Scheduled feeding improves sleep in a mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Sleep disturbances are common features of neurodegenerative disorders including Huntington's disease (HD). The sleep and circadian disruptions are recapitulated in animal models, and these models provide the opportunity to evaluate whether circadian interventions can be effective countermeasures for neurodegenerative disease. Time restricted feeding (TRF) interventions successfully improve activity rhythms, sleep behavior and motor performance in mouse models of HD. Seeking to determine if these benefits of scheduled feeding extend to physiological measures of sleep, electroencephalography (EE

Overfeeding during development induces temporally-dependent changes in areas controlling food intake in the brains of male Wistar rats.

AIMS: We sought to evaluate the effects of overfeeding during lactation on the feeding behavior and expression of specific regulatory genes in brain areas associated with food intake in 22- and 60-day old male rats. METHODS: We evaluated body weight, food intake of standard and palatable diet, and mRNA expression of dopamine receptor D1 (DDR1), dopamine receptor (DDR2), melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R), the μ-opioid receptor (MOR), neuropeptide Y (NPY), agouti-related protein (AGRP), proopiomelanocortin (POMC), cocaine-and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART), serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine;…

The effects of music therapy on vital signs, feeding, and sleep in premature infants.

OBJECTIVES: Recorded music risks overstimulation in NICUs. The live elements of music such as rhythm, breath, and parent-preferred lullabies may affect physiologic function (eg, heart and respiratory rates, O2 saturation levels, and activity levels) and developmental function (eg, sleep, feeding behavior, and weight gain) in premature infants. METHODS: A randomized clinical multisite trial of 272 premature infants aged ≥32 weeks with respiratory distress syndrome, clinical sepsis, and/or SGA (small for gestational age) served as their own controls in 11 NICUs. Infants received 3 interventions…

Reinforcer magnitude attenuates: apomorphine's effects on operant pecking.

When given to pigeons, the direct-acting dopamine agonist apomorphine elicits pecking. The response has been likened to foraging pecking because it bears remarkable similarity to foraging behavior, and it is enhanced by food deprivation. On the other hand, other data suggest the response is not related to foraging behavior and may even interfere with food ingestion. Although elicited pecking interferes with food capture, it may selectively alter procurement phases of feeding, which can be isolated in operant preparations. To explore the relation between operant and elicited pecking, we provide

Assessment of the relationship between body surface temperature and behavioral responses in rams using infrared thermography.

BACKGROUND: Animals under heat stress change their behavior to regulate their body temperature, as higher temperatures lead to a decrease in feed intake, thereby affecting production. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the temperature of different body parts measured by a thermal camera as a non-invasive indicator and the behavioral responses shown by the animal under different environmental conditions to predict these responses and understand the physiological and emotional state of rams. METHODS: The temperature-humidity index (THI) was used to define the environmen

Behavioral responses of pigs to dietary alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters: a systematic review.

Intensive swine production stressors induce stress responses that compromise welfare and health, positioning behavior as a critical welfare indicator. Although antibiotics traditionally improve performance, antimicrobial resistance concerns have driven the search for alternatives. This systematic review evaluated the influence of zootechnical additives, used as alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters (AGP), on pig behavior. Following the PICO framework (pigs, antimicrobial alternatives, AGP, behavioral responses), three databases (Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science) were searched. Out of 1,893

Mother-Child touch patterns in infant feeding disorders: relation to maternal, child, and environmental factors.

OBJECTIVE: To examine mother and child's touch patterns in infant feeding disorders within a transactional framework. METHOD: Infants (aged 9-34 months) referred to a community-based clinic were diagnosed with feeding disorders (n = 20) or other primary disorder (n = 27) and were case matched with nonreferred controls (n = 47). Mother-child play and feeding were observed and the home environment was assessed. Microcoding detected touch patterns, response to partner's touch, and proximity at play. Relational behaviors were coded during feeding. RESULTS: Compared with infants with other primar

Effect of BRAND's essence of chicken on the resetting process of circadian clocks in rats subjected to experimental jet lag.

