Assessment of the praxis circuit in glioma surgery to reduce the incidence of postoperative and long-term apraxia: a new intraoperative test.

OBJECTIVEApraxia is a cognitive-motor deficit affecting the execution of skilled movements, termed praxis gestures, in the absence of primary sensory or motor disorders. In patients affected by stroke, apraxia is associated with lesions of the lateral parietofrontal stream, connecting the posterior parietal areas with the ventrolateral premotor area and subserving sensory-motor integration for the hand movements. In the neurosurgical literature to date, there are few reports regarding the incidence of apraxia after glioma surgery. A retrospective analysis of patients who harbored a glioma arou…

Graph theoretical analysis of functional network for comprehension of sign language.

Signed languages are natural human languages using the visual-motor modality. Previous neuroimaging studies based on univariate activation analysis show that a widely overlapped cortical network is recruited regardless whether the sign language is comprehended (for signers) or not (for non-signers). Here we move beyond previous studies by examining whether the functional connectivity profiles and the underlying organizational structure of the overlapped neural network may differ between signers and non-signers when watching sign language. Using graph theoretical analysis (GTA) and fMRI, we com

Impairment of Social Function in Young Females With Recent-Onset Anorexia Nervosa and Recovered Individuals.

PURPOSE: A subgroup of individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) displays social difficulties; however, it is not clear if individuals with comorbid autism spectrum disorders account for these difficulties. METHODS: We compared social function using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule in 43 young females with first-episode AN who did not have comorbid autism spectrum disorder, 28 individuals recovered from adolescent-onset AN, and 41 healthy comparison individuals (age range 14-22 years). We measured adaptive behavior with the Vineland-II parent questionnaire, and aspects of social cognit

Subaortic Area at Risk for Development of Obstruction After Surgical Repair of Atrioventricular Septal Defect: Myth or Reality?

BACKGROUND: Morphology of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) in atrioventricular septal defects (AVSDs) has been reported to be at risk for development of obstruction. The purpose of the present study was to identify the incidence, the risk factors, and the surgical outcomes of subaortic stenosis in repaired AVSDs. METHODS: Records of 427 consecutive patients who underwent anatomical repair for all types of AVSDs from January 2000 to December 2012 were reviewed. Outcomes, independent risk factors, reoperation, and death were analyzed. RESULTS: In a median follow-up of five years (rang

Effects of lurasidone on ketamine-induced joint visual attention dysfunction as a possible disease model of autism spectrum disorders in common marmosets.

Infants with autism have difficulties performing joint visual attention (JVA), defined as following another person's pointing gesture and gaze. Some non-human primates (NHPs) can also perform JVA. Most preclinical research on autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has used rodents as animal models of this social interaction disorder. However, models using rodents fail to capture the complexity of social interactions that are disrupted in ASD. Therefore, JVA impairment in NHPs might be a more useful model of ASD. The aim of this study was to develop an appropriate and convenient ASD model with common

An immersive virtual peer for studying social influences on child cyclists' road-crossing behavior.

The goal of our work is to develop a programmatically controlled peer to bicycle with a human subject for the purpose of studying how social interactions influence road-crossing behavior. The peer is controlled through a combination of reactive controllers that determine the gross motion of the virtual bicycle, action-based controllers that animate the virtual bicyclist and generate verbal behaviors, and a keyboard interface that allows an experimenter to initiate the virtual bicyclist's actions during the course of an experiment. The virtual bicyclist's repertoire of behaviors includes road f

Validating a dance-specific screening test for balance: preliminary results from multisite testing.

UNLABELLED: Few dance-specific screening tools adequately capture balance. The aim of this study was to administer and modify the Star Excursion Balance Test (oSEBT) to examine its utility as a balance screen for dancers. The oSEBT involves standing on one leg while lightly targeting with the opposite foot to the farthest distance along eight spokes of a star-shaped grid. This task simulates dance in the spatial pattern and movement quality of the gesturing limb. The oSEBT was validated for distance on athletes with history of ankle sprain. METHOD: Thirty-three dancers (age 20.1 +/- 1.4 yrs)

[Progressive focal cortical atrophies].

Progressive focal cortical atrophies are degenerative conditions characterised by the insidious onset and gradual exacerbation of an impairment in a single cognitive domain related to circumscribed cerebral atrophy. Several focal cortical syndromes with deficits in the realm of cognition are reviewed: progressive impairment of language (primary progressive aphasia), speech (progressive anarthria), semantic memory (semantic dementia), episodic memory (pure progressive amnesia), vision (progressive perceptual or visuo-spatial deficits) and gesture (progressive apraxia). These conditions are hist

Self/other organization in human psychological development.

Evidence from the evolution of human cultural behavior and learning, embryology and genetics of the brain, and the behavior of human infants indicates that the critical and uniquely human motives for cooperative imagination and joint interest in objects and tasks are determined by expression of genes and epigenetic neural systems elaboration long before birth, along with essential peripheral organs of perception and motor expression that will serve in communication by rhythmic facial, vocal, gestural, and body movement signals. These cerebral motives continue to exercise their influence on neu

An analysis of fifteen childhood asthma fatalities.

There is evidence from pediatric tertiary care centers in the United States that childhood deaths from asthma in hospitalized patients are becoming increasingly rare, while asthma mortality outside the hospital appears to be on the rise. When a young outpatient with asthma dies, the event is apt to be sudden and unanticipated and the victim is likely to be a preadolescent or adolescent who has suffered from asthma most of his or her life and who, despite ongoing bronchodilator therapy, requires hospitalizations for treatment of status asthmaticus. Patients in this age cohort have a strong tend

Overlap in neural representations of coordinated wrist and finger movements in human motor cortex.

Dexterous hand function underlies many essential human activities, from tool use to expression through gestures. Coordinated digit movements are enabled by the intricate musculature of the hand and forearm, which also imposes mechanical coupling between the digits and wrist, constraining their independent control. It remains unclear whether motor cortex inherits these constraints in its activity or encodes digit and wrist independently. To address this problem, we asked individuals with intracortical microelectrode arrays implanted in motor cortex to attempt flexion and extension of individual…
