Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis. A report of nineteen cases, with special reference to etiology and treatment.

The cases of nineteen patients with sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis were reviewed retrospectively. Of particular interest were the responses to antibiotics and prostaglandin inhibitors. The prostaglandin inhibitors relieved the pain within three to four weeks in sixteen of eighteen patients so treated. However, the inhibitors gradually became less effective in most patients. Oral antibiotics were more effective than the inhibitors in relieving the pain of eight of the eleven patients who were given antibiotics. Pustulosis palmaris and plantaris, commonly associated with sternocostoclavicula

Conceptual understanding of pustulosis palmaris et plantaris as an immune complex disease due to focal tonsillar infections.

The relationship between pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP) and immune complexes was studied in 17 patients who underwent tonsillectomy. By means of the Clq-binding test, immune complexes were detected in a considerable number of sera from these patients. Patients with a high serum level of immune complexes which decreased following tonsillectomy were found to benefit by a remarkable improvement in their skin lesions. There was a close association between the degree of improvement in skin lesions following tonsillectomy, and the changes in circulating immune complex levels after tonsillect

Prevalence of and factors influencing sensitization to corticosteroids in a Danish patch test population.

BACKGROUND: Corticosteroids are used to treat dermatoses, including allergic contact dermatitis, but can also cause contact allergy. The frequency of corticosteroid allergy varies between studies and is influenced by treatment traditions and availability. AIM: To estimate the prevalence of tixocortol-21-pivalate, budesonide and hydrocortisone-17-butyrate allergy in a Danish patch test population and characterize individuals with corticosteroid allergy. MATERIALS/METHODS: Three thousand five hundred and ninety-four patients were patch tested with tixocortol-21-pivalate, budesonide, and hydroc

Hand eczema-Part 2: Prevention, management, and treatment.

Prevention methods are important for patients with hand eczema (HE), especially those with risk factors. Frequent use of moisturizers is encouraged. Few drugs have been approved specifically for HE. Topical corticosteroids remain the mainstay treatment. Several new topical and systemic drugs are currently in development for HE. Dupilumab has recently been shown effective for chronic HE. Established criteria can be used to help determine causality for occupational HE, which is important for worker's compensation. The second article of this CME series discusses prevention, management, treatment,

Aetiology of occupational hand eczema in hairdressers: Tackling the complexity of exposure combinations to identify patterns associated with increased risk of hand eczema.

INTRODUCTION: Hairdressers are exposed to wet work and manifold allergens at work, rendering exposure complex and the aetiology of occupational hand eczema (OHE) often multifactorial in this occupational group. OBJECTIVES: To identify exposure patterns associated with increased risk of hand eczema in hairdressers. METHODS: All hairdressers graduating from 2004 to 2007 and 2015 to 2018 received a questionnaire in 2009 and 2020, respectively. Current exposures (with or without regular glove use) and OHE were self-reported, and their association examined. Patterns of exposure were identified by

Occupational hand eczema reduces career length in hairdressers: a prospective cohort study of Danish hairdressers graduating from 1985 to 2007.

BACKGROUND: Occupational hand eczema (OHE) is common in hairdressers, and many leave the trade because of the disease. However, the exact impact of OHE on career length is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of OHE on career length and risk factors associated with leaving the trade because of OHE in hairdressers followed-up for up to 35 years. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of Danish hairdressers graduating between 1985 and 2007 (n=5219) was performed. A questionnaire was sent in 2009 and 2020. The Danish Labor Marked Supplementary Pension Scheme provided information on affiliation

Atypical paronychia: don't forget herpesvirus.

Paronychia is usually caused by bacterial infections. Herpetic whitlow is an acute infection of the fingers or toes caused by herpes simplex viruses and it typically presents with vesicles. We report the case of a 78-year-old woman with gingivostomatitis and atypical paronychia in several fingers without blisters.

Long-term follow-up of hand eczema in hairdressers: a prospective cohort study of Danish hairdressers graduating from 1985 to 2007.

BACKGROUND: Occupational hand eczema is common among hairdressers and implementing effective preventive measures requires a good understanding of the disease's epidemiology. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the long-term development of hand eczema (HE) in hairdressers. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of all hairdressers graduating from Danish hairdressing vocational schools from 1985 to 2007 was conducted. A self-administered questionnaire was sent in 2009 with follow-up in 2020. Data from the Danish labour market supplementary pension scheme provided information on yearly affiliation with the

Knuckle pads: an ancient disease frequently misdiagnosed because of minimal modern attention.

Knuckle pads are benign painless papules and nodules that most commonly appear on the extensor surfaces of the proximal interphalangeal joints. Knuckle pads are frequently misdiagnosed due to their location overlying joints, which can lead to costly interventions and patient discomfort for a relatively harmless condition. We describe a 44-year-old woman who presented with mildly painful nodules on multiple bilateral proximal interphalangeal joints. The patient did not have a family history of fibromatosis and the rheumatoid factor was negative. Histology showed mild epidermal hyperkeratosis, p

Allergic contact dermatitis related to homemade slime: a case and review of the literature.

Slime has become extremely popular as a children's toy in recent years and is typically made with various household substances. Although reports of slime causing skin irritation are not uncommon, case reports of slime-induced allergic contact dermatitis have only recently surfaced. We present a case of a child with hand dermatitis, history of exposure to slime, and positive allergen patch testing to two ingredients found in slime. The case underscores the need for clinicians to be aware of slime as a possible cause of allergic contact dermatitis in children. Given the trend of newly-reported c

Neutrophilic dermatosis of the dorsal hands: A review of 123 cases.

Neutrophilic dermatosis of the dorsal hands (NDDH) is an uncommon localized variant of Sweet syndrome first described in 1995. It is characterized by tender erythematous plaques, pustules, and bullae on the dorsa of the hands. A total of 123 cases of NDDH are included in this review. The mean patient age was 62.1 years, and there was a slight female preponderance. Overall, 78.0% of cases had bilateral involvement, and other sites were affected in almost a third of cases. Underlying disease was found in ∼40% of patients, with the most common associations being hematologic disorders (gammopathie
