Breath effects of three marketed dentifrices: a comparative study evaluating single and cumulative use.

This randomized and controlled, examiner blind, parallel group study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of three commercial dentifrices on breath malodor. A total of 384 healthy adult subjects with oral malodor were randomized to one of four brushing groups, using either an antimicrobial dentifrice containing 0.45% stannous fluoride, an antitartar dentifrice containing 0.243% sodium fluoride and 5% pyrophosphate, an antimicrobial dentifrice containing 0.24% sodium fluoride and 0.30% triclosan/copolymer, or bottled distilled water which served as the negative experimental control. Esophageal duplication cyst mimicking type I achalasia in an adult female: A rare case report with diagnostic challenges.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal duplication cysts (EDCs) are rare congenital anomalies typically diagnosed in infancy. Adult presentations are uncommon and may mimic other esophageal pathologies, including motility disorders such as achalasia, posing diagnostic challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 45-year-old Arab female with a seven-year history of progressive dysphagia, halitosis, and retrosternal burning. Radiological and manometric findings were initially suggestive of type I achalasia. However, intraoperative findings revealed an esophageal diverticulum containing purulent mater…

Inhibitory effect of betel quid on the volatility of methyl mercaptan.

Betel quid, a popular natural masticatory in Taiwan, is mainly composed of fresh areca fruit, Piper betle (leaf or inflorescence), and slaked lime paste. People say that halitosis disappears during betel quid chewing. In this study, the removal of mouth odor during betel quid chewing was discussed by using a model system which measured its inhibition on the volatility of methyl mercaptan. Results showed that crude extracts of betel quid (the mixture of areca fruit, Piper betle, and slaked lime paste) and extracts of the mixture of areca fruit and slaked lime paste exhibited marked effects on t…

Self-estimation of oral malodor.

Bad breath (halitosis, oral malodor) is a common condition, usually the result of microbial putrefaction within the oral cavity. Often, people suffering from bad breath remain unaware of it, whereas others remain convinced that they suffer from foul oral malodor, although there is no evidence for such. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine whether objective self-measurement of oral malodors is possible. Each of 52 volunteers was asked to sample the odor from his/her mouth, tongue, and saliva. Results were compared with (i) self-assessments prior to (preconception) and follo…
