Speech analysis for acute decompensated heart failure: reporting a pilot study in Germany.

Acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) has been shown to affect breathing and speech production. We present a new German speech dataset and conduct a pilot study to show the feasibility of using speech to distinguish between decompensated and recompensated ADHF. We achieve accuracy rates of 77 % for this binary classification using read speech, with the use of segmented phrases scoring at 75% and sustained vowels trailing far behind at 52%. Our feature analysis shows a reduction in breathiness and an increase in articulation stability during recompensation. Overall, our results show the prom

Tracking Clostridioides difficile in Germany: Active prospective surveillance progress and molecular epidemiological trends.

BACKGROUND: Clostridioides difficile infections pose significant healthcare challenges in Germany, driven by various ribotypes (RTs) and antimicrobial resistance. This study updates the molecular epidemiology through Germany's active and passive surveillance until the end of 2023, including changes during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: As active surveillance, the first 10 stool samples tested positive for toxigenic C. difficile (one per patient) were collected biannually from 33 German microbiological laboratories. Passive surveillance included samples from severe cases and outbreaks. Isolat…

Sociodemographic differences in dementia prevention knowledge in Germany: Implications for targeted health communication.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a leading cause of disability and mortality worldwide. While the disorder is widely recognized, public awareness of modifiable risk and potentially protective factors remains limited. This is despite evidence that a substantial proportion of cases could be prevented or delayed by modifying personal risk factors. To date, the influence of sociodemographic factors on knowledge about dementia prevention has not been sufficiently examined, particularly in Germany, leaving a critical gap for targeted public health strategies. OBJECTIVES: To assess awareness of the preventab…

Real-world experience with foslevodopa/foscarbidopa in Germany: therapeutic insights and lessons learned.

Patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) often need to continue with device-aided therapies (DAT), such as intestinal and subcutaneous infusion therapies. Recently, continuous subcutaneous administration of foslevodopa/foscarbidopa (LDp/CDp) has emerged as a new therapeutic method. Two years after its approval in Germany, a large amount of real-world experience has been collected. Based on this, we present important practical recommendations to help clinicians optimise treatment. Key topics include identifying suitable patients, approaches to initiation and dose determination as well as…

Patterns of Spontaneous Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting in Germany From 2012 to 2021.

The absolute number of spontaneous adverse drug reaction (ADR) reports increased in the past in several national and international ADR databases. However, in most studies drug exposure was not considered. Our study aimed to evaluate the number of ADR reports from Germany in relation to the number of patients with outpatient drug prescriptions stratified by sex, age groups, seriousness, and reporter types (physician versus consumer). Therefore, 407 882 spontaneous ADR reports from Germany, after exclusion of ADR reports related to vaccines, intentional misuses and accidental exposure, submitted…

Physical activity and exercise in clinical practice guidelines in Germany: systematic document analysis.

INTRODUCTION: In numerous chronic conditions, the positive effects of physical activity and exercise on health and health-related quality of life are beyond discussion. Thereby, a clear distinction must be made between physical activity, exercise therapy, and training. Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) aim to provide evidence- and/or consensus-based decision-making frameworks within the context of healthcare. To date, however, it remains unclear how exercise, physical training, and movement-based health care services are addressed in German CPGs. METHODS: A systematic document analysis was
