and lactate metabolism are manipulated during exercise remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the effect of miR-92b on the upregulation of exercise training-induced physical performance.
METHODS: Adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated skeletal muscle miR-92b overexpression in C57BLKS/J mice, and global knockout of miR-92b mice were used to expl

AIMS: Exercise right heart catheterization (RHC) is considered the gold-standard test to diagnose heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). However, exercise RHC is an insufficiently standardized technique, and current haemodynamic thresholds to define HFpEF are not universally accepted. We sought to describe the exercise haemodynamics profile of HFpEF cohorts reported in literature, as compared with control subjects.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed a systematic literature review until December 2020. Studies reporting pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PAWP) at rest and peak exe

AIMS: In post-menopausal women, incidence of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction is higher than in men. Hormonal replacement therapies did not demonstrate benefits. We tested whether the non-steroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist finerenone limits the progression of heart failure in ovariectomized (OVX) mice with metabolic disorders.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Ovariectomy was performed in 4-month-old mice, treated or not at 7 months old for 1 month with finerenone (Fine) 1 mg/kg/day. Left ventricular (LV) cardiac and coronary endothelial functions were assessed by echocardiograp

Horses have a high prevalence of resting arrhythmias, cardiac murmurs, and valvular regurgitation, and training can increase the prevalence. This makes it challenging for equine veterinarians who are asked to evaluate horses for poor performance to determine the clinical relevance of some findings. In addition, cardiac disease has the potential to cause collapse or sudden death, putting both the horse and rider at risk. Further diagnostics, such as echocardiograms and resting and exercising ECGs can help to sort out the impact of an abnormality found on resting physical examination. However un

The goals of optimal medical therapy in patients with stable angina pectoris are to reduce the risk of cardiovascular mortality and future cardiovascular events, improve exercise capacity, and enhance quality of life. Whereas myocardial revascularization is frequently employed in the management of patients with stable angina, a variety of pharmacologic interventions are recommended as part of optimal medical management. The use of short- and rapidly-acting nitrates (eg, sublingual nitroglycerin spray and tablets) is at the core of the therapeutic armamentarium and should be integrated into opt

No large-scale randomized, placebo-controlled trials evaluate furosemide's effect on mortality and long-term morbidity in diastolic or systolic dysfunction. In short-term studies, furosemide reduces edema, reduces hospitalizations, and improves exercise capacity in the setting of systolic dysfunction (strength of recommendation [SOR]: B, based upon low-quality randomized controlled trials). Furosemide and other diuretics reduce symptomatic volume overload in diastolic and systolic dysfunction (SOR: C, based on expert opinion). There is potential morbidity with the use of high-dose loop diureti

Resistance exercise and protein supplementation are recognized as effective treatment strategies for age-related sarcopenia; however, there are limited data on their feasibility, tolerability, and safety. The primary outcome of this study was feasibility, evaluated through the 15-item TELOS (Technological, Economics, Legal, Operational, and Scheduling) feasibility components and by recruitment, retention, and consent rates. Tolerability was measured by examining permanent treatment discontinuation, treatment interruption, exercise dose modification, early termination, rescheduling of missed se
