Twenty-Four-Hour Intraocular Pressure in Chronic Primary Angle-Closure Disease.

PRÉCIS: Primary angle closure and primary angle closure glaucoma may exhibit normal intraocular pressure. Twenty-four-hour intraocular pressure fluctuation is highest in primary angle closure glaucoma. The degree of peripheral anterior synechiae was associated with a 24-hour intraocular pressure pattern in primary angle-closure disease without laser iridotomy. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to study 24-hour intraocular pressure (IOP) patterns in eyes with chronic primary angle-closure disease and evaluate associations between peripheral anterior synechiae (PAS) and 24-hour IOP pattern

Irrigating bent ab-interno needle goniectomy (i-BANG) technique.

BACKGROUND: The bent ab-interno needle goniectomy (BANG) represents a low-cost indigenous modification designed for ab-interno excisional goniectomy. This technique employs a reverse cystitome (24 G needle) and yields outcomes equivalent to those achieved with the Kahook Dual Blade goniectomy. However, reflux bleeding from Schlemm's canal, with or without anterior chamber shallowing, often impedes angle visualization, thereby limiting the desired treatment extent. Recommended preventive measures for managing or treating hyphema include avoiding treatment in high-risk patients (on anticoagulant

Monograph series on aging-related diseases: XI. Glaucoma.

In Canada, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in people aged 50 and over, with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) accounting for 90% of all cases. Prevalence of POAG increases with age, and the condition is found more commonly among blacks than whites. Elevated intraocular pressure is an important risk factor for the disease; however, its positive predictive value for the presence of disease is poor. Prevalence of primary angle-closure glaucoma also increases with age, occurs more frequently among the Inuit and Asians, and has been reported to be more common among women. There a

Polypharmacy-associated potential contraindications of drug prescriptions in patients with primary angle closure disease in a real-world setting.

BACKGROUND: Primary angle closure disease (PACD) is a type of glaucoma in which the intraocular pressure (IOP) is increased because of the blockage of the anterior chamber angle. Medications contraindicated for patients with PACD, such as anticholinergics, cause mydriasis, and can elevate IOP. However, anticholinergics are currently contraindicated only for primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) in Japanese package inserts. In this study, we investigated the prescription status of medications contraindicated for PACD, such as anticholinergics, in patients with PACD scheduled for eye surgeries.

Primary open-angle glaucoma.

Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy that is characterized by the progressive degeneration of the optic nerve, leading to visual impairment. Glaucoma is the main cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, but typically remains asymptomatic until very severe. Open-angle glaucoma comprises the majority of cases in the United States and western Europe, of which, primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most common type. By contrast, in China and other Asian countries, angle-closure glaucoma is highly prevalent. These two types of glaucoma are characterized based on the anatomic configuration of the a

Combined thermotrabeculocanalotomy cataract extraction.

The results of combined thermotrabeculocanalotomy-cataract extraction are reported on 9 cases, 7 of which are glaucoma cases controlled by medical therapy, one secondary glaucoma following chronic angle-closure, and one secondary glaucoma following trauma. The results were satisfactory both in terms of visual acuity and lessening reliance on medical therapy of the glaucoma following surgery. More importantly, the safety of the procedure is emphasized, which further indicates that the combined procedure should be considered as the procedure of choice when a cataract must be extracted in a patie