BRAND's Essence of Chicken (BEC) has been widely used as a traditional remedy by people in Southeast Asia, which is proved to have an effect on the central nervous system (CNS) and autonomic nervous system (ANS). However, whether and how BEC consumption may affect mammalian circadian system is still largely unknown. In the present study, we investigated the effect of BEC feeding on the adaptation of circadian clocks to the experimental jet lag in rats. After the 12-h experimental jet lag through extending the light period, BEC feeding markedly facilitated the re-entrainment of all examined clo

Modulation of prey-capture behavior in the plethodontid salamander Ensatina eschscholtzii.

The hypothesis that salamander prey-capture behavior is highly stereotyped was tested in the plethodontid salamander Ensatina eschscholtzii using high-speed videography and kinematic analysis of feedings on two types of prey (waxworms and termites). The results show that E. eschscholtzii is capable of modulating the timing and magnitude of tongue and jaw movements in response to prey type. Feedings on waxworms, the larger prey, were characterized by shorter durations and higher velocities of tongue and jaw movements compared with feedings on termites, particularly in the latter portion of the

Preterm Infant Feeding: A Mechanistic Comparison between a Vacuum Triggered Novel Teat and Breastfeeding.

The goal for preterm infants is to achieve full oral feeds quickly and ultimately progress to full breastfeeding. Supplementary oral feeds are often given when the mother is not available to breastfeed. Bottles typically deliver milk in a different fashion compared to breastfeeding, which is thought to hamper transition to full breastfeeding. The aim of this study was to compare the sucking dynamics of preterm infants fed at the breast to feeding with an experimental novel teat (NT) designed to release milk only upon the application of vacuum. Simultaneous ultrasound imaging of the infant oral

Using natricine snakes to test how prey type and size affect predatory behaviors and performance.

INTRODUCTION: Predation is a complex process for which behavior, morphology, and size of both predator and prey can affect the success and effectiveness of the predator. For predators such as snakes that swallow prey whole, gape ultimately limits prey size, but the behaviors used to select, capture, and consume prey and attributes of the prey can also affect maximal prey size. For example, swallowing live, struggling prey is difficult, but using coiling or envenomation to restrain or kill prey has evolved repeatedly in snakes. METHODS: To test the potential benefits of these behaviors, we man

Effects of chronic plus acute prolonged stress on measures of coping style, anxiety, and evoked HPA-axis reactivity.

Exposure to psychological trauma is the precipitating factor for PTSD. In addition, a history of chronic or traumatic stress exposure is a predisposing risk factor. We have developed a Chronic plus Acute Prolonged Stress (CAPS) treatment for rats that models some of the characteristics of stressful events that can lead to PTSD in humans. We have previously shown that CAPS enhances acute fear responses and impairs extinction of conditioned fear. Further, CAPS reduced the expression of glucocorticoid receptors in the medial prefrontal cortex. In this study we examined the effects of CAPS exposur

Symposium review: The impact of management and facilities on cow culling rates.

This symposium review examines the association between comfort and cow longevity, with a particular emphasis on optimizing resting behavior … of lameness and facilitates recovery once cows become lame, which limits the effect of lameness on feeding behavior and reduces the risk for other health-related disorders, poor reproductive performance, and early herd removal. Cow comfort cannot be assessed by measuring the duration of lying time alone. Rather, comfort is reflected by the optimization of resting …

Associations between disordered eating behaviour and sexual behaviour amongst emerging adults attending a tertiary education institution in Coastal Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Sexual behavior (SB) is a well-documented pathway to HIV acquisition in emerging adults and remains common amongst African emerging adults. Previous research in high-income countries indicates a correlation between disordered eating behavior (DEB) and engaging in sexual behaviors. We aimed to describe the relationship between DEB and SB amongst emerging adults attending a tertiary educational institution at the Kenyan Coast. METHODS: We applied a cross-sectional design nested in a young adults' cohort study. Eligibility included sexually active emerging adults aged 18-24 years. Th
