Challenges and best practices in essential medicines supply and use in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the critical need for effective healthcare in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Ethiopia, a significant gap exists between the demand for and the actual provision and management of essential medicines. This challenge is rooted in systemic failures across the medicine supply chain and utilization practices, directly compromising the health and well-being of a highly vulnerable population. This study, therefore, explored the challenges and best practices related to essential medicines supply and use in IDP camps in Ethiopia. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative stud

Characteristics of a Multistate Outbreak of Lung Injury Associated with E-cigarette Use, or Vaping - United States, 2019.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), also called vapes, e-hookas, vape pens, tank systems, mods, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), are electronic devices that produce an aerosol by heating a liquid typically containing nicotine, flavorings, and other additives; users inhale this aerosol into their lungs (1). E-cigarettes also can be used to deliver tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the principal psychoactive component of cannabis (1). Use of e-cigarettes is commonly called vaping. Lung injury associated with e-cigarette use, or vaping, has recently been reported in most states (2-4).

Shifting priorities in vector biology to improve control of vector-borne disease.

Vector control remains the primary measure available to prevent pathogen transmission for the most devastating vector-borne diseases (VBDs): malaria, dengue, trypanosomiasis, filariasis, leishmaniasis, and Chagas disease. Current control strategies, however, are proving insufficient and the remarkable advances in the molecular biology of disease vectors over the last two decades have yet to result in tangible tools that effectively reduce VBD incidence. Here we argue that vector biologists must fundamentally shift their approach to VBD research. We propose an agenda highlighting the most criti

Potential quantitative effect of a laboratory-based approach to Lyme disease surveillance in high-incidence states.

Historically, public health surveillance for Lyme disease has required clinical follow-up on positive laboratory reports for the purpose of case classification. In areas with sustained high incidence of the disease, this resource-intensive activity yields a limited benefit to public health practice. A range of burden-reducing strategies have been implemented in many states, creating inconsistencies that limit the ability to decipher trends. Laboratory-based surveillance, or surveillance based solely on positive laboratory reports without follow-up for clinical information on positive laborator

Viral Hepatitis Strategic Information to Achieve Elimination by 2030: Key Elements for HIV Program Managers.

Evidence documenting the global burden of disease from viral hepatitis was essential for the World Health Assembly to endorse the first Global Health Sector Strategy (GHSS) on viral hepatitis in May 2016. The GHSS on viral hepatitis proposes to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030. The GHSS on viral hepatitis is in line with targets for HIV infection and tuberculosis as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. As coordination between hepatitis and HIV programs aims to optimize the use of resources, guidance is also needed to align the strategic information components o

Strengthening infectious disease surveillance in a Dutch-German crossborder area using a real-time information exchange system.

International outbreaks are occurring much faster than before and require rapid trans-national detection and response. Never before has there been a more urgent need for improved crossborder collaboration on harmonisation of surveillance and response systems despite varying legislations. In the Euregion Maas Rhine, the Public Health Services of South Limburg in the Netherlands and Aachen in Germany agreed to join forces to work on a collaborative tool for sharing real-time infectious disease data. Both units had already implemented an adapted version of HPZone (a web-based software suite for m

Comparative evaluation of three surveillance systems for infectious equine diseases in France and implications for future synergies.

It is necessary to assess surveillance systems for infectious animal diseases to ensure they meet their objectives and provide high-quality health information. Each system is generally dedicated to one disease and often comprises various components. In many animal industries, several surveillance systems are implemented separately even if they are based on similar components. This lack of synergy may prevent optimal surveillance. The purpose of this study was to assess several surveillance systems within the same industry using the semi-quantitative OASIS method and to compare the results of t

Uncertain science and certain deadlines: CDC responses to the media during the anthrax attacks of 2001.

This paper presents a study in which communication personnel for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided first-hand accounts of the experience of responding to media inquiries during the 2001 anthrax attacks. In-depth interviews were conducted with 19 communication professionals who worked either at the CDC headquarters in Atlanta or at field locations in the U.S. where persons were exposed to anthrax. The interviews sought CDC staff viewpoints on how the CDC handled a historically unprecedented level of press activity in terms of work locations and equipment, inform

From emergence to recoverability: a sociotechnical control trajectory theory of HIT-related risk.

Health information technology (HIT) is deeply embedded in contemporary clinical practice, yet incident-based research continues to show that digital systems can introduce new and sometimes widespread risks to patient safety. While prior studies have been effective in classifying types of HIT-related problems, they offer limited explanation of how such risks emerge, remain unnoticed, spread across sociotechnical systems, and ultimately lead to harm-or are successfully contained. This article advances the Sociotechnical Control Trajectory Theory, a theory-forward framework that conceptualises HI

Understanding and measuring workplace violence in healthcare: a Canadian systematic framework to address a global healthcare phenomenon.

BACKGROUND: Globally, healthcare institutions have seen a marked rise in workplace violence (WPV), especially since the Covid-19 pandemic began, affecting primarily acute care and emergency departments (EDs). At the University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto, Canada, WPV incidents in EDs jumped 169% from 0.43 to 1.15 events per 1000 visits (p < 0.0001). In response, UHN launched a comprehensive, systems-based quality improvement (QI) project to ameliorate WPV. This study details the development of the project's design and key takeaways, with a focus on presenting trauma-informed strategies for

Individual-level HPV vaccination verification in Botswana: lessons learned from implementation of the HOPE II trial.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated 660,000 new cervical cancer cases and 350,000 deaths globally in 2022, with over 90% occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Global elimination targets call for vaccination of >90% of girls against human papillomavirus (HPV) by age 15 by 2030. While Botswana's national policy aligns with these targets, progress monitoring is constrained by fragmented, predominantly paper-based health information systems. We describe our experience verifying individual-level HPV vaccination status among adolescent girls and young women living with HIV…
