Fibreoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) helps in visualisation of the endobronchial tree. Fibreoptic bronchoscopies were done in 429 cases between January 1999 and January 2000 [322 men (75.1%) and 107 women (24.9%)]. The aim of this study was to evaluate if Hyperventilation (HV) could avoid the Intracranial Pressure (ICP) peak that occurs during Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy (FB) in severely head injured patients. A Cerebral Perfusion Pressure (CPP) > 75 mmHg was maintained in 34 patients, with a subgroup randomized to receive controlled HV during FB. Measurements were done before the procedure, during maximum ICP values and 30 minutes after FB. The HV group had minor ICP values after FB, without differences in CPP and ICP peak values.

Previously, we demonstrated that patients with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) have a disinhibition of laryngeal responses to sensory input. In this study, sensorimotor responses to stimulation of the superior laryngeal nerve were compared between 10 subjects with abductor spasmodic dysphonia (ABSD) and 15 normal volunteers. The groups had similar latency and frequency characteristics of their unconditioned adductor responses (p>.05). The conditioned R1 (early) responses of the subjects with ABSD were greater and more variable in amplitude than those of the normal volunteers (p< or =.008).

PURPOSE: To establish a protocol for and to assess the value of helical CT in the imaging of the bronchial tree.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Noncontrast helical CT was performed in 30 patients undergoing fiberoptic bronchoscopy for different reasons. Different protocols were compared; they included overlapping 10 mm, 5 mm, or 3 mm slices and non-tilted, cephalad or caudad tilted images. In a prospective, randomized study, 47 patients underwent arthroscopic evaluation of the knee in an operating room setting with both a standard rod-lens arthroscope and a newer flexible optical catheter fiberoptic system. Two hundred and forty consecutive patients with recurrent lower gastrointestinal bleeding were studied by colonoscopic examination. These included 187 adults and 53 children. The procedure was successful either in identifying the lesion or in excluding it up to the cecum in 216 (90% patients). The source of bleeding was identified in 138 (74%) adults and 43 (81%) Children. Of 33 children admitted within 24 hours after accidental ingestion of a caustic substance, 14 (42.5%) had evidence of upper airway lesions on direct laryngoscopy.
